2012 Kia K2, K5 hybrid to bow at Shanghai auto show

Kia K2 sub-compact sedan and Kia K5 hybrid to make official premieres at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show!

Kia plans to showcase two new four-door sedans to Chinese consumers during the upcoming auto show in Shanghai. The 2011 Shanghai auto show, which kicks off tomorrow, will bring together all major international and domestic carmakers as well as hundreds of car parts suppliers from all around the world.

Each of the carmakers presented at the show, including Kia Motors and Hyundai Motor company, will try to win the hearts and minds of consumers in the fastest growing auto market in the world by showcasing their new concept cars, production models and latest environmental friendly technology.



Kia, for example, is all set to take the wraps off its latest new models, the all-new Rio sedan and Kia K5 hybrid car. The 2012 Rio sedan is a sibling model of the 2012 Kia Rio 5-door hatchback, which was first show at Geneva Auto Show. It boasts fresh new styling, fully redesigned interior and more modern powertrain technology.

Named Kia K2 (Chinese market only), the new sub-compact four-door sedan shares its powertrain technology with Hyundai Verna (China-market Hyundai Accent), meaning the model offers a choice of 1,4L and 1,6L gasoline engines mated to four-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmissions. The upcoming Kia K2 will be built locally at Kia’s manufacturing plant in China with production slated to commence in July this year.



Speaking of new Kia’s Fiesta rival, the K2 sedan will feature different engine and transmission options as the US-market Kia Rio. Expect to find more information about the US-spec Kia Rio 2012 next week when the carmaker puts it on display at the 2011 New York Auto Show!

Also making its Chinese premiere will be the all-new Kia K5 hybrid sedan. The K5 hybrid sedan is basicaly the same car as Kia Optima hybrid sedan sharing the hybrid powertrain technology with its US-market sibling. According to latest rumors, Kia also plans to unveil its brand-new Picanto mini-car, which has recently been introduced to the European automotive media in Spain. Boasting the carmaker’s new alpha numeric designation, the Picanto will be named the Kia K1 in China. Stay tuned for more Kia news from Shanghai!
