Hyundai’s foray into the luxury market with the Genesis sedan has gone quite well. While it hasn’t been a blockbuster, sales have been reaching nice levels – clearly people are willing to pay good money for a vehicle badged Hyundai. The cause will only be helped further as the higher-end Equus gains in public perception
For 2012, Hyundai has upped the ante further with the Genesis. Continual improvement is a must and the company recognizes that. The Genesis gets a new front fascia, headlights and taillights and as well as tweaked interior and package options
The real news though for enthusiasts is the Genesis R Spec model. It is powered by an all-new, direct-injected 5.0-liter V-8 making 429 horsepower and 376 pound feet of torque. The car has a more aggressive appearance than the standard car, along with sports suspension tuning
The rest of the engine lineup gets changes that offer more power as well as better mpg numbers. The 4.8-liter V-8 that has formed the top-level model for the Genesis remains at 385 horsepower, and now returns 26 mpg on the highway, up one from last year’s 25
The base model 3.8-liter V-6 adds 43 hp and 27 pound feet of torque, now producing 333 hp and 291 lb-feet thanks to direct-injection technology. It gets 29 mpg on the highway. New eight-speed automatic transmissions are now offered across the engine lineup
Hyundai has just released updated pricing for the 2012 models. The base model Genesis 3.8 V-6 starts at $34,200, and upgrading to the V-8 will set you back $44,500. The new Genesis 5.0 R-Spec comes in at $46,500
