The 2011 BMW X3 is ready for prime time, with all-new sheet-metal and an equally new interior, a choice of efficient inline six engines and a standard eight-speed transmission. If that sounds like an enticing package, you can now head over to BMW's official website to build your own. The base X3 28i will set you back $37,625, but for that price you'll have to go with non-metallic black or white paint and a Leatherette interior. For another $550, there are eight different metallic paints from which to choose.

On the interior front, there are four different leather options to choose, each of which will set you back $1,450. A fully loaded 28i comes in at $52,150 and includes several different option packages including a $3,450 Premium Package, which includes the $1,450 leather seats and a $3,200 Technology Package with navigation and audio inputs.

Move up to the 300-horsepower X3 xDrive 35i and the base price rockets to $41,925, or $4,300 more than the non-turbo 28i. Max out the available packages and add options like smart phone integration and rear camera and you're looking at an MSRP of $56,750. All prices include $875 destination...
BMW Unscripted presents: Sabine Schmitz "Queen of the N?¼rburgring" video

<sma ll>Click above to watch the video after the jump

When we think of the best jobs on earth, professions like Formula 1 driver come to mind. Taxi driver doesn't usually come to mind for most, but hot-footed Sabine Schmitz drives a different kind of cab. The speed-loving young lady drives a BMW M5 around the Nürburgring, and not just for fun - she gets paid to drive adrenaline junkies around the 'Ring at high speeds, and she's so good at what she does that she's earned the nickname "Queen of the Nürburgring." Schmitz's accomplishments don't end with her taxi job, either - she's also won 45 races at the Nordschleife, or 45 more races than any of us.

BMW featured Schmitz in it's Unscripted series, "a series about people, talking about their life, passion and joy with the brand BMW." Hit the jump to watch Schmitz ply her trade on the world's most famous track, and try not to get jealous of one of the world's best jobs. Her office does, after all, take the size and shape of a BMW M5, and that certainly can't suck.
BMW does the twist-and-go with Concept C scooter [w/video]

<sma ll>BMW Motorrad Concept C - Click above for high-res image gallery

Say what you will about motor scooters, but twist-and-go is how an inordinate proportion of the world's population gets around town. Simply put, there is no simpler way of getting through crowded city streets, and let's face it: city streets are only getting more crowded. With that in mind, BMW - one of the few automakers that builds four-wheeled vehicles as well as two - has unveiled its vision for the next generation of large motor scooters, which it calls Concept C.

Drawing on decades of experience building full-size motorcycles, BMW Motorrad has delved into the scooter market with a fresh concept that brings familiar design cues from its existing lineup of off-road, touring and sport bikes to a commuter form. In short, BMW is "expanding its present motorcycle adventure world to include the big scooter." Their words, not ours.

Instead of reinventing the wheel as other companies have tried, the Concept C is powered by a conventional two-cylinder engine mated to a continuously-variable transmission, although consideration is being given to future electric powertrains. The front fork features dual disc brakes accompanied by a single disc in the back and supported by ABS. LED headlights illuminate the road ahead, while dual LCD monitors provide the instrumentation.

There's more to read in the press release after the jump, accompanied by video footage and the high-resolution image mega-gallery below.
Report: BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics approved for production

Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Hybrid, BMW, Electric

<sma ll>BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

According to the folks who follow all things BMW, the automaker's Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) concept has been given the greenlight and a few details on the green machine have come along for the ride.

The VED's will reportedly carry either the i1 or i100 name, and that moniker will be placed on a chassis made of carbon fiber and powered first by either by a gas hybrid or fully electric motor. About a month ago it was rumored the coupe would first be available with the drivetrain from the ActiveHybrid 5 Concept, which itself was derived from the ActiveH ybrid 7 Series. That option would be good for 300 horsepower thanks to a TwinPower turbo paired with a 40 kW electric motor and running through an eight-speed transmission.

The ultimate hybrid variant, however, would be a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder motor with 181 horsepower, paired to two electric motors each putting out 93 ponies. Output would be channled through a double-clutch transmission, and while the hybrid is supposed to be all-wheel drive, a rear-wheel drive model is supposedly planned as well - perhaps the sole electric version.

All that juice in a carbon fiber body shouldn't disappoint, and predicted numbers are a 0-to-62 mph run of four seconds, 58 miles per gallon, yet a lower-than-expected 250-mile range. The price for all that green when it appears in 2013: from €125,000 to €175,000 ($174,145 to $243,817 U.S. at today's rates). Which is why we suppose it makes (rumored) sense that BMW would only plan on building "30,000 units within five years."

Officially Official: BMW confirms Efficient Dynamics production [w/video]

Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, BMW, Electric

<sma ll>BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics prototype - Click above for high-res image gallery

Sure, BMW is going to build a small, urban electric car - the Megacity - in a few years, but we're pretty sure there are a lot of Bimmer drivers who won't much care for that little thing, no matter what the powertrain. For them, BMW has announced a second treat today: the Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) concept will indeed make the jump to production form.

We first saw the VED a little over a year ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009 and BMW says the concept was met with an "overwhelming response." Little surprise, then, that BMW was interested in building this for the people - well, people who can afford the $200,000, give or take, the car will likely cost when it come to market in a few years. Since the VED contained a fair bit of "completely or virtually production-ready components," BMW is confidently giving out media test drives at the Leipzig trade fair center of a road-ready technology showcase vehicle based on the VED.

Final production numbers won't be known for a while, but the prototype features wing doors and a 2+2 seating arrangement. Underhood, a three-cylinder turbo diesel engine "with a hybrid synchronous motor at the front axle and a full-hybrid engine at the rear axle" put out a total of 241 kW/328 bhp and hits 0-100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in just 4.8 seconds. The sleek car can do this while burning just 3.76 litters of fuel per 100 kilometers (a Toyota Prius-beating 62.5 miles per gallon U.S.) and emitting 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The production VED will also be a plug-in, with the ability to go 50 km (31 miles) on lithium-polymer battery power. Hit the jump for the full details in BMW's press release, as well as a video of the Efficient Dynamics prototype.
