Chicago LIVE: VW quietly updates Routan with new Chrysler V6, interior

Built under contract by Chrysler in Canada, the 2011 Routan gains a new interior, a new V6 engine and a number of chassis upgrades shared with the Chrysler-badged vans.
Under its hood is a new 3.6-liter V6. Chrysler calls the engine its Pentastar motor; it puts out 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque while offering reasonable 17/25 mpg fuel economy. A six-speed automatic with a manual shift gate is also new for the vans.
A Volkswagen-tuned suspension features rack-and-pinion steering, new bushings and revised shocks. SE and SEL models feature heavy duty rear shocks and coil springs, while SEL Premium models are equipped with a self-leveling air suspension. Coil sprung models can tow 2,000 lbs., while air suspension models are rated at 3,500 lbs.
Front-wheel-drive is the only configuration available.
Exterior changes are limited to lightly revised fascias and new stowing roof rack cross rails shared with Chrysler models.
Inside, the Routan also shares Chrysler’s hefty design upgrades, including substantially higher-quality materials and a more convenient flowing dashboard design. Leatherette and leather seating surfaces are available, depending on the trim level. SEL and SEL Premium models come with a power moonroof.
VW says the upgraded Routan goes on sale soon, starting from under $27,000 for the SE.
