Water-injection systems for Ford Mustangs

Water-systems have been popular in the diesel world for ages, but the technology was first developed for piston-engined aircraft during the Second World War to boost performance without huge engine modifications.










Most people are a bit hesitant to dump chemicals into their Mustang's engines, which probably explains why all of our supercharger kits are far more popular than our nitrous systems. ''Nitrous'' is kind of a scary word for the average driver -- and even for most performance enthusiasts -- that carries with it stories of cracked pistons, thrown rods, and other issues that's enough to turn most Mustang pilots away from chemical injection methods. Yet, that itch for even more horsepower and torque often leaves little choice. The best-kept secrets in the chemical injection market are water-methanol injection kits from both Snow Performance and Nitrous Express. Water-methanol injection allows your 2005 to 2013 Mustang to see massive performance gains in a small, fairly inexpensive package that can boost horsepower by as much as 20% in forced-induction applications.
Water-methanol systems have been popular in the diesel world for ages, but the technology was first developed for piston-engined aircraft during the Second World War to boost performance without huge engine modifications. Despite its inherent advantages, water-methanol technology was only used in limited quantities on production vehicles from Chrysler and Saab. While the auto industry largely ignored water-methanol injection, the performance aftermarket has wholeheartedly embraced it, especially in the diesel world where compression-based engines benefit the most from these systems. Gasoline engines don't get nearly as much performance out of water-methanol injection as their diesel cousins, but can can still see impressive gains in both horsepower and torque, especially when equipped with turbos or superchargers.


Water-methanol systems work by injecting a 50/50 water and methanol mixture into your engine's incoming air. While it seems most companies like to advertise the ''methanol'' portion of their kits, the water does most of the work by absorbing massive amounts of heat and creating cooler, denser charge air. The methanol acts as an anti-freezing agent to keep the system functioning even in cold weather. The denser air acts as an octane enhancer, bringing standard pump gas up to 116 octane and allowing your engine to generate loads more horsepower and torque. The water and methanol particles simply burn with the rest of the air and fuel, leaving no engine build-up or other contamination. Mustangs fitted with turbochargers and superchargers benefit even more, because the denser air charge allows the forced-induction system to run at higher boost pressures for nearly 5 psi over their stock formats. When combined with even more aggressive tuning, the average forced-induction application can see 20% gains in horsepower, while naturally-aspirated Mustangs can gain up to 10% extra horsepower. Tuning isn't necessarily required for naturally-aspirated applications or basic forced-induction setups, but it is highly recommend for heavily-modified engines and for anyone who wants to get full power out of their water-methanol kits. Contact Stage 3 Motorsports for custom tuning options.

The kits themselves are fairly simple and relatively inexpensive when it comes to the good old power to dollar ratio. Snow Performance's Stage 3 Boost Cooler kit is a prime example. Snow's kit comes with a pump, LED controller, nozzles, lines, a wiring harness, and all other necessary installation hardware. The pump can be installed in the washer fluid tank or under Snow's own reservoir, which can be placed in the engine compartment or trunk. The nozzles are installed into the inlet tubing before or after the throttle body in naturally-aspirated Mustangs or any Pony equipped with a Roots-style or twin-screw positive-displacement supercharger. S197s equipped with centrifugal superchargers or turbos must install the nozzles after their charging system to avoid damaging their very sensitive blades. The LED controller is installed on your Mustang's dash and allows you to monitor and make adjustments to the Boost Cooler's flow rates and overall engine performance. The kit performs at its best when using a perfect 50/50 water-methanol mixture or Snow's own 51/49 Boost Juice mixture , but can function when using nearly any blue windshield washer fluid rated for -20 degrees Fahrenheit that features at least 30% methanol with no additives. You can even mix your own, as long as it only contains 50% methanol and 50% distilled water. In general, your water-methanol fluid will only need to be refilled every time you get a tank of gas, depending on your driving habits and the system's settings.

By far the most appealing aspect of Snow Performance's kit is the price. For just a hair under $630, you get a massive horsepower increase. For example, the 2011 to 2012 ROUSH TVS2300 supercharger increases the 5.0L Coyote's engine total power output up to 540 flywheel horsepower. Snow's Stage 3 Boost Cooler can increase that power by up to 20%, creating up to an additional 108 flywheel horsepower. A naturally-aspirated 2012 Mustang is rated at 412 horsepower from the factory and a 10% gain adds up to 40 horsepower without the need for tuning, putting it on par with some of our cold air intake and tuner combo kits and expensive exhaust kits:search=exhaust kit] that struggle to make that kind of raw power.

Water-methanol injection is one of the safest and easiest ways to see huge power gains without completely emptying your bank account. Both turboed and supercharged Mustangs see the most benefits, but even bone-stock applications can gain the edge. Unlike a nitrous kit whose bottles are expensive to fill and easily push your engine to its absolute limits, water-methanol systems are cheap to refill and offer one of the safest ways to increase your Mustang's power output. Customers with older 2005 to 2009 Mustangs using the 3V 4.6L Modular engine may want to consider building up their motors with forged internals or even a full short block if your Mustang is already approaching 525 flywheel horsepower.
