Geneva Preview: More details on Alpina B6 GT3 come to light
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupes, Sports/GTs, Geneva Motor Show, BMW  Click on the image above for a high-res gallery of the Alpina B6 GT3 More images and details of Alpina's B6 GT3 racer have hit the web, and it looks like despite spending two decades away from motorsports, there are no flies on the leading Bimmer tuning haus. Based on BMW's 6-Series coupe, the B6 weighs under 3,000 pounds and gets a supercharged 4.4-liter V8 that gives more than 520 horsepower and 535 pound-feet of torque. Backed by a six-speed X-Trac sequential gearbox, the car is reportedly capable of hitting 62 miles-per-hour in 3.9 seconds en route to a top whack of at least 177 mph (a speed it has already reached in testing on the Nürburgring). The B6 GT3 will debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show before going on to scrap with Aston Martin, Porsche, and Ferrari on circuits around the world. Alpina will field its own team (it is reportedly considering a number of pro drivers), but privateers will also be able to buy their own B6 if they fancy going it alone. Bangle rumored to resign over Project i
Filed under: Hirings/Firings/Layoffs, BMW  Earlier this week, the automobile world was shocked with news that BMW Design Chief Chris Bangle was not only retiring from his duties at BMW, but leaving the auto realm entirely. Say what you want about the direction that Bangle took BMW styling, but there's no evidence that the automaker wanted to see him go. In fact, all indications are that the German automaker wanted him to stay, even extending offers to take on other roles within the company. So, this begs the question: What made him leave? According to BMWBlog, the designer and his minions - especially his successor Adrian Von Hooydonk - disagreed on what direction to take on the upcoming Project i, which could either be released as its own brand or under the existing BMW or MINI tents. At this point, we don't have any indication which way Bangle was leading, but we should find out soon enough as the automaker has already given the project the green light. However, unlike the majority of SUVs that hit the roads at the end of the last decade, today's adventure bikes actually posses equal parts sport and utility. The Bavarian motorcycle maker kick-started the category with the seminal R 80 G/S in 1980 and today, it dominates the class. In the interim, the GS line has undergone a series of upgrades, switching from airhead to oilhead engines in 1994 and expanding its range of single and twin-cylinder bikes, including the F 650 GS, F 800 GS and the penultimate R 1200 GS Adventure. The 2009 R 1200 GS is the culmination of BMW's efforts and the genre as a whole. Since its introduction in 2004, the range-topping GS has been updated to include a revised servo-less ABS braking system, a slight bump in power and the addition of Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA). Lo-Res Rumormill: BMW PAS concept surfaces
Filed under: Spy Photos, Geneva Motor Show, Crossovers/CUVs, BMW  BMW's 5 series-based Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS) is due to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month, but the very low-res image you see above could be the first official shot of BMW's new segment-defying sedan. Although it's impossible to discern whether the pic is authentic, the design language is clearly an evolution of BMW's current aesthetic and the hatch bears a strong resemblance to the BMW X6. Since the PAS is built atop the 5 series platform, expect a range of both gasoline and diesel powertrains, including variants of the twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline six. Supposedly, European journalists will get a sneak peak of the concept tomorrow, so expect more details to be revealed as the lead up to the show unfolds. BMW's Art Cars start North American tour in Los Angeles

But while the collection of sixteen rolling works of art is permanently housed in BMW's museum in Munich, they've also traveled the world on various tours. The next one has already arrived in North America, with an exhibit opening today at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Four of the project's most famous works, those of Andy Warhol, Frank Stella (pictured above), Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg, will be on display, free of charge, in the BP Grand Entrance, from February 12-24, before they head off to New York's Grand Central Terminal from March 24-April 6, en route to three locations in Mexico thereafter. The display is complemented by a behind-the-scenes video of the artists at work, which you can view along with the press release after the jump and the images in the gallery below, but if you're in the LA area, we'd suggest stopping by the LACMA to see these spectacular mobile works of art for yourself.
