2012 Hyundai Genesis Prices Rise Slightly, R-Spec Model Starts at $47,350

Prices for the Hyundai Genesis sedan rise slightly for the 2012 model year, reflecting an array of engine and transmission upgrades which have also resulted in improved fuel economy. All Genesis sedans now employ a Hyundai-developed eight-speed automatic, replacing the former six-speed transmission.


The entry-level Genesis 3.8 now starts at $35,050 (including destination), a bump of $1250 over the 2011 model year sticker price. However, the car’s 3.8-liter V-6 engine has gained direct-injection, improving power from 290 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque, to 333 hp and 291 lb-ft. Along with the new eight-speed transmission, the 2012 Genesis 3.8 returns an EPA-rated 19 mpg city/29 highway, increases of one and two mpg, respectively, compared to the current Genesis 3.8.

The next step up is the Genesis 4.6 — formerly the range-topping model before the arrival of the R-Spec. Its 4.6-liter V-8 engine is unchanged at 385 hp and 333 lb-ft, but the switch to the eight-speed transmission bumps fuel economy from 17/25 mpg to 17/26 mpg. The Genesis 4.6 now starts at $45,350 (including destination), a slight increase versus the 2011 sticker of $43,800.

New for 2012 is the Genesis R-Spec, which has been tuned for more performance and sportier driving dynamics. It is motivated by a new 5.0-liter V-8 good for 429 hp and 376 lb-ft, unique 19-inch wheels bearing Bridgestone high-performance tires, and sportier tuning for the suspension and steering. The R-Spec stickers for $47,350 (including destination) and returns 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway.

Other changes for the 2012 Genesis include a redesigned grille, reshaped rocker panels, new headlights and taillights, retuned suspension dampers, and standard daytime running lights. The updated 2012 model is on sale now.
