BMW X1 to be built in Leipzig

The news confirms rumors that the X1, which has yet to be revealed publicly, will indeed be built on the 3-series platform, lending some amount of sporting cred to the mini 'ute.<br /><br />BMW hasn't announced what exact markets the X1 is destined for, but the decision to produce in Liepzig is part of BMW's efforts to shift production into the regions in which its vehicles are primarily sold. As such, the next X3 will join the X5 and X6 at BMW's Spartanburg plant, instead of the Magna center where it's currently produced.<br /><br />Expect the BMW X1 to be revealed later this year or early in 2009.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetai lNews/idUSL3042271320080530">Re uters</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetai lNews/idUSL3042271320080530>Rea d</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/30/bmw-x1-to-be-built-in-leipzig/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1210724/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/30/bmw-x1-to-be-built-in-leipzig/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

BMW to add further features, complications, to iDrive

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Gadgets</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/tech/" rel="tag">Tech</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/05/31/exclusive-more-customizable-idriverther-customizable/#more-288"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" align="top" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/idrive.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><br />These days, technology and customization go hand-in-hand. Laptop computers and MP3 players now come in a rainbow of colors and your computer's operating system can be made to suit your unique preferences. BMW has big plans in store for its oft-criticized iDrive system which would make it and the vehicle in which it's installed extremely customizable as well. Simple choices such as color schemes and screensavers for the iDrive's graphical user interface pale in comparison to the ability to adjust transmission shift points and engine boost levels in an effort to either increase fuel economy or improve overall performance. Multiple users will be able to make their own adjustments and save their settings and the car will know the driver based on which key fob is in close proximity. <br /><br />There are way too many new features planned for iDrive than there is space in this post to display them. For the complete and exhaustive rundown, <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/05/31/exclusive-more-customizable-idriverther-customizable/#more-288">click here</a>. Thankfully, changes will be accessible from a web-enabled computer, which should simplify the in-car user interface somewhat. Rest assured, though, BMW's iDrive, already overcomplicated in the opinion of many, won't be disappearing from its dash-mounted perch anytime soon. <em>Thanks for the tip, gear_shift!</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/05/31/exclusive-more-customizable-idriverther-customizable/#more-288">BimmerFile</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/05/31/exclusive-more-customizable-idriverther-customizable/#more-288>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/01/bmw-to-add-further-features-complications-to-idrive/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1211814/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/01/bmw-to-add-further-features-complications-to-idrive/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

Project Track Slut, Part Two: Suspension

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/garage/" rel="tag">Garage</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/825626/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/ts_lead_2_450op.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><em>Click above for a high-res gallery detailing the install</em><br /><br />With over 140,00 miles on the clock, the stock suspension of our BMW 318is project car was far from ready for its upcoming track assault, and the stiffer sidewalls and stickier rubber we fitted in our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/03/project-track-slut-part-one-pick-a-weapon-on-the-cheap/">first installment</a> accentuated the tired springs and shocks. Thankfully, the popularity of the E36 chassis makes shopping for new suspension bits an easy, if slightly overwhelming, affair. The choices range from pieced together spring/shock combos to race-ready coilovers, so we decided to split the difference with one of <a href="http://www.hrsprings.com/products/cupkits/">H&R's Touring Cup Kits</a> (31005T-1). The package includes springs and shocks that lower the front by 1.5-inches and the rear by one inch, balancing ride comfort and stiffness while allowing us to traverse speed bumps without having to worry about teetering on our oil pan.<br /><br />Hit the jump to read our impressions on how the H&R kit fared during our first week of testing and you can read through the entire suspension swap in our tagged gallery below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/">Project BMW 318is - H&R Cup Kit Install</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/825626/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/01_pts_h_r_install_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/825635/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/02_pts_h_r_install_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/825636/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/03_pts_h_r_install_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/825655/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/04_pts_h_r_install_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/project-bmw-318is-handr-cup-kit-install/825656/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/05_pts_h_r_install_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/28/project-track-slut-part-two-getting-it-stiff/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Project Track Slut, Part Two: Suspension</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/28/project-track-slut-part-two-getting-it-stiff/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1206311/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/28/project-track-slut-part-two-getting-it-stiff/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

CAR claims BMW M1 destined for production

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/supercars/" rel="tag">Supercars</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/774731/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/bmw_m1homage_hi_02_450-op.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><em>Click above for a high-res gallery of the BMW M1 Hommage concept.</em><br /><br /><a href="http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/First-Official-Pictures/BMW-supercar-stars-in-CARs-new-issue/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/1coverjuly_225-op.jpg" alt="" /></a>The July issue of <em>CAR</em> magazine features an exclusive interview with BMW board member Herbert Diess in which the exec reveals that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/27/modern-retro-bmw-m1-homage-officially-revealed/">M1 Hommage concept</a> is destined for production. Diess says, "We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car," but <em>CAR</em> doesn't divulge too many secrets online (they are, after all, in the business of selling dead trees). The Brit pub gives up a few teasers about the mid-engine supercar, namely that it won't be called the M1, BMW's plan to fit "heron-wing" doors and a powertrain line-up that will include three engine choices. On that last bit, we'd suspect that the twin-turbo'd 3.0-liter engine would be a suitable entry-level mill, followed by the M3's V8 and the M5/M6's V10, with the latter benefiting from a duo of turbochargers. It's all speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait for the July issue to hit UK newsstands tomorrow, with sales in the U.S. beginning later this week.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/">BMW M1 Hommage</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/774730/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_m1homage_hi_01_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="BMW M1 Family Tree" title="BMW M1 Family Tree" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/774731/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_m1homage_hi_02_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/774732/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_m1homage_hi_03_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/774733/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_m1homage_hi_04_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m1-homage/774734/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/bmw_m1homage_hi_05_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/First-Official-Pictures/BMW-supercar-stars-in-CARs-new-issue/">CAR</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/First-Official-Pictures/BMW-supercar-stars-in-CARs-new-issue/>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/27/i-car-i-claims-bmw-m1-destined-for-production/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1207077/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/27/i-car-i-claims-bmw-m1-destined-for-production/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

