First Drive: 2011 BMW Alpina B7 breaks the luxo-barge mold

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><sma ll>2011 BMW Alpina B7 - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div> <br /> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Alpina/">Alpina</a> is as familiar to German enthusiasts as Shelby, Hurst, Saleen and Yenko are to American gearheads. And like its American counterparts, Alpina has made a business out of taking the best vehicles from one marque and making them substantially better than anything rolling off the assembly line.<br /> <br /> The relationship between <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> and Alpina started in 1962 when a German enthusiast named Burkard Bovenseipen realized his BMW 1500 had plenty of untapped potential. Bovenseipen developed a dual carburetor kit for the 1500's four-cylinder, and as the carbs flew off the shelves, he realized there was a serious market for BMW-based performance parts. Mr. B formed ALPINA Burkard Bovenseipen KG in 1964 and in the decades since, the company has become known simply as Alpina.<br /> <br /> But while the name has changed, its mission remains the same, and its line of upgrades have grown considerably since its inception. Bovenseipen's team continues to recognize the potential in almost every new BMW product, and the small but competent company, now managed by Bovenseipen's son Andreas (his staff calls him Andy), delivers better, less compromised, higher-performance versions of BMW production cars.<br /> <br /> In Europe, Alpina offers variants of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/3+series">3 Series</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series">5 Series</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/6+series">6 Series</a>, dubbed the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/09/geneva-motor-show-alpina-b3-brings-the-twist/">B3</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/17/alpina-teases-bmw-b5-bi-turbo-ahead-of-goodwood-debut/">B5</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/05/geneva-2009-bmw-alpina-b6-gt3-puts-the-ring-on-notice/">B6</a>, respectively. However, production constraints (and some concerns about M cannibalization, we're sure) prevents sales of these hotted-up Bimmers in the States. That's a crime, because the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/08/chicago-preview-bmw-brings-back-the-alpina-b7-for-2011/">Alpina B7</a> - the only Alpina available in the U.S. - is easily the best <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/7+series">7 Series</a> we've driven.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2011-bmw-alpina-b7/">First Drive: 2011 BMW Alpina B7</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2011-bmw-alpina-b7/#3127359"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/01alpinab7fd2011_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2011-bmw-alpina-b7/#3127360"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/02alpinab7fd2011_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2011-bmw-alpina-b7/#3127364"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/03alpinab7fd2011_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2011-bmw-alpina-b7/#3127366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/04alpinab7fd2011_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2011-bmw-alpina-b7/#3127367"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/05alpinab7fd2011_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Phot os by Rex Roy / Copyright (C)2010 Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/29/2011-bmw-alpina-b7-first-drive-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Drive: 2011 BMW Alpina B7 breaks the luxo-barge mold</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/29/2011-bmw-alpina-b7-first-drive-review/">First Drive: 2011 BMW Alpina B7 breaks the luxo-barge mold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 11:58:00 EST. Nowack tweaks BMW M5's V10 to 708 horsepower

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><sma ll>BMW M5 N635S 5.8 Hans Nowack Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div> <br /> With its award-winning V10, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>'s M division hasn't left us with much not to love. Save, of course, for the fact that it's not long for this world, pushed out as it will be in the next <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/m5">M5</a> by the company's growing environmental conscience. But before the twin-turbo V8 spells its demise, Nowack Motors is giving it a suitable farewell in the form of the N635S 5.8 Hans Nowack Edition.<br /> <br /> Having ruled out forced induction, the BMW tuning house has fitted the 5.0-liter V10 with a pair of new intake air collectors, a remapped ECU and retooled engine components. The result boosts the stock 507-horsepower motor up to a mind-boggling 708, dedicated by Oliver Nowack to his father Hans. The modifications are warrantied for a full year and can be retrofitted to any existing M5, and since the upgrades have been carried out principally on the engine itself, can also be fitted to its two-door counterpart, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/m6">M6</a>. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m5-n635s-5-8-hans-nowack-edition/">BMW M5 N635S 5.8 Hans Nowack Edition</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m5-n635s-5-8-hans-nowack-edition/#3131685"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/01-nowack-m5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m5-n635s-5-8-hans-nowack-edition/#3131695"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/07-nowack-m5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m5-n635s-5-8-hans-nowack-edition/#3131696"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/08-nowack-m5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m5-n635s-5-8-hans-nowack-edition/#3131694"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/06-nowack-m5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-m5-n635s-5-8-hans-nowack-edition/#3131687"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/02-nowack-m5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.nowack-motors.com/">Nowack Motors</a> via <a href="http://www.worldcarfans.com/110062927091/nowack-releases-bmw-m5-hans-nowack-edition">World Car Fans</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/30/nowack-tweaks-the-bmw-m5s-v10-to-708-horsepower/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nowack tweaks BMW M5's V10 to 708 horsepower</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/30/nowack-tweaks-the-bmw-m5s-v10-to-708-horsepower/">Nowack tweaks BMW M5's V10 to 708 horsepower</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 13:01:00 EST. Behold: BMW 5 Series M Sport Package revealed

