Honda confirms end of four-door Civic Type R production

Honda Civic Type R (JDM) - Click above for high-res image gallery

After only three years of production (in its current form), the Japanese market Honda Civic Type R will take its final bow at the end of August. Here in America, we've always lusted after Honda's Type R products (though we've always been very pleased with our own market's Civic Si), but we can't help but feel saddened by the loss of a true performance icon.

What's to love, you ask? For starters, the Civic Type R is fitted with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, able to produce around 225 horsepower at a screaming 8,000 rpm, and when you consider that the whole package weighs less than 2,800 pounds, it's makes for a relatively quick Civic. Couple that mill to one of the best six-speed manual gearboxes on the planet and you've got a recipe for success. What's more, Civic Type Rs are fitted with 18-inch wheels on Bridgestone Potenza performance tires and four-piston Brembo brakes - the equipment you need for a serious track day pocket rocket.

There's no word if another Civic Type R is in the works, especially with Honda's larger focus on hybrid cars taking up most of the research and development money. Still, we are indeed mourning the loss of this mean machine and are hugging our Civic Sis here in the U.S. for comfort. Hit the jump for Honda's official press release.

Report: Volcano stops JDM Nissan plant, could hurt U.S. Cube, Murano, Rogue supplies

The wrath of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano continues. Airlines are just now beginning to get brave enough to test the skies after airborne ash put a stop to all flights last week, and today there are new reports of volcanic activity putting everyone on notice. And while the volcano has left plenty of travelers stranded across Europe, the eruption is having a widespread impact on the manufacturing sector, too. Case in point: The Wall Street Journal reports that Nissan is suspending production at its plants in Fukuoka and Kanagawa. The reason? The Japanese plants use pneumatic sensors produced in Ireland that are delivered by aircraft, and that whole 'just-in-time' production methodology apparently doesn't jibe all that well with Icelandic ash.

If you've been anxiously waiting delivery of your new Nissan Cube, Murano or Rogue, odds are you're probably okay - for now. But all three models use the sensor in question, and as such, are facing production delays. The company doesn't know when the plants will be able to resume production, but odds are it will depend on when Iceland's volcano stops wreaking havoc on Europe's airspace.

Honda fixin' to release new limited-edition Civic Type-R three-door in Japan

Honda Civic Type R Euro Mugen - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Honda Civic Type R Euro has been a solid hit in Japan. The UK-built hatchback packs 201 horsepower, love-it-or-leave-it styling and a suspension that has been honed on the lunging tarmac of Europe. No, it may not be as fast as its predecessors, but that hasn't stopped Japanese buyers from snapping them up in troves. Honda says that since the car went on sale in November, the company has sold 1,850 units on its home turf.

To celebrate, Honda is turning out a special edition version of the Civic Type R Euro three-door. Don't expect anything too radical, though. The car is basically a styling update and not much else. The bodywork gets a slight redesign for the 2010 model year. If Honda's planning anything spectacular, the company is keeping its secrets to itself.

For those of you still holding onto the hope that we may finally see a hatchback version of the Civic here in the States once again, keep dreaming. Hit the jump for the press release.

Honda in the black, fourth quarter profits up by 28%

Honda has officially joined the ranks of automakers like Kia and Ford by posting solid profits during the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal year. The Japanese automaker managed to see profits rise by 28 percent compared to the same period last year, thanks largely to increased hybrid sales. The announcement marks the fourth-straight quarter of profits for the company after seeing a rare operating loss at the end of March, 2009.

Sales in Japan have been bolstered by sales of the incredibly popular CR-Z Hybrid. Earlier this month, Honda announced that it had received over 7,000 orders for the two-door hatchback, which accounted for over half of the models the company had set aside for sale in its home market.

Honda also attributed its quick recovery to the fact that its lineup is comprised mostly of fuel-efficient vehicles - something buyers in a global recession have been quick to appreciate. Analysts also point to a healthy dose of cost-cutting measures as bearing credit for the rebound, too. Based on the good news, the carmaker hopes to see its growth continue through the rest of 2010.

ASI invades Porsche Cayenne territory with Lexus LX570 Invader

Think the Porsche Cayenne has the market cornered on ridiculously fast, large sport-utes? ASI is here to tell you to think again with the new Invader. Based on the Lexus LX570, the ASI Invader packs a host of (largely unspecified) performance and visual upgrades to take the soccer-mom-mobile into serious hot-rodding territory.

Upgrading the lux-ute's 5.7-liter V8, ASI has boosted power up from 380 horsepower in stock form to around 600. The result is a 0-60 sprint in less than five seconds. And lest ye forget, the four second range is insanely quick for just about anything this side of a supercar, much less a big SUV like the LX 570.

To go along with the performance modifications - which we also gather include suspension and (hopefully) brake upgrades - ASI has also imbued its Invader with a series of appearance and aerodynamic "enhancements" to give it the visual attitude to go with the power boost. Successful? Ahem, well, you're certainly not going to miss it, are you?
