Brake-light problems and corrosion damage make
Hyundai recalling nearly one million cars in the US
According to a report obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Web site, Hyundai has issued its largest ever voluntarily recall for nearly 1 million of its cars sold in the US market. As a part of four separate recall campaigns, the company is recalling 963.305 vehicles to be in-need for an inspection.
First recall that is affecting up to 531.894 Accent, Tucson, Veracruz, Entourage, Santa Fe, Elantra, Sonata and Azera models produced in-between 2005 and 2008 is related to a malfunctioning stop lamp switch that may prevent brake lights from illuminating when the pedal is depressed or may cause the brake lights to remain illuminated when the brake pedal has been released - detailed NHTSA Campaign report:09V122000.
Second Hyundai recall relates to corrosion of the front sub-frame that is progressive and may result in thinning or perforation of the sub-frame steel. It affects 175.765 Hyundai Sonata, XG00 and XG350 models built from 1999 to 2004. Possible consequence could be a separation of the forward mounting of the lower control arm, which may increase the risk of a crash. The recall is limited to the regions of the country (*Salt Belt States) where salt is used to de-ice roads in the winters - NHTSA Campaign 09V124000.
Other two recalls are also limited to Salt Belt States and are affecting 170.610 2001-2003 Elantra and Tiburon models and 85.036 MY01-03 Santa Fe models - NHTSA Campaigns 09V125000 and 09V123000.
Hyundai owners may contact Hyundai Customer Assistance Center for additional recall information at 1-800-633-5151. The recall is expected to begin during April 2009.
