What is it? Nissan has released the 2nd-generation Versa entry-level compact sedan. The new model is expected to achieve 37 mpg highway—an improvement of 5 mpg with a reduction in emissions and weight. The wheelbase and width are the same as the outgoing model, but the new Versa is lower in height and slightly shorter in length. The trunk, however, has increased over 2 inches.

Nissan claims the interior has a more upscale feel and more legroom than a 5 Series BMW. It will also have available navigation, satellite, and Bluetooth capabilities. All Versas will come standard with air conditioning, ESC, CD/radio and aux, and power steering assist.

The new 1.6-liter 4-cylinder has a dual-injection system and variable timing control similar to the Juke and Maxima.

Pricing is set to start at $10,990.

What’s new or notable? The Versa will be the first Nissan model to have PureDrive, a suite of technologies to lower CO2 emissions.

When will it be available? Summer 2011
