VW Beetle Dune Concept is a high-ridin' dirty Bug

Filed under: Concept Cars, Detroit Auto Show, Coupe, Budget, Volkswagen, Design/Style, Off-Road

Those with long memories will recall that this isn't the first time VW has put its reborn retrocar on stilts.

We like the new (but not New) Volkswagen Beetle quite a lot. But while the stylish Bug is plenty of fun on paved roads, it lacks a certain set of skills possessed by some of its ancestors, namely the ability to put a smile on a driver's face on sand, dirt or other bits of rough terrain.

Enter the VW Beetle Dune Concept, a car we showed you preview sketches of last week. The Dune Concept is, as Volkswagen says in its press release below, a "Baja Bug for the 21st century." Using the Beetle R-Line and its 210-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and six-speed dual-clutch transmission as its base, the Dune sports an extra two inches of ground clearance, while also being wider, 0.8 inches taller and half-an-inch longer than the production model.

Finished in a yellowish-orange metallic shade called Arizona, the Dune's body wears a set of wheel arch extensions that contribute an additional 2.2 inches of width. It rides on 19-inch, five-spoke wheels that fit nicely into the widened arches thanks to a track that's been stretched 1.1 inches both front and back. A new raised hood and unique front fascia provide a more aggressive take on the Beetle's iconic face, while an aluminum skidplate adds a degree of ruggedness. Out back, a clever ski and snowboard rack is integrated into the rear spoiler. The spoiler slides away, accommodating the gear, and then snaps back into place, securing them against the trunk lid.
