BMW X1 to be built in Leipzig
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Crossovers/CUVs, BMW  BMW announced today that it would begin building its entry-level CUV at the automaker's Leipzig plant, alongside the 1- and 3-series. The news confirms rumors that the X1, which has yet to be revealed publicly, will indeed be built on the 3-series platform, lending some amount of sporting cred to the mini 'ute. BMW hasn't announced what exact markets the X1 is destined for, but the decision to produce in Liepzig is part of BMW's efforts to shift production into the regions in which its vehicles are primarily sold. As such, the next X3 will join the X5 and X6 at BMW's Spartanburg plant, instead of the Magna center where it's currently produced. Expect the BMW X1 to be revealed later this year or early in 2009. BMW to add further features, complications, to iDrive
Filed under: Gadgets, Tech, BMW  These days, technology and customization go hand-in-hand. Laptop computers and MP3 players now come in a rainbow of colors and your computer's operating system can be made to suit your unique preferences. BMW has big plans in store for its oft-criticized iDrive system which would make it and the vehicle in which it's installed extremely customizable as well. Simple choices such as color schemes and screensavers for the iDrive's graphical user interface pale in comparison to the ability to adjust transmission shift points and engine boost levels in an effort to either increase fuel economy or improve overall performance. Multiple users will be able to make their own adjustments and save their settings and the car will know the driver based on which key fob is in close proximity. Project Track Slut, Part Two: Suspension
 Click above for a high-res gallery detailing the install With over 140,00 miles on the clock, the stock suspension of our BMW 318is project car was far from ready for its upcoming track assault, and the stiffer sidewalls and stickier rubber we fitted in our first installment accentuated the tired springs and shocks. Thankfully, the popularity of the E36 chassis makes shopping for new suspension bits an easy, if slightly overwhelming, affair. The choices range from pieced together spring/shock combos to race-ready coilovers, so we decided to split the difference with one of H&R's Touring Cup Kits (31005T-1). The package includes springs and shocks that lower the front by 1.5-inches and the rear by one inch, balancing ride comfort and stiffness while allowing us to traverse speed bumps without having to worry about teetering on our oil pan. CAR claims BMW M1 destined for production

The July issue of CAR magazine features an exclusive interview with BMW board member Herbert Diess in which the exec reveals that the M1 Hommage concept is destined for production. Diess says, "We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car," but CAR doesn't divulge too many secrets online (they are, after all, in the business of selling dead trees). The Brit pub gives up a few teasers about the mid-engine supercar, namely that it won't be called the M1, BMW's plan to fit "heron-wing" doors and a powertrain line-up that will include three engine choices. On that last bit, we'd suspect that the twin-turbo'd 3.0-liter engine would be a suitable entry-level mill, followed by the M3's V8 and the M5/M6's V10, with the latter benefiting from a duo of turbochargers. It's all speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait for the July issue to hit UK newsstands tomorrow, with sales in the U.S. beginning later this week.[Source: CAR]

BMW to raise prices by 1% to counter weak dollar
Filed under: Car Buying, Euro, BMW, Earnings/Financials  Most would argue that BMWs already flirt with being overpriced, though Munich would argue with you. The dollar's drop has hurt BMW's ability to earn a margin on each vehicle it sells in the United States, so prices will be bumped by one-percent beginning in June. BMW has taken a 17-percent whack in income for the first three months of 2008 as sales have slowed, the dollar weakened, low resale values, and bad debts have cost the luxury automaker. Though it's facing a slight slowdown due to those factors, a one-percent price increase is relatively modest, and shouldn't cause much consternation when it comes time to sign on the dotted line, though it makes the 135 that much more rareified. As long as it keeps vehicles like the M3 coming, we'll gladly let you pay more for your X6 -- we weren't getting one, anyway. [Source: Bloomberg]
