The Kia Borrego is a luxury SUV priced slightly below other similar options on the market. The Borrego debuted in 2008 and has remained in production since that time. It is part of Kia’s image remake and nameplate change. The vehicle offers only a single style format, with no differences between different trim levels.

The Kia Borrego was made available with several different engine options. These included a 3.8-liter V6, a 4.6-liter V8 and a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, though not all engines were offered in all markets during production years. The vehicle made use of body-on-frame construction, though it remained a car-based SUV, rather than a truck based model. In addition, it was available with numerous options, both cosmetic and performance.

One of the most notable options was the availability of an air-suspension system on the vehicle. It also offered both a high and low range four-wheel drive transfer case, was available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive and was available with hill-descent control systems. In addition, with the right engine and transmission options, the vehicle offered a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs. The smaller V6 engine drops this capacity to 5,000 lbs. Other options on the Borrego included an available navigation system, as well as many other upgrades that generally cost much more with other luxury vehicles.

The Kia Borrego earned several awards throughout its lifetime. It was named the Best Kept Secret by Autobytel, during its design phase. It was also named the Top Rated SUV by Edmunds.com and earned a Consumer Reports Top Rated Vehicle Award. Finally, the Borrego earned high marks in all safety testing and crash testing, though it did not receive five stars in rollover testing, (SUVs tend to be top heavy and rarely receive anything higher than four stars in this category).