BMW to raise prices by 1% to counter weak dollar

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/carbuying/" rel="tag">Car Buying</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/euro/" rel="tag">Euro</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/earnings-financials/" rel="tag">Earnings/Financials</a></p><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&sid=aOu 6t5_Yv2Is&refer=germany"> <img width="250" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="222" border="0" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/roundel_crop_450.jpg" alt="" /></a>Most would argue that BMWs already flirt with being overpriced, though Munich would argue with you. The dollar's drop has hurt BMW's ability to earn a margin on each vehicle it sells in the United States, so prices will be bumped by one-percent beginning in June. BMW has taken a 17-percent whack in income for the first three months of 2008 as sales have slowed, the dollar weakened, low resale values, and bad debts have cost the luxury automaker. Though it's facing a slight slowdown due to those factors, a one-percent price increase is relatively modest, and shouldn't cause much consternation when it comes time to sign on the dotted line, though it makes the 135 that much more rareified. As long as it keeps vehicles like the M3 coming, we'll gladly let you pay more for your X6 -- we weren't getting one, anyway. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&sid=aOu 6t5_Yv2Is&refer=germany"> Bloomberg</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&sid=aOu 6t5_Yv2Is&refer=germany>R ead</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/27/bmw-to-raise-prices-by-1-to-counter-weak-dollar/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1206015/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/27/bmw-to-raise-prices-by-1-to-counter-weak-dollar/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

GG Quadster: Impending doom on four wheels

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/motorcycles/" rel="tag">Motorcycles</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/special-limited-editions/" rel="tag">Special/Limited Editions</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/822150/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" align="top" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/gg_quadster.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><em>click above for high-res gallery of the GG Quadster</em><br /><br />We took a look at the original <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/03/24/bmw-motivated-quad-sure-to-scare-riders-financial-planners/">GG Quad</a> a little while back and poked fun at its piddly 106-mph top speed, which is primarily due to its mild-mannered 85-horsepower air-cooled boxer engine that displaces 1150cc. Consider that small problem <a href="http://www.fasterandfaster.net/2008/05/quadzilla-ii-gg-quadster.html">resolved</a>. The new GG Quadster utilizes Bavaria's latest liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine, which displaces just a bit more at 1200cc but offers a heck of a lot more grunt: 167 horses to be exact. Yep, that's just about double the ponies, and it has the desired effect on the quad; 0 to 60 drops from about five seconds to just three and a half. With its super-fat rubber, six-speed sequential gearbox and reverse gear, this latest version of the quad-of-death should offer plenty of pants peeing performance. As much as we'd love to have one of these machines, getting it registered for street use in the States would likely be an exercise in frustration. Too bad, because the fuel mileage is probably pretty good, which is exactly the purpose for this machine, right?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/">GG Quadster</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/822106/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/quadster_large_1_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/822134/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/quadster_large_33_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/822150/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/quadster_large_42_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/822145/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/quadster_large_10_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/gg-quadster/822110/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/quadster_large_45_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.fasterandfaster.net/2008/05/quadzilla-ii-gg-quadster.html">Faster and Faster</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.fasterandfaster.net/2008/05/quadzilla-ii-gg-quadster.html>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/23/gg-quadster-impending-doom-on-four-wheels/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1201178/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/23/gg-quadster-impending-doom-on-four-wheels/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

More details emerge as Veritas RS III gears up for production

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/supercars/" rel="tag">Supercars</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/veritas-rs-iii/820441/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/veritas_rs_iii_3-web.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><em>Click to view the Veritas RS III in our hi-res gallery</em></p>
<p>Regular readers will recall that about a month ago, our man Chris Tutor grabbed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/24/spied-on-the-nuerburgring-you-tell-us/">a photo of a mysterious</a> car standing at the gates of the vaunted Nurburgring Nordschleiffe. We all hazarded our guesses, but it was our astute reader PandaBeat who identified it as the Veritas RS3, a concept roadster that appeared in 2001. After that we got <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/05/spied-on-the-nuerburgring-again-veritas-rs3/">some better photos</a> and even <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/07/video-confirmed-veritas-testing-at-the-nurburgring/">a video</a> of the concept car at the 'Ring, and now some more juicy details have emerged as well.</p>
<p>Sources suggest that the Veritas RS III - conceived and executed by a small team of seven enthusiasts who resuscitated the name of Germany's first grand prix race team, spun off from BMW - will begin production at the end of this year at a rate of 50 examples per year. Instead of the BMW V12 in the concept, the production version is tipped to carry a tuned version of BMW's celebrated 5.0-liter V10 tuned to develop 600 horsepower. With that much power in a carbon-kevlar construction and minimal bodywork, we doubt the Veritas RS III will have any trouble meeting its projected 0-62 time of 3.2 seconds, but your neck muscles had better be as strong as an F1 driver's or an NFL linebacker's to withstand the wind forces slapping against your helmet at 216 mph.</p>
<p>Check out the gallery below for some fresh images from the manufacturer, and the one below that for the original shots from the Nurburgring.</p>
