Report: Honda Civic sales ending in Japan

According to a report from Japan's Nikkei.com, Honda will stop selling the Civic sedan in its home market as soon as existing inventories run out. As customers shift their focus towards MPVs and more compact vehicles, the popularity of the Civic has dwindled substantially in Japan - only 452 of the trusty Honda sedans were sold in the automaker's domestic market during the month of October.

Honda is still committed to offering the Civic sedan in other markets, such as the United States and Europe, where sales numbers are substantially more robust. In fact, new versions of both the U.S.- and Euro-spec Civics are set to bow sometime next year. Honda will continue to manufacturer Civic sedas at its Suzuka plant for export purposes. It's unclear whether Honda will continue to import the European-built Civic Type R Euro hatchback into Japan. Thanks for the tip, Jim!

Ferrari California for Japan

If you live in Japan and have the means, there are any number of enticing automobiles you can get domestically that aren't available elsewhere. Most of them are from Japanese automakers, though. But last week, we reported on the BMW Z4 Silver Top edition, and now Ferrari has joined the race with an exclusive offering of its own.

This Ferrari California Limited Edition is being offered exclusively by Cornes & Co, Ferrari's main importer in Japan for the past 30 years. Their latest limited edition starts with Maranello's first front-engined V8 convertible and upgrades it with special touches like carbon fiber rocker panels, door handles and fuel cap, and unique diamond-polished forged rims with red hubs and titanium nuts.

Only ten examples will be offered in three pre-determined color schemes: four in white over black, three in red over black and three in black over cream. This exclusivity will cost you though: ï?¥26,500,000, to be precise - equivalent to about $320,000 U.S., or about ï?¥3 million ($36k) over the standard model.

Ford reducing Mazda stake to just 3.5%

Ford Mazda stake

Ford
has announced that it will reduce its stake in Mazda from 11 percent to 3.5 percent by November 19. The move is part of the Blue Oval's plan to slim its belt line and become a more flexible company in the future. Of course, drumming up the kind of cash comes from selling off 7.5 percent of Mazda likely isn't hurting anyone's feelings in Dearborn, either. The stock will be sold to a number of other Mazda business partners through the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Even so, Ford will remain the biggest Mazda shareholder at 3.5 percent.

Ford has had a long history of partnership with the Japanese automaker. The two joined forces in 1979 when FoMoCo snapped up a seven-percent stake in Mazda, and by 1997, Ford had a controlling interest in the company with a 33.9-percent stake. But when the 2008 automotive implosion hit, Ford quickly sold a sizable 20-percent share to drum up cash, leaving the American automaker with a still sizable 13.9-percent slice of Mazda. When Mazda recently issued more shares of its company, that stake withered even further to the 11 percent we see today.

Even so, Ford says that the two companies will continue to share information and technology moving forward. Hit the jump for press releases from both Mazda and Ford.

Parking Space House
A house built in the area of a parking space - Click above to watch video after the jump

As Americans, our concept of a normal-sized home has grown by leaps and bounds over the decades. In her book Living Large, author Sarah Wexler says that the average home size in the U.S. grew from 983 square feet in 1950 to 2,349 square feet in 2004, and it doesn't look to be shrinking any time soon. It's not like that everywhere. Just look at what ingenious architects in Japan are up to. With both space and funds at a minimum, builders and property owners alike are looking to get the most out of every square foot, even going so far as to build a two-person home on the same footprint as an average-sized parking space.

To make it happen, designers have employed a number of space-saving tricks, including a triangular spiral staircase that decreases the minimum radius needed for going up and appliances that are stashed under counters and in unique cubbies. Doesn't sound like a bad way to go, if you ask us. Hit the jump to see a video of the house for yourself.

Report: Mitsubishi plug-in hybrid coming in 2013

Mitsubish PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid
Mitsubish PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Autoweek reports that Mitsubishi will wade into plug-in electric waters in 2013. The automaker's head of electric vehicles, Yoshikazu Nakamura, said the vehicle will be an SUV similar to the 2009 Px-MiEV Concept and that the production version is already nearing the final stages of development. The concept got its pep from a tiny 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine working in coordination with two electric motors and a battery pack. Mitsubishi pegged the Px-MiEV as being able to travel for up to 30 miles one pure electric go-go, so there must be some pretty hefty battery technology onboard as well.

Whether or not the production SUV will use a similar drivetrain remains to be seen. We can say with some certainty that Mitsubishi is likely to simplify the vehicle's name considerably. The automarker has already scrapped the i-MiEV moniker for the somewhat more palatable name of "i powered by MiEV" in the States. We can't wait to explain that one to the fine people of the DMV.
