BMW's M division releases more details, images of upcoming 1 Series M Coupe
Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, BMW BMW 1 Series M Coupe teasers - Click above for image gallery Fans of the original BMW M3 might not be enamored by the current V8 model, but the upcoming 1 Series M Coupe promises to bring it back to the source. The Bavarian automaker has released new information on the more compact M ahead of its full release in December ahead of the Detroit Auto Show where it'll be finally revealed to the public. The 1 Series M Coupe packs a 340-horsepower version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter six from the Z4 sDrive35iS in a package weighing about 3,300 pounds, with power fed to the wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual. This a departure from the "bare-bones" M3 GTS that packs a dual-clutch gearbox. Pricing is slated to come in between those of the existing 135i and M3, placing it somewhere around the $45k mark. Click below to check out the updated gallery of teaser images, including some new swirly ones. BMW returning to DTM in 2012
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Europe, BMW, Racing BMW is returning to the DTM - Click above for high-res image BMW has announced that it will once again knock fenders in the DTM. The company has said that it will make its way back to the race series for the 2012 season after a lengthy 18-year absence. The German automaker is in the process of restructuring its involvement in motorsport, and DTM is going to play a key part in that effort. According to the company's press release, BMW has been in talks with DTM organizers for some time about future regulations and technical requirements. After it began to look like the brand would in fact be welcome in the series once again, BMW broke the news to fans at the DTM race weekend at Hockenheimring. So far, it looks like the M3 will be the bruiser of choice for going toe-to-toe with the rest of the field, but as of right now, it's anyone's guess as to who will be behind the tiller when the green flag drops on the company team. Stay tuned and hit the jump for the full press release. First Drive: 2011 BMW X3
Filed under: Crossover, BMW, First Drive, Reviews, Luxury Refined, Not Redefined2011 BMW X3 - Click above for high-res image gallery Long before the segment-bending X6, BMW's crossover strategy was simple: offer the utility of a traditional SUV but in a package that's not only luxurious, but fun to drive. The original X5 Sport Now, luxury crossovers are a dime a dozen, and automakers are clamoring to be a part of the small CUV segment. In just the past few years, we've been introduced to the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Volvo XC60 and Infiniti EX35, among others. But as the X3 aged, its unusually harsh suspension and not-so-great interior plagued sales. In 2004, BMW moved roughly 35,000 X3s off dealer lots, and just last year, that number dropped to less than 10,000. Things aren't looking good for 2010, either. Instead of trying to reinvent the formula, BMW has improved on the X3's original idea by offering more refinement, top-notch driving dynamics and heaps of technology focused on efficiency and connectivity. The end result is a compact crossover ready to regain its spot at the head of the class. Find out if BMW succeeded after the jump. Photos copyright (C)2010 Steven J. Over the course of the quick five-minute clip, the designer touches on everything from his time with General Motors to the inner workings of the separate companies under the BMW banner when he arrived at the German manufacturer at age 35. Bangle also shares what he has tucked away in his own personal garage at the moment, including one very special classic. We won't spoil it for you. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself. Thanks for the tip, Chris A! Report: BMW to collaborate with Peugeot on hybrid system for FWD cars
Filed under: Hybrid, Technology, BMW, Peugeot The auto industry cross-pollination continues, with BMW and Peugeot having signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand their engineering collaboration to include a new hybrid system. Specifically, this will be a hybrid drive for front-wheel drive vehicles, marking a departure for both BMW and Peugeot.BMW's interest isn't a complete surprise since the Bavarian firm has been making more and more noise about city cars and a small FWD offering for the U.S market. Although there have been practically no details on BMW's so-called UKL line, this could be the development that provides a hybrid option for the range. It's possible that Mini might get this as well, but with a gaggle of tiny hybrids coming, like the expected Yaris-sized hybrid joining the Prius line, it's not a stretch to imagine BMW won't want to spread this around. The novel thing for Peugeot is also the turned wheels, but in a different way: their hybrid cars have used the motors to turn the rear wheels, while the fronts were pushed by the ICE. It remains to be seen where Peugeot will apply a dedicated FWD hybrid vehicle.
