It was 1984 when the
Volkswagen GTI powertrain was combined with a trunk in the form of the
Jetta GLI. To mark the 30th anniversary, starting next year
Volkswagen will only be offering the GLI Edition 30 (click image above to
enlarge), distinct from the current 2014 on sale by details like 18-inch "Laguna" wheels, a decklid spoiler and Edition 30 badging outside, red accents on the V-Tex leatherette seats, steering wheel and shifter inside.
Power has moved up a skosh in 30 years, the original model's 90-horsepower, 1.8-liter engine supplanted by a 201-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo unit shifted through six close-ratio gears instead of five. The trim options will drop from three to two, the GLI Edition 30 coming in either standard spec or with navigation.
Prices haven't been announced, but the press release
