BMW is likely to debut the production version of its 6-Series coupe later this week at the Paris Motor Show, but it won't take the wraps off of its redesigned - and repowered - M6 for almost half a year.
Until then, we have an exclusive illustration based on insider information. The F12 - in BMW-speak - M6 will bow alongside the redesigned 3-Series at next spring's Geneva Motor Show utilizing the same V8 powertrain as the upcoming M5 sedan. Aside from sharing a basic powertrain, that's about where the similarities between the M5 and M6 stop.
The M6 will take the M5's approximately 580-600 horsepower and push it up to nearly 600 ponies. Both cars will use a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 based on the unit that currently powers the automaker's X6. Of course, M Division will do its best to strengthen and lighten the BMW V8.
Unlike the outgoing M6, which was more of a grand touring car than an outright performance machine, the next-generation M6 is expected to be a more hard-edged high-performance machine, harking back in many ways to the first generation M6 from the 1980s. The new car will be lighter and more powerful than the M5 thanks to extensive weight-saving techniques throughout.
Our rendering shows that BMW will base much of the M6's design language on the svelte Grand Coupe Concept vehicle and the upcoming 1-Series M. It takes those two designs and pushes their style to the limit with wider and lower haunches, an aggressive front intake and additional vent