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><sma ll>2011 BMW M Sport 5 Series - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div> <br /> We got an early peek at the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/21/leaked-2011-bmw-5-series-m-sport-package/">M-Sport aero program</a> for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series">BMW 5 Series</a> not too long ago via a handful of leaked brochure images. But shady pictures of renderings aren't quite the same as seeing the car in the flesh. Fortunately for everyone on the interwebs, the good folk over at the 5Post forum have managed to get their paws on what looks to be a trove of legitimate photos of the body kit on a 2011 5 Series. The shots show the new front bumper, complete with its aggressive new lower air inlets borrowed from the M-Sport program on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/3+series">3 Series</a>, side skirts and a glossy rear valance.<br /> <br /> The kit also throws in a tiny lip spoiler for the rear trunk lid and a more aggressive suspension setup for a slightly more sporty feel. The photos also confirm that the smaller, three-spoke M steering wheel will show up as well as a set of unique seats. Fancy. From what we can tell, buyers opting for the sport package will also be able to choose between two new wheel programs that include 18-inch and 19-inch options.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/">2011 BMW M-Sport 5 Series</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/#3133873"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/02-f10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/#3133872"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/01-f10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/#3133874"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/03-f10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/#3133875"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/04-f10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/#3133876"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/05-f10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=403526"> 5Post</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/01/behold-bmw-5-series-m-sport-package-revealed/">Behold: BMW 5 Series M Sport Package revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 10:28:00 EST. Report: BMW considers investing $1B in Mexican suppliers
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><img vspace="0" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/06/bmw-logo-engine.jpg" alt="" /><br />
<br /> <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> is looking to cut $4.9 billion in costs by 2012, but as always, it takes money to make money. <em>Automotive News</em> reports that the German automaker is looking at investing $1 billion in Mexican suppliers to lower costs. The move makes perfect sense considering BMW makes vehicles here in North America, and importing parts from Germany means the company has to pay far higher wages and freight charges. Mexico is also proving to be a viable alternative to production in China, where recent labor unrest has brought wages on the upswing.<br /> <br /> BMW isn't commenting on its plans for Mexico yet, but Mexican Economy Minister Gerardo Ruiz Mateos says the automaker wants to "increase the production of auto parts here in Mexico." Mateos is reportedly traveling to Germany to discuss moving parts production to Mexico. And while the Euro is currently its weakest in years, moving parts production to Mexico would also help BMW avoid $1 billion in currency risk, which has hurt German automakers in the past.<br /> <br /> [Source:<a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100630/OEM01/100639988/1193"> Automotive News</a> - Sub. BMW teases Megacity EV, first volume production vehicle with carbon fiber structure
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/tech/" rel="tag">Technology</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/design-style/" rel="tag">Design/Style</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/electric/" rel="tag">Electric</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/"><img vspace="4" hspace="0" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/07/p90063248-copy-2.jpg" /></a>
<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><sma ll>BMW Megacity Vehicle - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div> <br /> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> has released the first teaser images of its upcoming Megacity electric vehicle and also confirmed that not only will the body panels be formed from carbon fiber, but so will the structure. The Megacity will become the first high volume vehicle with this type of construction. Previously, carbon fiber structures have been limited to race cars and supercars like the McLaren F1 and the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/18/mclaren-automotive-officially-launches-itself-and-mp4-12c-superc/">MP4-12c</a>. <br /> <br /> BMW is taking advantage of the new flexibility afforded by the electric powertrain and batteries to totally repackage the Megacity and using the carbon fiber structure, it should be able to shed as much weight as possible. The Megacity will be powered by a motor with over 100 kilowatts, but its top speed will be limited to 93 miles-per-hour since the vehicle is designed mainly for urban use. Although the electric drive could push the Megacity to higher speeds, limiting the speed gives the engineers the ability to maximize efficiency and thus range. <br /> <br /> When we first drove the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/18/mclaren-automotive-officially-launches-itself-and-mp4-12c-superc/">Mini E</a> in late 2008, we noted that BMW had programmed in much more regenerative braking when the accelerator is released than other electric cars. BMW is planning to stick with this strategy to effectively turn the Megacity into a one pedal car so that most normal braking is done just with the accelerator and the brake pedal will only be for emergency use. The Megacity vehicle goes on sale in 2013.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/low/">BMW Megacity Vehicle</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/07/p90063249_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/07/p90063248_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/07/p90061198highres_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/07/p90061197highres_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-megacity-vehicle/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/07/p90061196highres_thumbnai l.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/02/bmw-teases-megacity-ev-first-volume-production-vehicle-with-car/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BMW teases Megacity EV, first volume production vehicle with carbon fiber structure</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/02/bmw-teases-megacity-ev-first-volume-production-vehicle-with-car/">BMW teases Megacity EV, first volume production vehicle with carbon fiber structure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Fri, 02 Jul 2010 09:39:00 EST.
