افتراضي 2011 Chrysler 300 First Impressions

Not many cars have been on the road for more than fifty years. As time passes, the economy changes, people’s desires change and manufacturers keep trying new and improved ideas.

The Chrysler 300 first hit the road in 1955 and was sold until 1979. During that time, owners could choose from various designs. After almost a 20-year absence, Chrysler brought the 300 back with no V8, no 2-door model and no convertible.

Fast forward even more, and the 300 has seen some powerful updates. Snoop Dogg was a proud owner in 2004, giving the car an image that Chrysler had not intended. 2005 saw the coming of the 300C with the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 and 340 hp. A few mild styling updates come out in 2008 and in 2009, they added variable timing to the HEMI V8, increasing horsepower to 350.

This new-for-2011 model is more handsome to look at than the outgoing design, and I think it will appeal to a wider range of potential customers. It sports a beautiful new, seven-blade front grille and signature ‘key slot’ headlights. The liquid chrome finish on the blades looks absolutely gorgeous.

The distinctive profile of this Chrysler 300 has basically the same proportions as the last design, but more refined. The front fenders are striking. The integrated rear decklid spoiler has also given the new 300 an impressive rear presence. I almost think I like the look of this from the back end better than from the front.

The LED taillamps and signature ‘light pipes’ are seamlessly connected with a chrome appliqué. Also adding to the impressive rear end design are two fascia-mounted, oval-shaped exhaust tips.

With feedback from over 4,000 people, Chrysler found that the number one reason they would not buy the previous 300 was because of lack of visibility. Chrysler listened. The windshield has been raised three inches to improve both aerodynamics and outward visibility and more glass has been added to side windows to increase the field of view by 15%.

The all-new interior looks like it just returned from finishing school. The door panels have a three-dimensional, dual-gloss graining that gives a very velvety appearance and feel. Splashes of chrome throughout add accents in all the right places. A new instrument cluster features two large, easy-to-read gauges with a beautiful sapphire blue illumination. The LED ambient interior lighting is also in the same hue.

I spent equal time sitting in both the driver and passenger seat, and was very impressed with both. The all-new seats have S-shaped spring suspension, four-way lumbar support and variable density foam in the lower and back of the seats as well as the bolsters. I spent over four hours in one day in this car and was incredibly comfortable.

Other upgrades on this new 300 include available heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats as well as real wood appliqués on the steering wheel, doors, instrument and centre console.

To me, a luxury automobile must have a quiet interior and a refined ride, and this new 300 has both. Chrysler has done a great job of improving both areas with this makeover. Two premium-composite, underbody panels provide more than eight feet in length of sound insulation. Body cavity silencing foam as well as dual-pane acoustic windshield and side glass all work in harmony to provide an impressively quiet cabin.

The front and rear suspension have both been redesigned. Using premium suspension hardware has made the ride very smooth. It feels more confident in corners and offers a more controlled ride than the previous model.

Both the 300 and the 300 Limited feature the newest powertrain from Chrysler, the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. This new engine his much-improved over the previous generation, while horsepower is up to 292, an increase of 42, and fuel economy has improved by about 8%. The 300C comes with the impressive 5.7-litre HEMI, now up to 363 hp.

The 300C AWD adds 19-inch cast aluminum wheels, and active transfer case and a front-axle disconnect system to improve fuel economy. This system automatically disconnects the front axle when AWD is not needed. Chrysler is the first major automotive manufacturer to offer this technology.

The revamped 300 has standard electronic stability control with Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support (perfect for Vancouver!), as well as active head restraints, full-length side-curtain airbags, blind-spot monitoring (BSM), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), ParkSense front and rear park assist system and more. This sedan has more than 70 advanced safety and security features.

Uconnect is available on all trim levels of the new 300. This state-of-the-art infotainment centre has a large 8.4-inch touchscreen for easy viewing and usability. Navigation is not standard, but available as a standalone option for an extra $450.

Even the pricing of this new car got a makeover. The base 300 Touring has an MSRP of just under $33,000 with $3,600 of added value over the 2010 model, while the top-of-the-line 300C RWD will start at just under $40,000 and contains about $9,500 of added value.

Compare these prices to the Honda Accord, the Ford Taurus and the Nissan Altima, and the 300 Limited is worth taking for a test drive.

Chrysler has really upped their game on this all-new 300 sedan, keeping everything that was good and improving greatly on everything that wasn’t.
