افتراضي 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid Review

The Aspen is Chrysler's first foray into the world of sport utility vehicles. That's right: the storied company had never offered an SUV before, leaving that job to its sportier Dodge division.

The 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid offers the same driving dynamics as the regular model.

While the Aspen burst onto the scene fairly late, it now represents a quality alternative, especially in hybrid variant. Largely derived from the more plebian Dodge Durango, this Chrysler still managed to develop its own unique personality.

The 2009 Aspen boasts the same silhouette as the Durango but, like any true Chrysler vehicle, it also sports countless chrome accents. The goal is to stand out from the macho-looking Dodge by offering a classy, refined SUV.

Well, designers have hit the bull's eye. Every element that makes a great Chrysler is on the menu. Chrome is applied to the massive grille contour and thin horizontal slats, while the headlights integrate a subtle, downward-facing bulge. Completing the package is a set of 18-inch wheels and chrome mirrors.

Unfortunately, the rear section is a bit too plain. The taillights, in particular, could have used more distinctiveness; after all, the Aspen is a vehicle for people looking to make a statement.

The interior is nicely appointed, although refinement fails to impress. I found it too reminiscent of the Durango's cabin. Memo to Chrysler: it takes more than just faux wood inlays to create a luxury feel. While the company calls it "Madrona Burl woodgrain finish", the dashboard does look plasticky. Moreover, plastics used inside do not meet expectations for a so-called premium SUV. Virtually illegible, the analog clock at the top of the center stack is just another example of an ill-executed design.

The instrument cluster is just as difficult to read. The soft blue backlighting might be helpful during the day, but it's a different story at night. On a positive note, occupants will have an easy time climbing on board this big rig thanks to some pretty convenient running boards.

The interior is nicely appointed, although refinement fails to impress.

The feeling behind the wheel is a pleasant one. The size of the Aspen makes the driver feel safe, while the good driving position ensures comfort over long trips. The smooth suspension also allows predictable handling. Livability is excellent with an incredible amount of cargo room, especially when the rear seats are folded. Sure, the cargo floor is high, but that's to be expected from a vehicle like this.

Into the 21st century
The secret of Chrysler's Two-Mode Hybrid powertrain lies in the dual drive system. The first mode is fully electric and is used only when the big 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is not required. When idling and gently taking off (up to about 40 km/h), the Aspen Hybrid makes do with the 87 horsepower generated by the two electric motors, thereby burning zero fuel. You can reportedly save up to 54 percent fuel in city driving, although a longer road test is necessary to confirm the automaker's claim.

You still need to be careful with your right foot; otherwise, fuel consumption will skyrocket.

Transitions between the two modes are quite subtle. In fact, the only way to know which mode is being used is by looking at the indicator on the dashboard.

The second mode involves the 345-horsepower HEMI (total output is rated at 385 horsepower). This gasoline engine steps in during accelerations, passing maneuvers, towing duties and every other situation where the power demand is greater. Incidentally, it also features a Multi-Displacement System (MDS) which shuts down half the cylinders when full power is not required, further saving fuel and boosting efficiency. Having said that, you still need to be careful with your right foot; otherwise, fuel consumption will skyrocket.

Fortunately, the 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid offers the same driving dynamics as the regular model, although you have to make a few sacrifices with regard to towing capacity and performance under load. The steering feels a bit vague, making for less-than-stellar maneuverability.

Rivals?
The Aspen Hybrid ($55,995) is the first Chrysler vehicle to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by using alternative technology. Three other full-size SUVs are built on the same environmentally-friendly mold, including the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid 4WD ($69,765), GMC Yukon Hybrid 4WD ($70,530) and Mercedes-Benz GL320 CDI ($71,500). The price gap is quite significant.

Wrap-up
With the 2009 Aspen Hybrid, Chrysler has found a way to dispel most of the criticism usually directed at large SUVs. It offers greater fuel economy, great capabilities and a definite touch of luxury -- an interesting alternative for families who want to reduce their carbon footprint... provided that they swallow the required premium.
