A growing array of F1 teams have been developing young driver programs over the past few years. BMW ranked high among them while competing in the top-tier racing series, but in its absence, the teams it partnered with have picked up the proverbial mantle.



Williams Grand Prix, which ran with BMW engines and factory support from 2000-2005, is giving a test drive to one Dean Stoneman. The 20-year-old Brit recently won the Formula 2 title, a series to which Williams supplies the spec chassis.



After parting company with Williams, BMW acquired the Sauber F1 team, from which it has since divested. The Swiss outfit has likewise announced the signing of Esteban Gutierrez - pictured right, with Peter Sauber - as its test and reserve driver for next season.



The 19-year-old Mexican driver, who's been affiliated with the team for a couple of years now, recently claimed the championship in the new GP3 series, driving for the ART Grand Prix team run by Nicolas Todt, manager of former Sauber driver (and current Ferrari pilot) Felipe Massa, and son of FIA president and former Ferrari chief Jean Todt. Ferrari has had longstanding ties with Sauber, and currently supplies their engines.



Both drivers will be lining up alongside other aspiring talents at the post-season F1 young driver test in Abu Dhabi this coming November.

BMW's North American Vice President of Aftersales, Dan Creed, has been chosen to replace former marketing VP Jack Pitney, who passed away last month as the result of a tragic accident on his farm. Creed will pick up the reins of marketing as well as product planning and strategy for The Roundel in North America.



Creed has been with BMW since 1996, when he joined the automaker's Canadian arm. His past assignments for the company have included Canada's National Sales Manager and head of the Southern Region of BMWNA. In his role as the President of Aftersales, Creed presided over parts, service, accessories and lifestyle schwag for both Bimmer and Mini.

BMW ConnectedDrive - Click above for high-res image gallery

Good news, Apple fans. BMW has turned up the level of smart phone integration in its vehicles in a big way. The company will be showing off its new ConnectedDrive system at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The swank tech not only boasts Bluetooth wizardry and a text-to-speech function that will allow drivers to access text messages, memos, emails and the like from their Blackberry, it will also work with Apple iOS4. That means that the system clicks with the latest iPhone.



But wait, there's more.



The German manufacturer is also introducing something it calls iPod Out that's designed to make the most of using Apple music players in the vehicle. There's even a handy docking system for the iPad in the back seats. What's more, BMW will offer a mobile hotspot system with ConnectedDrive so that passengers can surf the web without burning up their data plans. Welcome to the brave new world. Spyker Cars has released an official statement confirming that it is in talks with BMW about future component sharing. The rumors surrounding this topic had initially suggested that BMW would lend Saab its Mini Countryman platform to underpin a smaller 9-2 model, but new reports indicate that the larger 9-3 could be the first to benefit from this partnership.



The next-generation Saab 9-3 is expected to launch in 2012. If the Spyker/BMW talks go well, the new 9-3 could be powered by an all-new Bimmer-sourced engine that produces around 220 horsepower, according to Bloomberg. BMW's EfficientDynamics technologies would naturally be used within this new powerplant, and according to the report, we shouldn't rule out the possibility of seeing this mill under the hood of the 9-5 flagship.



Of course, a teardrop-shaped Saab 9-2 is still on the table, with the automaker hoping to launch it by 2014 if it can find a partner. In addition to Countryman underworkings, Saab is reportedly hoping to use some of BMW's small-displacement diesel engines for use in the 9-2, as well.
