BMW offering chauffered tours of Munich in classic cabrios

With Oktoberfest half a year away, they've launched a new vintage racing division and opened up their restoration garage to private owners. Now they're offering tours around Munich, chauffeured in some very rare classic Bimmers from the company's private collection. The tours begin and end at the BMW Museum, and visit BMW Tower, BMW Welt, and the 3 Series assembly plant as well as various historic sites around the city. The roster of cars used for the tours includes 326 and 335 Cabriolets from the 1930s, the 50s-era 502 "Baroque Angel" Cabriolet, and a one-of-a-kind 3200 CS Cabriolet. The tour will cost a not-insubstantial 90 euros per person (about $120 USD), but if you're planning a trip to Germany between now and October, it looks well worth checking out. Report: BMW could hault U.S. production due to ash cloud

A new report from BusinessWeek suggests that even the auto industry could be affected by the hazardous ash if airlines continue to stay grounded. BMW spokesman Mathias Schmidt has told BW that the German automaker may need to shut down its Spartanburg, South Carolina, which produces the X5 and X6 crossovers if planes remain on the ground more than two additional days. So, how does the April 14 eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano control the fate of manufacturing in South Carolina? BMW ships transmissions and other components from Germany to its sole U.S. plant via air. If BMW can't get parts to Spartanburg soon, the plant will be temporarily shut down. A bit of good news has come in the past 24 hours, though, as scientists say the volcano currently isn't shooting any ash into the atmosphere, though seismic activity in the area of the eruption is still said to be very high. BMW teams up with Embraer to trim out corporate jets

The two companies have hopped into bed together in order to learn a thing or two from each other, and as a result, you'll soon be able to step aboard an Embraer Phenom 100 or Phenom 300 with Bavarian-inspired cockpits and cabins. BMW took a hard look at how the typical aircraft interior is constructed and then brought the typical German engineering eye to the equation. This isn't an airborne 3 Series, though. While both the Phenom 100 and Phenom 300 boast unparalleled cockpit spaces thanks to BMW's touches, the company says the exercise had more to do with the translation of ideals rather than transcribing auto design to the air. Clever storage, unique color choice and high-quality materials found their way into the final product. Embraer says that it will allow customers to choose one of seven different color schemes. So far, around 100 jets have been produced, with another 600 orders waiting to be filled. Autoblog has already shown you under the hood, running in the snow, and even on the assembly line. Beyond this early exposure to the 2011 model that is set to go on sale in May with a starting price around $47,000, the reality is that there's not much that visually differentiates the 2011 model from the 2010. The revised styling of the "new" X5 is so subtle that from the profile view, the two are nearly indistinguishable. The real changes for 2011 come under the hood, where the X5 now gets BMW's most current gasoline-fired engines and the company's eight-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the 2011 X5 (we have a hard time referencing it as new) will now be offered with technologies already available on many other BMW models.
