Report: Slow early sales have BMW thinking 5GT should've launched with six-cylinder
Filed under: Crossover, Hatchback, BMW 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo - Click above for high-res image gallery It appears that BMW may have overestimated the U.S. market appeal for high-end versions of the 550i Gran Turismo, and executives now acknowledge that the six-cylinder 535i probably should have been available at launch. It's not unusual for an automaker to launch an all-new model by shipping mostly loaded, top-level versions in order to absorb the maximum number of dollars from early adopters, but sometimes that approach backfires if the market isn't ready for the new vehicle. Case in point is the 5GT, of which BMW has apparently sold fewer than 1,200 units in the U.S. since the launch of the polarizing people mover late last year. Interestingly, BMW has found that more women than expected have bought the model, while its less-than-stellar fuel consumption has hurt sales in a still-weak U.S. economy. Gran Turismo sales are apparently ahead of projections elsewhere, but those other markets launched with both gasoline and diesel inline-six engine choices. Given that the 5GT is best suited as a road trip machine, it might make sense for BMW to install the 3.0-liter diesel from the X5 and 335d as an alternative to the twin-turbo V8. So far BMW has not indicated any plans to offer a diesel GT in America, but the less costly 535i GT is still slated to arrive in the Fall. Photos by Drew Phillips / Copyright (C)2010 Weblogs, Inc. Bimmerfest 2010: The Rose Bowl hosts North America's largest BMW gathering
Filed under: Performance, BMW, Specialty, Design/Style, Racing Bimmerfest is billed as the celebration of being a BMW enthusiast - but to most it is simply the world's largest BMW event held in North America. After starting as a small get-together at a BMW dealership in Santa Barbara just over a decade ago, the show has outgrown all of its venues... until now. The 2010 show, its 11th annual event, was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena this weekend. Thanks to strong online forum support for Bimmerfest, this year's show was packed with thousands of BMW models covering decades of production and dozens of vendors peddling accessories. If you have a Roundel on your hood, it's worth the trip (some drove from as far as Alaska and Florida just to attend). The best part of Bimmerfest - and the reason we enjoy the show so much - is that nearly every single BMW at the show is privately owned. Sure, BMW North America brought some cars to display (among them an X6 M and a 7 Series Alpina B7), but the diversity and customization of the owned cars meant no two were alike. We weaved our way through hundreds of freshly detailed 3 Series and 5 Series models to find dozens of real gems. Our favorites included the race-bred E30 M3 models, a sweet BMW Z8, and a rare BMW 850CSi six-speed manual. Check out our gallery to find some of your favorites. Spy Shots: BMW 3 Series Touring closer to hauling into showrooms
Filed under: Spy Photos, Wagon, BMW BMW 3 Series Touring spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery The 3 Series is perhaps the most important vehicle in BMW's lineup, and though the automaker has given it a few minor tweaks for the 2011 model year (fascia nip/tuck, new N55 single-turbo mill), an all-new version is in the works for 2012. We've seen photos of the next-generation sedan all covered in BMW's signature swirly paper, but our spies have just caught the We're sure that the new 3 Series Touring will fare well in European markets, but it's unclear how the wagon will be received here in the States, especially since BMW is rumored to be working on a 3 Series Gran Turismo - similar to the 5 Series GT that launched earlier this year. However, the 5GT's slow initial sales numbers may cause BMW to rethink its product planning, and the new 3 wagon will be perfectly poised to do battle with the likes of the Audi A4 Avant and Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, as well as the new TSX Sport Wagon from Acura which will be arriving in early 2011. No word yet on when we'll see the production version of the next-generation 3 Series, though we certainly won't rule out a possible debut at this year's Paris Motor Show. For now, click through the gallery below to see the 3 Series Touring showing off its new rump. Spy Shots: Next-gen BMW 6 Series caught topless without shame
Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, BMW Next generation BMW 6 Series convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery BMW has had a remarkably steady flow of new product hitting the market in the last couple of years, and now that the latest 5 Series is starting to hit the streets and the X3 is coming this fall, one of the next models in line for a rework is the 6 Series. The new coupe and convertible will be the last of the "Bangle Butt" models to go under the knife, and none too soon. The redesigned convertibles have been running everywhere from Arvidsjaur, Sweden to the Nurburgring since last winter, but always with the top up. The latest batch of images from our intrepid spy shooters show a test driver enjoying a bit Munich sunshine in the spring. When the new 6 debuts publicly either later this year or early next we're expecting it to feature much of the same design language we've seen on the latest 5, 7 and Z4, with tight side sculpting, stretched headlamps and an overall look that is both cleaner and more muscular than before. Droolworthy: BMW releases M3 GTS specifications
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Europe, BMW, Racing BMW M3 GTS - Click above for high-res image gallery Oh yes, kids and kiddies. BMW has just dropped the juicy details on the spanking new M3 GTS. Here's the skinny: under the hood is a 4.4-liter V8 with 450 horsepower and 324 pound-deet of twist. All that muscle kicks at the rear tires via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and helps the car get to 60 mph in under 4.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 189 mph. BMW's army of Bavarian engineers managed to slim the car's weight down to around 3,373 pounds, which should make the already wicked M3 even more devilish on track. Speaking of tossing the M3 GTS around on track, BMW has fitted the car with a bolted-in roll bar as well as factory mounting points for an additional cage. While the standard three-point belts are par for the course, the race-bred German comes with six-point belts for both front occupants as well. Stopping duties fall on hefty six-piston calipers squeezing on 14.9-inch rotors up front and four-piston blocks out back. If you want it - and lets face it, we all want it - get ready to shell out a lofty $170,000.
