  • Outside Air Temperature
  • Incoming Fuel Temperature
  • Engine Bay Temperature During Vehicle Operation
  • Fuel Flow Consumption Variation
  • Battery and Vehicle Charging System Condition
Electronic Test Results

These computer test results show the start up sequence from room temperature subsequent electronic cycles. We test each individual unit in this manner prior to dispatch.

This test indicates initial start up from 25 degrees C. Time Scale - 1 unit = 1 second, the side temperature scale - degrees Celciuis to 1 decimal place.

55 Degrees C is achieved in 60 seconds and the target temperature of 68 degrees is reached is 90 seconds.

This second computer analysis shows two cycles starting at 57 degrees, resetting at 70 degrees operation from start up. Time Scale - 1 unit = 10 seconds.

70 degrees is achieved in 30 seconds, heat retention to 55 degrees is 8 minutes 20 seconds.

Temperatures and times shown in these results are performed under laboratory conditions. Variations in vehicle air, engine, fuel and water temperatures may increase initial start up times and electronic heating cycle times. Colder temperatures will increase the frequency of heating cycles until your vehicles coolant has reached normal operating temperature. Temperatures are electronically stabilised between 55 and 70 degrees +/- 3°C.

**Before you buy**

What is the size of your fuel hose?
These units come with either 6mm (1/4"), 8mm (5/16"), 10mm (3/8") or 12mm (1/2") fuel sleeves. For rubber fuel hoses use internal diameter, for hard plastic hoses use outside diameter to determine the fuel sleeve size and corresponding fuel pipe required.

What is the internal diameter of your heater hose?
Connections are normally made at the heater hoses located at the bulkhead that feed your vehicles internal heater, the standard tee connector is 12mm, if you have 16mm or 19mm we offer a tee connector with a reducing branch.

How far is the unit to be fitted from your injector pump?
We supply this unit with 1m of approved high pressure fuel injection hose and 1m of 12mm approved and braided coolant hose. We give the option for you to buy an additional meter of either at £4.00 per meter. If you require more please let us know.

Do you need extra hose clips or connectors?
We sell these in our shop and have free post and packaging if bought with this heater unit.

All units are supplied pre wired, including relay, fuses and spare fuses, and can be fitted in under 60 minutes. Connections required 1 x ignition live 1 x battery live and 2 x earth connections. The LED switch requires a 19mm hole for flush fitting or can be stored securely out of the way.

Installation

The unit can be easily installed by any competent DIY mechanic. Full step by step installation instructions are supplied.

Connecting the electrics

2 Blue Scotchlok® connectors are supplied for connection to the ignition live and LED switch earth. The ring terminals allow bench testing prior to dispatch but can be used for termination. An inline fuse holder and 2 x 7.5 amp standard blade fuses are supplied.

Connection to the battery is via a 40 amp waterproof fuse holder, 2 x 40 amp fuses are supplied. Terminated ring terminals are supplied which can be cut to form blades if required.

Connecting the fuel pipes

The hose tails are secured with 4 jubilee clips (supplied). Most pipes can be cut and extended, if the pipe needs to be extended in any way, we carry a large variety of connectors in our shop.

Connection to Coolant pipes

Two 12mm x 12mm x12mm fuel tees are supplied as standard with 8 corresponding jubilee clips. For fitting it is recommended that the pipes leading to the vehicles internal dashboard heater are used. These pipes pass from the engine bay through the vehicles bulkhead. Most pipes are 12mm internal diameter, bit in addition we cater for 16mm and 19mm. The flow and return pipes are teed to fit at the two coolant points on the heat exchanger.

Full operating instructions are included.

Operation

When the unit is fitted as recommended it operates as follows:-
  • Turn on the ignition
  • Turn on switch
  • The LED on the switch will illuminate when the unit is in an electronic heating cycle
  • Ignition off = Unit isolated
  • Ignition on & Switch off = Unit isolated
  • Ignition on & Switch on & LED on = Unit in heating Cycle
  • Ignition on & Switch on & LED Goes out = Unit has reached correct operating temperature
  • Ignition on & Switch on & LED illuminates = Unit begins heating cycle
  • The LED light on the Switch will give you an actual indication of the electric heating status and will go out permanently when the vehicles coolant is up to temperature.
Quality Control

After CNC manufacture the housing is bathed in two chemicals to remove all contaminates and machining waste. This process is identical to automotive and aero engine manufacturing standards as any contaminates entering the fuel system after the filter can cause serious engine damage. Our process uses a proven method to avoid this. Simply blowing the unit clean is not sufficient to clear threading waste or chaff.

The aluminium we use meets BS1474 and is certified for use in aero and automotive components. All edges on our housings are flat machine milled to enable surface inspection.

The components we use can be traced through batch numbers to our suppliers. We only use items that are RoSH compliant.

Assembly

We use high performance sealants that are approved for use in fuel and cooling systems that are designed not to adversely react with fuel or antifreeze.
Fittings are tightened to the correct torque and an anti tamper mark is applied for warranty purposes. These units are supplied pre wired for installation.

We use over 15m of aero/automotive heat resistant cable and outer protection on our wiring looms. Our cable is marked with British Standard 6231 that has a heat resistance to 105°C. To further protect the cabling loom, an oil/diesel/heat resistant protecting cover is applied to areas that may be exposed to heat transfer from engine or exhaust parts providing protection up to 125°C.

