Automakers are constantly unveiling new concept cars to showcase their brand image and demonstrate where the company is going. But after the concept debuts, and maybe makes the rounds of some local shows, that's pretty much the last we see of it. But what if an automaker could design a concept that it not only showcases at an auto show, but could also let today's video-game generation drive and toy with themselves?
That's the idea behind the Vision Gran Turismo series. Automakers design their concept car, show it off to the public, and then it becomes available to play in
Gran Turismo 6, one of the most advanced and popular driving games out there.
Mercedes has done it, so has
BMW.
Mitsubishi has shown off its idea, as has
Nissan.
Volkswagen revealed its design - the
GTI Roadstrer Vision Gran Turismo - at the Wörthersee gathering in Austria, and now its design is ready for the virtual reality of GT6.
The VW GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo, we'll remind you, shares little with the GTI hot hatch it's supposed to evoke. It's an open-top roadster with butterfly doors, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with over 500 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. In other words, it's more like an original Golf R32, on steroids, with no roof and a supercar complex.
Gamers will be able to purchase the VW roadster from the Vision GT section in the GT6 garage, or for a limited time, win it by completing a lap in the new Seasonal Event. To mark its debut, we've got a fresh batch of images and a video clip
