Every spring, the finest automobiles ever to grace tarmac gather on the shores of Lake Como for the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. It's a chance for the most beautiful classics to compete for awards and for automakers and design studios to show off their concept cars under the soft light of the Italian sun. But while most of the vehicles old and new that show up for the concours are ones we've seen before, BMW takes things a step further.

As patron of the concorso d'eleganza for the past ten years, BMW regularly cooks up something new for the glamorous extravaganza. Last year it teamed up with Pininfarina for the Gran Lusso Coupé and revealed it alongside the Concept 90 motorcycle. The year before that came the BMW Zagato Coupe, preceded by the 328 Hommage and the M1 Hommage (pictured above) before it.

The theme for this year's event is the Roaring Twenties. BMW may not have been known back then on the same level as Bugatti or Duesenberg, but Rolls-Royce sure was.

This year BMW is keeping up the momentum it set at last year's event by bringing two concepts to the estate at Cernobbio: one car and one motorbike. The German automaker hasn't given us much to go on to guess what form they might take, but it has left us a few breadcrumbs.

For one, the theme for this year's event is the Roaring Twenties - a glamorous era that kicked off only a few years after BMW was founded. The company may not have been known back then for producing the same level of glamorous automobiles that names like Bugatti, Duesenberg or even Mercedes-Benz were... but its Rolls-Royce brand sure was. We wouldn't be surprised, then, to see either a Rolls or a Bimmer with some retro art deco cues take center stage at the lakeside expo, joined by an equally retro two-wheeler from BMW Motorrad, which started production in 1923 with the original R32.

For another clue, we couldn't help but notice that, while BMW's DesignworksUSA studio (which maintains offices in California, Munich and Shanghai) was not mentioned anywhere in the text of the press release below... but it was tagged on the company's press site with the studio's name. So we wouldn't be surprised, either, to see Designworks having a hand in at least one of the concepts' gestation.
Continue reading BMW preparing two concepts for Villa d'Este

BMW preparing two concepts for Villa d'Este originally appeared on Autoblo g on Thu, 20 Mar 2014 07:58:00 EST.
