A report in
Motor Trend says that CAFE requirements are driving
Volkswagen to develop the next-generation Polo - as well as a crossover to slot below the
Tiguan - for the US market. If so, the two new models would join a few other VW products with elevated mile-per-gallon numbers, including the
Golf GTD and a potential hybrid two-fer in the
Touareg and Jetta PHEVs. However, Volkswagen
won't give the CAFE-busting XL1 a resident's visa for the States.
The next-generation MkVI Polo has been the subject of speculation for more than a year now, with
a piece in Autobild mentioning technologies like a three-cylinder TDI among its more powerful engines, driver aids from the MkVII
Golf and
Audi A3 and weight savings over the current car. To be built on the MQB platform, an oft-repeated rumor is that it will maintain the same length as the current car but have a wheelbase five centimeters longer, providing more interior legroom. The next Polo could arrive sometime late next year as a 2015 model.
There will be plenty hoping that the subcompact crossover will be a
production version of the Taigun, but almost nothing is known about it outside of VW right now. MT says it won't arrive until at least 2016 and be thrown into a segment that will have even more players by that time.
