Officially Official: 2012 BMW 1 Series coupe and convertible take a bow

<sma ll>2012 BMW 1 Series - Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW recently pulled the wraps off of its hot new 1 Series M Coupe, but this new addition to the automaker's least expensive range isn't the only changes on tap for the 2012 model year. Both the coupe and convertible versions of the 128i and 135i receive modest upgrades for 2012, including very, very slight styling updates and a new powertrain for the 135i.

Up front, 1 Series cars equipped with Xenon headlamps (optional on 128i, standard on 135i) receive a new horizontal LED eyebrow to complement the corona running lamps. Out back, newly tweaked taillamps use LED running lamps similar to those on the rest of the BMW product line. The 1 Series also gets a tweaked M Sport package that includes an aero kit (standard on the 135i), increased top speed limiter and more sporting suspension geometry. Additionally, M Sport cars are fitted with sport seats and M-branded interior trim components.

Much like its older brother, the 3 Series, the 135i is now powered by BMW's N55 3.0-liter inline-six which uses a single twin-scroll turbocharger to produce 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. In addition to the standard row-it-yourself six-speed transmission, the 135i can now be had with BMW's seven-speed DCT that first debuted in the Z4 roadster. Fitting this new engine means that the 135i Coupe can run to 60 miles per hour in five seconds flat with DCT and 5.1 seconds with the manual (add 0.3 seconds to those respective times for the droptop 135i). The base 128i continues to use the naturally aspirated 3.0-liter mill found in the outgoing model, rated at 230 hp and 200 lb-ft and paired with six-speed manual or Steptronic transmissions.

Pricing for the 2012 1 Series will be revealed closer to the car's on-sale date in the Spring of 2011, and we wouldn't expect the current base price of $29,450 for the 128i and $36,350 for the 135i to change much. Follow the jump for BMW's exhaustive press release that details the full host of changes.
Martha Stewart and her crew descended on BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina production facility where the automaker builds its X3 crossover, as well as the X5 and X6. Stewart designed and built her own X3 through BMW's "Dream It. Build It. Drive it." program, allowing for more than 70 million unique configurations including a handful of exclusive hues.

When the show airs, viewers are able to enter a contest to win an X3 of their own, however it doesn't appear that Martha is looking to usurp Oprah in the you-get-a-car category of giveaways.
2012 BMW 6 Series Convertible drops its top (again) ahead of Detroit debut

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, Convertible, Performance, BMW, Luxury

<sma ll>2012 BMW 6 Series Convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery

With dozens of automakers churning out hundreds of different models on a continuous basis, the automotive industry has the potential for being downright chaotic. What saves it from such an eventuality is a measure of order: cars categorized into groups, segments, markets and bodystyles. That, and a certain measure of chronology.

You see, when an automaker is about to introduce a new vehicle - whether production-ready or conceptual - they typically (though not necessarily) do so at a major auto show. But before they pull the tarp off the car on the show floor, they often release some photos and details to let us know what to expect.

BMW, however, played by different rules when it came to the new 6 Series. The Bavarian automaker released images and info on its new convertible around the time of the Los Angeles Auto Show, but didn't unveil the car there. Instead, it'll be doing that at next month's Detroit Auto Show. There, we'll have our first chance to see the new model (along with the new X3, the revised 1 Series coupe and convertible and the new 1 Series M Coupe) up close and personal for the first time, after mulling over that first batch of shots and specs for the past month or so. And just to keep things hoppin', Munich has dropped a new batch of photos of the 2012 droptop, which we've placed in an embiggened gallery below for your viewing pleasure.

Here in the States, the first of the new generation Sixers we'll see will be the 650i Convertible, with a turbocharged V8 giving 400 horsepower. Backed by either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed auto, the four-seat convertible figures to be a compelling performer.
Report: BMW's next supercar coming in 2013 for $200,000

Filed under: Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, BMW

<sma ll>BMW Vision EfficientDynamics prototype - Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW is set to change the way we think about supercars with its Vision EfficientDynamics concept. This swoopy economical machine is estimated to produce around 328 horsepower from its three-cylinder diesel hybrid powertrain, and fuel economy is claimed to be a lofty 62.5 miles per gallon.

While speaking to Inside Line recently, the automaker's sales and marketing director, Ian Robertson, announced that the car will cost roughly €150,000, or about $200,000 USD when it goes on sale. That's indeed a pretty penny, but it's put into perspective when you consider that Mercedes-Benz's upcoming efficient supercar, the SLS E-Cell, is rumored to cost around $250,000.

No official timeframe has been given as to when we'll see the debut of the production-ready EfficientDynamics supercar, but Inside Line states that BMW is sponsoring the 2012 London Olympics, so we should look for the car to debut at that time. It's indeed a vast change from the eight-, ten- and twelve-cylinder hotties that currently make up the supercar segment, but with the changing times putting a larger emphasis on efficiency, BMW's end result should still be pretty sweet.
Video: BMW subliminal ad burns logo onto your eyelids

Filed under: Etc., Marketing/Advertising, Technology, Videos, BMW

<sma ll>BMW Motorrad subliminal advertising - click above to watch the video

How far is this from having the ads at eye-level in a pubic urinal?

BMW recently created a special video advertisement, and those that viewed it had no choice but to remember it. Huh?

It was shown at a movie theater in Germany and left viewers with an image of the BMW logo imprinted on the back of their eyelids. How did they do that?

When you look at the sun and then close your eyes you see a circular dot as if projected on the back of your eyelids. BMW used the same technique, using a large Profoto Pro-7B flash unit, a big version of the flash utilized on digital cameras. In front of the flash device was a hollowed out BMW logo. The audience couldn't see it as it sat behind the screen they were viewing the advert on.

During the ad, the motorcycle driver tells the audience to close their eyes. For those that followed, they saw the BMW logo.

No big complaints yet of taking subliminal advertising to a new height. But the people who saw the ad also reported seeing a lot of genitalia images in the ice in every liquor ad they saw the same day.
