The BMW M8 that never was...

Unlike Mercedes-Benz which produces AMG badged versions of just about every model in its lineup, BMW has maintained greater exclusivity with the M badge. Until last year's launch of the X6 M and X5 M, there have only been four M models (not counting the M1), but one M got as far as prototyping and testing, but never produced: The M8.

Powered by a 550 horsepower version of BMW's original M70 V12 engine, the M8 was meant to challenge the Ferrari 456 GT. However, following testing of the single prototype, BMW canceled the program and built the 375 hp 850CSi instead. The M8 prototype was long thought to have been crushed, but it turns out that it was stashed away in a corner and turned up in the BMW museum in Munich. Check out the BMW Blog for more shots.
BMW details K 1600 GT and GTL, introduces headlight that peeks around corners

Filed under: Performance, BMW, Motorcycle, Luxury

<sma ll>BMW K 1600 sketch - Click above for high-res image gallery

Late last year at the EICMA Show in Milan, BMW showed off a unique concept motorcycle powered by a six cylinder engine. At the time, the German company indicated that we could expect to see a production machine using a similar straight-six powerplant. Today, BMW has finally released a bunch of information on two upcoming production machines, which will be known as the K 1600 GT and GTL.

First and foremost, it's the engine that most intrigues us about this luxury touring motorcycle. According to BMW, its 1649cc mill pushes out 160 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 129 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. Torque lovers needn't be worried that the engine is too high strung either, with 70 percent of maximum twist available at just 1,500 revs. The big chunk of metal nestled within the K 1600's frame rails will weigh 226 pounds and will be 22 inches across.

All kinds of electronics goodies will be available, as you would expect, including ride-by-wire throttle control with three modes: Rain, Road and Dynamic. There will also be traction control and ABS brakes, along with BMW's impressive ESA II electronically adjustable suspension. Perhaps the coolest bit of tech, though, is the headlight. Allow us to explain.

BMW has created a new headlight that can actually level itself, regardless of how much load is on the bike (rider, passenger, luggage). This is a first in the motorcycle marketplace. There is also an optional system that can follow the road ahead, even when the bike is leaned over heavily in the corners.

As mentioned before, two models will be available sporting this powerplant and chassis. The first is the GT, which is a kind of heavyweight sport touring bike that comes with panniers but no top box. Think of the larger, more fully equipped GTL as a Honda Goldwing competitor, as it will feature supersized seating surfaces, a more relaxed riding position and a full set of luggage.

No official on-sale date has been announced, and neither has a price. That said, we expect the K 1600 to hit the market as a 2011 model for a price that will surely be over $20,000. See more details in the press release after the break.

2011 BMW 550i xDrive debuts along with M-Sport package

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, BMW, Diesel, Luxury

Heading into the 2011 model year, BMW is adding even more powertrain variants across its lineup. The most likely candidate for the U.S. market is the 550i xDrive sedan. The 407 horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 can send its 400 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels with the rears getting 60 percent of the grunt. The front-to-rear balance can be adjusted on the fly based on traction conditions, and if the car is cornering, more torque is sent to the back freeing up the fronts for steering force.

In Europe, at least, BMW is also bringing back the 535d, but instead of the previous twin-turbo setup (which is still used in the U.S.) it has a single twin-scroll turbocharger. Output for the top diesel is now up to 300 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque from just 1,750 rpm. Acceleration to 62 mph takes just 5.7 seconds with combined mileage on the EU driving cycle being rated at 38.6 miles per gallon. We already got an early look at the new M Sport package yesterday which gives the 5 Series a slightly toned down M5 appearance.

xDrive is now available on several more 5 Series Gran Turismo and 7 Series sedan variants including the diesel powered 740d. A new Design Pure Impulse package for the Z4 combines large quantities of Nappa leather and Alcantara with bright yellow paint and matching interior accents. Finally, the 204-hp X1 xDrive 23d can be ordered with a six-speed manual as an alternative to the automatic that was previously the sole gearbox choice.
Report: BMW Z4 and Mazda3 face NHTSA scrutiny over power steering failures

<sma ll>2009 BMW Z4 sDrive30i - Click above for high-res image gallery

Following all the criticism federal regulators received earlier this year for letting Toyota safety defects go unaddressed, everyone is taking a closer look customer complaints. The 2007-9 Mazda3 and the 2003-5 BMW Z4 are both being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration following consumer complaints about a loss of power steering assist. Three Mazda crashes and one BMW accident are being blamed on the steering issue.

Although the specific circumstances vary for each of the vehicles, in either case the loss of assist results in significantly increased effort to turn the steering wheel. The Mazda uses an electro-hydraulic assist system and Mazda issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) in 2009 related to this issue. Contamination in the pump can cause it slow down reducing the available assist. A TSB is sent out to dealers to correct an issue if a car comes in for service or a customer complains but fall short of a full recall. The Z4 has an electric power steering system that seems to have issues at higher speeds and temperatures.

BMW leaks first-gen X5 made of carbon fiber

Filed under: Concept Cars, SUV, Crossover, BMW

BMW has been making some headlines over the past few months with its commitment to carbon fiber construction, opening a joint-venture production facility in Washington State and teasing the upcoming Megacity EV as the first mass-produced carbon fiber vehicle. But there's always a back story to the headlines.

As you might have guessed, BMW has been toying around with the lightweight construction material for some time, seeing just how far it could push the envelop and what practical applications it could have. In this case, it turns out that, back around 2003, the Bavarian automaker re-constructed a first-gen X5 sport-ute with a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) unibody. Every panel on the X5 was replaced with CFRP, save the doors which retained their conventional steel construction. The result was a weight savings of 440 pounds, without - according to BMW - sacrificing structural rigidity and crash-worthiness.

Of course the carbon X5 was never put into production, but it reportedly underwent some 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) of testing, and the knowledge gleaned will surely find its way into BMW's production vehicles in the future.