The controlling 5 pin relay has a switch rating of 50amps. 4 pins are used on the relay with the 5th be available for further switching, if required. The temperature thermostat switch is positioned centrally for precise heat calculation.

All electrical connections and terminations are completed to EN61238-1 standards.

Testing

The housing is pressure tested prior to final electrical assembly. We test using diesel on fuel lines chambers and 50/50 water and anti freeze on the coolant chambers to 10 bar (145psi).

We electrically test all units on a jig which simulates actual use. The unit is operated for 30 complete cycles over a staggered 24 hour period to ensure that they fall within the heating tolerances. The unit is supplied with all electrical connections fitted, 4 wires require termination for use. Internal switch fitting is optional.

Serious consideration must be given to the types of heater designs currently available.

All our housings are designed to indirectly heat the fuel. i.e. the glow plugs heat the block and the block heats the fuel. There are a small number of heaters available where the actual glow plug is in direct contact with the fuel. This can cause chamber choking and injector damage as the method can boil the fuel prior to combustion which degrades the ignition characteristics of the fuel.

A number of suppliers use aluminium plate type heater exchanges, though normally designed for gas and water circuits in boiler systems the chances of internal cross contamination increase in this situation because of the higher number of plates used to increase the heating surface area. They also contain a greater volume of fuel which can vastly increase the time and fuel consumption when purging in combination with a twin tank solution.

Flexible Rubber and Stainless Steel Pipe in Pipe systems such as those used in “Smart Veg ®” have a small diameter inner pipe and exterior rubber hose that have compression seals. These generally have to be insulated as they have poor heat retention. When these systems fail internally they can leak in 2 ways. Firstly, water into fuel will cause injector pump and injector damage. Secondly, fuel into water will eventually cause seals around the water pump bearings to fail along with that mayonnaise like looking substance when a head gasket has failed. The worst scenario is that a failure may not be noticed until serious damage has occurred.

Ridged Stainless Pipe in Pipe systems can vary in length, the choice is determined through fuel consumption and installation space. A major drawback with these units is from foreign body contamination from the solder which may be loose or hanging following assembly. Most Suppliers of these items give only a vague warranty with footnote to put the reasonability on user to ensure the item is free from contamination. Rigid pipe in pipe systems cannot be visually checked for loose or hanging solder. The reason solder is not used in automotive fuel systems is because one small piece of loosened solder can cause catastrophic injector pump damage that will cost hundreds of pounds to repair. Housings of this nature are usually placed post filter and pre pump.

Avoid any heater that has any form of copper in its construction. This will adversely react with bio diesel and vegetable oil. Just a few PPM (part per million) of copper in vegetable oil will change the oxidation stability. In SVO/PPO systems, with a catalytic metal, decomposition of the vegetable oil will occur, and the effects it has on the fuel properties have an impact on the engine performance, engine conditions (lifetime) and emissions composition

In the unlikely event that our housings leak, there is no risk of cross contamination and leaks can be spotted from external inspection.

Fuel Compatibility

The unit is compatible with the following fuel standards
EN590, DIN 51606 & EN14214).
EN590 describes the physical properties that all diesel fuel must meet if it is to be sold in the EU, It allows the blending of up to 5% Biodiesel with 'normal' DERV - a 95/5 mix. In some countries such as France, all diesel sold routinely contains this 95/5 mix.
DIN 51606 is a German standard for Biodiesel, is considered to be the highest standard currently existing, and is regarded by almost all vehicle manufacturers as evidence of compliance with the strictest standards for diesel fuels. The vast majority of Biodiesel produced commercially meets or exceeds this standard.
EN14214, EN14214 is the standard for biodiesel now having recently been finalized by the European Standards organisation.

SVO - straight vegetable oil used as diesel fuel (usually new oil, fresh, uncooked)

PPO - pure plant oils, same as SVO: PPO is the term most often used in Europe

WVO - waste vegetable oil (used cooking oil, "grease", fryer oil, probably including animal fats or fish oils from the cooking)

UCO - used cooking oil (what we called it in the first place until everyone started calling it WVO, even if it wasn't necessarily all vegetable)

BIODIESEL - B100 and other mixes

This unit is Compatible with the following Engine Types

IDI - Indirect Injection diesel engines: the fuel is injected into a pre-chamber or swirl-chamber before going on to the combustion chamber. Pre-chamber engines are more tolerant of SVO than swirl-chamber engines.

Types of DI diesels:
DI - Direct Injection diesel engines: the fuel is injected straight into the combustion chamber.
TDI - Turbo Direct Injection

As a single tank system this unit is NOT compatible with CDI or CRD - Common-rail Direct Injection or (PDI or PD - Pumpe Düse Unit Injection (Direct Injection, each injector has its own pump)

The optimum fuel temperature of biodiesel and WVO/SVO/PPO at the injector is between 60 and 75°C. At this temperature the viscosity is similar to that of diesel.

This unit is intended to complement Bosch Fuel Pumps using Vegetable Oil mixes with diesel or bio diesel, Single and two tank conversion systems. Lucus and other fuel pumps should only be used with standard diesel or biodiesel, but you should check your vehicles compatibility first. It is recommended that a small auxiliary heater is fitted before your lift pump or fuel filter. Unsatisfactory conversion measures can lead to engine or fuel system damage. You can Google search your car/van make and model with “vegetable oil conversion” to see if it has been previously converted.
