2012 Volkswagen Passat Priced From $20,765

Volkswagen has announced that the 2012 Passat will go on sale with a $20,765 starting price, which includes the destination fee. The Passat is expect to reach the showroom floors this September.


Our version of the Jetta’s bigger brother will be exclusive to the United States. Its $20,765 starting price is $3,500 more than $17,265 base price of the Jetta, but is a staggering $7,180 less than the $27,945 base price of the previous 2010 Passat (though it should be noted that the 2.0T engine and direct-shift gearbox (DSG) transmission were standard for that model year). VW hopes that the low price point will boost the Passat’s competitiveness against the usual midsize sedan champs such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the Nissan Altima. The respective base prices of those cars are $20,995, $21,930 and $21,030. The automaker states that building the Passat in the United States—at its all-new plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee—is a key contributor to keeping costs down, while keeping content up. Standard features include automatic dual-climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel audio controls and no-charge three-year/36,000 mile maintenance.


Three engines will be available at the Passat’s launch. The base 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine rated at 170 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque; a 2.0L TDI diesel engine with 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque; and the range-topping 3.6L VR6 engine with 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 2.5 will come standard with a five-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic (non sequential). The turbodiesel will be offered with a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed sequential automatic, while the VR6 engine will only come with the sequential automatic.

The S model comes standard with the features mentioned previously. The SE adds features like V-Tex leatherette seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power driver seat and touchscreen radio. A sunroof and a sunroof/RNS-315 navigation combination are also available. The SEL adds sport seats, Homelink, RNS 510 navigation, the new Fender Premium audio system and interior chrome accents, while the SEL Premium keyless access and remote start, driver seat memory and fog lights. All together, the Passat will be available in 15 configurations:
