افتراضي 2011 Volvo S60 First Impressions

Thoughts of a premium, turbocharged, all-wheel drive sport sedan with 300-ish horsepower don't typically call the Volvo badge to the minds of enthusiasts—though the automaker may be well on their way to changing that. Intended to be the most dynamic and passionate Volvo ever, the Swedish brand's latest S60 is bound to start making Infiniti G37 and BMW 335i shoppers do a double take.

The best S60 ever
For Canadian consumption, the 2011 S60 launches with a 300-horsepower, straight-six turbo engine, all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic slushbox as standard. Of course, a slew of high-end safety gizmos are also on board.

Safety First, Second and Third
Aside from the requisite list of 'smarten up and pay attention' beepers, the new S60 has been given a new 'pedestrian detection' system with fully autonomous auto-braking capabilities. If you're, say, sidetracked by texting , S60 can fully apply its brakes to stop you from hitting that distracted cell-phone social-media enthusiast who's tweeted his way right into traffic.

Other scenarios are possible—but the latest in Volvo safety aims to keep pedestrians out of Volvo S60 grilles, and vice versa.

Elegance under the radar
Safety gadgets are far from the only compelling reason to check out this machine. On the styling front, S60's elegant and understated look is plastered with numerous details that reveal themselves upon closer inspection. This is a rewarding car to look at closely, though it's relatively modest at first glance.

That's a big plus to some.

A stand-out cabin
Ironically, S60's interior is a bit more extroverted. Dark plastics contrast against orange leather, and a plethora of interesting textures and materials reward the fingertips throughout.

The initial impression of the S60's cabin is spot-on. Entry and exit is a cinch, thanks in no small part to buttery leather seats that feel Teflon-coated smooth. Comfort, feel and ergonomics-wise, these are probably the best perches in the industry.

The steering wheel is thick and sporty, the 'waterfall' console is twisted towards the driver for a cockpit feel, and there's enough room for four adults to travel comfortably. In typical Volvo fashion, all controls, buttons and switchgear feel substantial and robust.

Balance with a capital 'B'
Drive the S60, a beautiful sense of dynamic balance proudly shows itself before long.

Handling is locked down, the steering weight and ratio feel expertly metered against the car's size and mass, and there's plenty of entertaining and inspiring grip to play with.

Thing is, there's also plenty of comfort, too.

Despite S60's eagerness to please in fast corners, it rides with a firm, heavy smoothness that exudes confidence and encourages relaxation. It loses little if anything between corner-carving and cruising in comfort.

The new Volvo turbo-six
There's more balance under the hood. The three-litre engine glides things along in peaceful quiet from low revs when drivers are gentle, though pushed, it strains necks and presses torsos into seatbacks on command. Further, the mill only becomes notably audible towards redline, and never intrusively so.

Turbo lag is basically nil, and the engine sings with a clean, smooth wail that never sounds overworked or burdened. Like the ride and handling, the S60's engine is entertaining and potent, but also relaxing and refined.

Track trip
All that buttery-smooth performance makes it easy to accidentally speed, excessively. This was confirmed to your writer by an Oregon County sheriff during the vehicle's international media launch near Portland. After a stern and lucky warning, the trip's remaining high-velocity stuff would be reserved solely for some laps around the new Portland Raceway Park facility.

This young doozy of a track packs 2.3 miles of intimidating surprises—including blind corners on hills, off-camber high-speed turns and even a half-pipe section that's landscaped like an Olympic snowboarding course. An intimidating track, but a good place to put the S60 through a bit of everything.

Pushed on the circuit, the same balance the S60 exploited on the road was apparent. No part of the car overwhelmed any other—the brakes, engine, handling and grip all felt appropriate, measured, and well-suited to one another. As such, the car proved entertaining and safe during exploration of its limits. As it was on the road, the S60 felt 'just right' with things sped up.

Extra points are awarded for the AWD system, which shuffles power around smoothly to add confidence to corner-exit situations.

No manual transmission??!
There are a few complaints, though.

It amounts to sport-sedan blasphemy, but there's no manual transmission available because Volvo says only 4 percent of shoppers would opt for one if it were. A similar percentage of S60 drivers will use the transmission's manual mode more than once—as it's slow to react, slow to shift, and hasn't been taught to throttle-blip.

And don't expect a manual and AWD S60, or a tweaked-up “R” variant, either.

Impressively executed
All-wheel drive stick-shift nuts may lean towards Subaru or BMW products on either side of the S60's price point, but to the majority of shoppers, this will prove an impressive machine that feels the way a luxury sport-sedan should: natural and confident, not nervous and overstimulated.

Pricing should prove similar. The 2011 S60 starts at $45,450, and units are arriving on dealer lots now.
