It's been several years in the making, but BMW's plan to expand their inroads further into the "lifestyle" market appears ready to finally bear fruit. Looking something like a ground-bound X6 that's missed a few collagen injections, the 5 Series Gran Turismo concept will likely be one of the last Bimmers that Chris Bangle has had a significant hand in designing (for better or worse).

In any case, these first shots of the 5 Series GT have slipped out in advance of the car's planned Geneva Motor Show unveiling, and it looks like it was caught at some sort of an unveiling for what looks to be a select group of invited media (notice the camera and video rigs in plain sight).

We'll leave the judgments up to you and the gimmicky segmentation jargon to BMW ("Progressive Activity Sedan"... really?), but this double-jointed slant-back definitely looks production-ready, with its evolutionary front end (grille borrowed from the 2010 7-Series, headlamps from the Concept CS, rump from the X6, etc.), We would expect the interior textures and colors to be toned down a bit for production, and perhaps the wheels will get an inch smaller or so, but other than that, we expect this on dealer forecourts without necessitating any major changes. BMW is back at it again with the 5 Series Gran Turismo concept, inventing categories that don't yet exist with a vehicle that isn't quite a sedan, wagon, crossover or SUV. Instead, the Bavarian automaker refers to its new vehicle as a Progressive Activity Sedan, which apparently means that it's a fastback wagon that sits a bit higher off the ground than normal sedans. If you love the shape of the X6 but don't need the ground clearance, you'll probably find little to complain about from the 5 Series GT.

While we're not quite sure we're on board with the new bodystyle, one feature we do admire is the two-piece, double-jointed tailgate. It's a clever take on the classic problem of how to access the rear hatch in tight quarters. Once open, that space can hold a cavernous 58 cubic feet of stuff with the rear seats folded down. Regardless of the total amount of room, we've got to wonder if that oddly shaped opening will severely limit what can fit in the boot.

For such a large vehicle, there's not that much room inside for passengers. Just four occupants will find a spot for their keisters, though it does appear that each of them will be coddled with plenty of room (all four seats slide fore and aft) and electronic gadgetry. The center console extends from the dash all the way to the rear seating area, providing a spot to put elbows and doodads in their respective places. Our guess is that production won't be too far in the future and with only mild changes to this concept's basic design. Check back next month for live shots of the Tourer from the Geneva Motor Show. For those who have been wondering when and where lightning-rod designer Chris Bangle will surface again, Automotive News has some scuttlebutt for you. According to the industry publication, the controversial BMW stylist has some plans of his own - for a new design studio.

While Bangle has not yet gone on record as saying anything, BMW's development head, Klaus Draeger has reportedly spilled the flame-surfaced beans, saying: "He's going to make his own dream come true. He's going to open his own design studio."

It isn't yet clear whether Bangle's next project will have an automotive focus or take his talents to other disciplines, but early reports (and a likely non-compete clause in his Bavarian contract) would probably indicate that he will move on to other things. If Bangle does make room for automotive consulting at some point, his design influence could well spread beyond BMW.

BMW is fishing for buyers in February and March, and its bait is to cover the first couple months of new-car payments. Right now, BMW is offering to pay the first two payments on selected models from its line, including versions of the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and X5 models. This incentive is available on both remaining 2008 and current 2009 vehicles and can be combined with low APR financing deals of 0.9% for up to 60 months on the '09s. The maximum payout is not to exceed $750 a month and the vehicle must be handled through BMW Financial Services.

If you want to take advantage of this offer, you'd better act now. Peter Miles, Executive Vice President of BMW's North American Operations says that the German automaker does not plan to extend the program past March 31st for 2009 models and March 2nd for '08s.

Last week, we told you that four of BMW's Art Cars were starting their North American tour in L.A., and that if you were in the area you should go check them out. Well, we took our own advice and spent a sunny SoCal Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art admiring the cars. On display are some of the most famous examples (most of the sixteen-car collection remains at BMW's museum in Munich) including Andy Warhol's 1971 BMW M1 Group 4 racer, Frank Stella's 1976 BMW 3.0 CSL, Roy Lichtenstein's 1977 BMW 320i Group 5 racer, and Robert Rauschenberg's 1986 BMW 635csi. The cars will be at the museum in Los Angeles until February 24. From there, they head to New York from March 24 to April 6 and then on to Mexico after that. For those of you who you can't see the cars in person, we've included plenty of high-res photos in the gallery below.
