What is it? Honda unveiled the new 9th-generation Honda Civic at the New York auto show, just as the small cars are rolling out to dealerships around the country. The popular small sedan will be available in five trims: the HF high-fuel economy model with EPA fuel economy of 41 mpg highway; the conventional Civic with an EPA-estimate of 39 mpg highway; the hybrid at 44 mpg, natural gas model to be offered in more markets; and the sporty Si trim with a new 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine.

The new Civic is about the same size as the vehicle it replaces, but with a slightly shorter wheelbase. It is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 140-hp. Inside, there are some new controls, plus available Bluetooth and navigation with voice control and traffic overlay.

What’s new or notable? The Civic will finally receive standard stability control, and front, side, and side-curtain airbags. Plus, the Civic's hood and front fenders are designed to deform in a front collision with a pedestrian.

CR’s take: The outgoing Civic was very competitive in the small car class with a roomy interior, responsive handling, and quick steering. We were only able to recommend the previous Si and Hybrid model since they were the only ones with standard stability control.
