VIDEO: Fabulous footage of fabric-covered BMW GINA Light Visionary Model

The fabric-covered concept with its winking headlights, blinking gauges, mouth-like hood, and unique ability to shape shift by moving its metal-and-carbon-fiber skeleton via electro-hydraulic actuators is marvelously creative and practically ingenious at the same time. We around the Autoblog offices had a big discussion about the car after it was revealed and were amazed with the out-of-the-box ideas BMW is exploring, though some were doubtful that a fabric skin could ever be used for an actual production vehicle. While it was fun perusing the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/">dozens and dozens of images</a> that BMW handed out showing the GINA in various states of fold, the video above shows you exactly what the concept can do. Keep your eyes peeled for the headlight wink, disappearing gauges, pop-up head rests, a magic spoiler and much more. We reiterate, this thing is about as cool as concepts get. <em>Thanks for the tip, Joe!</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/">BMW GINA Light Visionary Model</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853214/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045513_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853215/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045514_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853216/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045515_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853217/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045516_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853218/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045517_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/12/video-fabulous-footage-of-fabric-covered-bmw-gina-light-visiona/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1224065/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/12/video-fabulous-footage-of-fabric-covered-bmw-gina-light-visiona/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

BMW spending another billion in the U.S. to expand

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/euro/" rel="tag">Euro</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/plants-manufacturing/" rel="tag">Plants/Manufacturing</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20080613/ANE02/744298945/1197/emaildailyANE02"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/1448096196_aa96552650_o_o pt.jpg" /></a><br />
<p> </p>
<p>Heavy fluctuations in the value of the U.S. dollar versus the Euro has made building vehicles in the U.S. a very attractive proposition for European automakers. BMW is looking to expand its U.S. operations by spending over $1B to increase capacity at its South Carolina plant, add more parts distribution centers, and expand its U.S. headquarters in New Jersey. The majority of the money, about $750M, will be spent on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/10/bmw-to-increase-u-s-production-in-2012-while-cutting-jobs-in-ge/">increasing production</a> at its plant South Carolina plant from 160,000 units to 240,000 by 2012. The move makes abundant sense given the fact that the German automaker is taking a massive hit by shipping vehicles from higher cost Europe to the lower cost U.S. </p>
<p>BMW is spending $100M on expanding its headquarters and another $170M to increase parts distribution centers, which should be welcome news for BMW owners who can face high wait times for parts. BMW has been tearing up the sales charts in the U.S. for quite a while, and with an added $1B getting spent on facilities Stateside, it looks like the Germans want the good times to continue to roll.</p>

Spy Shots: 2010 BMW 5 series gets new nostrils

Caught testing on the 'Ring recently, the next-gen 5 series is sporting a new grille with nostrils large enough to drive a 1 series through. Seemingly inspired by the mondo nose of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/19/shanghai-showstopper-bmw-cs-concept/">BMW CS concept</a>, the new 5 series will also apparently sport a smoother overall shape that gets us back to BMW sedans of the past. We dig it, at least in prototype form. Check out more angles in our high-res gallery of spy shots below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-5-series-spy-shots/">2010 BMW 5 series - spy shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-5-series-spy-shots/869309/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/bmw.5gt1.kgp.ed_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-5-series-spy-shots/869308/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/bmw.5gt2.kgp.ed_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-5-series-spy-shots/869307/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/bmw.5gt3.kgp.ed_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-5-series-spy-shots/869306/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/bmw.5gt4.kgp.ed_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: KGP Photography]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/18/spy-shots-2010-bmw-5-series-gets-new-nostrils/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1229202/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/18/spy-shots-2010-bmw-5-series-gets-new-nostrils/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

BMW M division celebrates 30 years and 300,000 vehicles

Since then 300,000 vehicles have been graced with that coveted "M" telltale, and still countless others have had the logo applied in the hopes the letter would add some magic to a plebian 318 or 528. Fully one percent of BMWs sold in 2007 were M models, and the milestone 300,000th car, an alpine white M3 Coupe, will live with its owner in the town of its birth, the East Bavarian hamlet of Regensburg. The M3 is likely the most legendary M car, with the original E30 version also existing for homologation purposes and morphing into the current V8-powered technical tour de force that can now be had in Coupe, Sedan or Convertible guise - a true triple threat. There appears no end in sight for BMW's M division's masterful application of the art and science of high performance engineering. Now, if BMW would just return our calls, we can permanently add the 300,001st M-model to the Autoblog Garage, though we're certain it's already built and sold. <em>Press release after the jump.</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-bmw-m3/">2008 BMW M3</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-bmw-m3/206107/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/2008_bmw-m3coupe_hi001_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-bmw-m3/206108/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/2008_bmw-m3coupe_hi002_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-bmw-m3/206109/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/2008_bmw-m3coupe_hi003_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-bmw-m3/206110/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/2008_bmw-m3coupe_hi004_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2008-bmw-m3/206111/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/04/2008_bmw-m3coupe_hi005_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/bmw-m-division-celebrates-30-years-and-300-000-vehicles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BMW M division celebrates 30 years and 300,000 vehicles</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/bmw-m-division-celebrates-30-years-and-300-000-vehicles/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1229521/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/bmw-m-division-celebrates-30-years-and-300-000-vehicles/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />
