Consumer Reports still loves redesigned Infiniti M37, likes Hyundai Genesis 4.6 a lot

The <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/m/">Infiniti M37</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/genesis+sedan">Hyundai Genesis V8</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series">BMW 5 Series</a> were tested in the latest issue of <em>Consumer Reports</em>, and the results were fairly predictable. All three vehicles received ratings of "Excellent," though each vehicle's road to the top came from a different direction. <br />

The newly redesigned M37 remains CR's top-rated midsize luxury sedan for its combination of performance, luxury and comfort. CR chief David Champion credits the M for combining "agile handling, a taut yet comfortable ride, and a beautifully-finished interior." Solid praise, indeed. The BMW 535i's top rating comes on the heels of a test that revealed the new sedan as quick, luxurious and fuel efficient. Interestingly, CR believes that the new 5 Series has lost some of its trademark agility for 2011. <br />

While the M37 is the top-rated midsize luxury sedan the V8-powered Hyundai Genesis could be the big winner of this test. South Korea's best nailed the test with the most power of the three vehicles tested and the lowest price tag of the group. We're not talking a couple thousand bucks, either. The Genesis was $10,000 cheaper than the M and $15,000 less than the BMW. The dark-horse luxury sedan was called spacious and smooth, though the 'built for comfort' chassis was called out for being "not that sporty." Both the M37 and Genesis have been granted the coveted CR "Recommended" label, while the 5 Series doesn't have enough reliability data available to qualify just yet. That wasn't a call I was expecting, especially in the late summer of 2010. As far as I was concerned, any car from the 1980s still on the road was sure to be showing a few hundred thousand miles, springs coming through the seats and air conditioning blowing warm.<br />

However, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> North America was on the other end of the phone, and the vehicle we were discussing had been pulled out of a factory museum on the East Coast and shipped to California in a covered truck. Not only did it have low miles, but this unique model was in near-mint condition.<br />
<br />
The 1988 BMW M5 is special in more ways than one. In addition to being the first-generation M5, its production was extremely limited and each and every copy sold in North America was jet black with blacked-out trim. And there was the powerplant... BMW had essentially dropped the M1's 24-valve 3.5-liter racing engine under the hood.<br />

The highly-anticipated <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/BMW+1+Series+M+Coupe/">BMW 1 Series M Coupe</a> can't arrive fast enough. Roundel fans are calling it a return to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW's</a> driver-focused roots, and the lightened <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/1+series">1 Series</a> with more power and a manual gearbox is aimed squarely at people who want a focused experience behind the wheel. So when's it arriving? According to the first round of prototype driving reports, the newest M car will debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">2011 Detroit Auto Show</a> in January. <br />

After it's big reveal, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will be brought to market in May and according to previous reports just <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/13/bmw-1-series-m-coupe-limited-to-just-2-700-units-in-three-colors/">2,700 examples will be produced</a> with the largest allocation coming to the U.S. If you plan on buying one, you won't have trouble choosing a color since there are just three options; Alpine White, Jet Black and Valencia Orange Metallic.<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/07/2008-international-engine-of-the-year-awards-announced/">award-winning BMW N54 inline-six</a> has been a hit around the world since it made its debut in the 2006 E90 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/3+series">335i</a>. The twin-turbocharged engine produces around 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and many have actually suggested that the Bavarian automaker's power figures have been conservative. When it came out, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> promised this engine would virtually eliminate turbo lag, increase performance and improve fuel economy at the same time. In fact, it was so confident in its new engine that it spread it around, adding it to its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/1+series">1</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/3+series">3</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series">5 Series</a> cars, along with its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/z4">Z4 sports cars</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/x6">X6 crossovers</a>.<br />

Unfortunately, the N54 has also seen its fair share of owner complaints. Most notably, unhappy BMW drivers allege having two very important issues with the w&uuml;ndermill; the high-pressure fuel pump has a very high failure rate and a defect in the design of the turbochargers requires they be tweaked so as not to run at full capacity. Many BMW owners have officially had it with the N54 engine and a class-action lawsuit has kicked into gear.<br />
