Hyundai Accent

What is it? The redesigned Accent will be available as both a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback, but the big news on the car centers on mileage and price.

The Accent is the fourth Hyundai that is certified at 40 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg in the city, which are both class leading according to the EPA. The 40 mpg number is an 18 percent improvement over the 34 mpg highway of the previous Accent.

Power comes from a new 138-hp, 1.6-liter four cylinder that is the first subcompact car to use direct-injection fuel delivery. This engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The new Accent is longer and wider than the car it replaces. The interior volume and passenger space have increased so much so that the EPA now classifies the car as a compact sedan.

Standard safety gear includes electronic stability control, six airbags, and active front head restraints.

The Accent will be available in three trim levels: GLS four-door, GS five-door, and SE five-door.

What’s new or notable? Hyundai claims that drivers who use the Active Eco setting can see up to a seven percent improvement in fuel economy.

CR’s take: In our tests of the previous-generation Accent, we got 28 mpg overall and 37 mpg highway with the automatic and 30 mpg overall and 36 mpg highway with the manual. This new car is far nicer inside than the old model.
