Unlike the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/27/modern-retro-bmw-m1-homage-officially-revealed/">BMW M1 Homage concept</a>, this one's actually a runner, as evidenced by the video posted below the fold, showing the concept being driven from the studio into a car carrier then unloaded at the BMW Museum in Munich.<br /><br />No details about the roadster are available from the <a href="http://bmw-web.tv/en/channel/new">BMW-web.tv</a> site, but judging by the open cockpit and massive width, we're expecting something akin the M1, sans roof and sporting many of the design cues found on the homage. Check back for more when the BMW GINA Light Visionary Concept is unveiled on June 10th.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teaser/">BMW GINA Light Visionary Concept teaser</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teaser/844117/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/01_bmw_vision_teaser_thum bnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teaser/844118/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/02_bmw_vision_teaser_thum bnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teaser/844122/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/03_bmw_vision_teaser_thum bnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teaser/844119/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/04_bmw_vision_teaser_thum bnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teaser/844123/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/05_bmw_vision_teaser_thum bnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/05/video-bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teased-ahead-of-june-10t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VIDEO: BMW GINA Light Visionary Concept teased ahead of June 10th unveiling</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://bmw-web.tv/en/channel/new>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/05/video-bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teased-ahead-of-june-10t/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1216959/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/05/video-bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teased-ahead-of-june-10t/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

Next BMW night vision system can detect humans in the dark

While the image above doesn't appear to have anything like the picture quality of Mercedes' NightVision Assist, BMW's offering will have some other features that you probably won't find this side of a special ops base. <br /><br />The second-gen night vision system will be able to detect humans in the road because it will use thermal imaging. It will alert the driver of human impediments up to 100 meters ahead, and it won't be confused by humans on the sidewalk. If a collision is imminent, a flashing warning triangle will appear on the screen and the heads-up display.<br /><br />European versions of the car won't have to rely on navigation software to know the speed limit of a given road. A camera behind the rear-view mirror will read street sings in any country that is signed to the Vienna Convention -- which doesn't include the U.S. That function will work in any weather, even fog. It won't limit the speed of the car, but it will warn the driver if his or her speed is excessive. Word is they are considering naming the system "Hal." <em>Thanks for the tip, Chris!</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/06/05/improved-night-vision-for-next-2009-bmw-7-series/">BMWblog</a>]<br /><br /><br />
<p>The camera found in the Night-Vision-system will be improved as well, featuring a better resolution and improved object-recognition. The system will warn the driver if he is in danger of a collision with any detected object or human. To test this technique they test drove over 250.000 kilometers at night, so the error margins are pretty slim. That's pretty impressive I would say.</p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href=http://www.bmwblog.com/2008/06/05/improved-night-vision-for-next-2009-bmw-7-series/>Read</a>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/06/next-bmw-night-vision-system-can-detect-humans-in-the-dark/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1217264/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/06/next-bmw-night-vision-system-can-detect-humans-in-the-dark/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

BMW GINA Light Visionary Model revealed

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/conceptcars/" rel="tag">Concept Cars</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/convertibles/" rel="tag">Convertibles</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853214/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045546_opt.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853214/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045600_opt.jpg" /></a>The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model that was seen <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/05/video-bmw-gina-light-visionary-concept-teased-ahead-of-june-10t/">via video</a> being installed in the BMW Museum in Munich last week has finally been revealed, and the futuristic design study shows how BMW designers are thinking outside of the box when it comes to the materials that make up a car and also how the car relates to the driver. GINA stands for "Geometry and Functions in 'N' Adaptations", which basically means that designers from both BMW and BMW Group DesignworksUSA were allowed to throw out the rulebook. This is most evident in the GINA Light Visionary Model's outer skin, which is made entirely out of textile fabric that's pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wires. The skeleton of the car is controlled by electro-hydraulic devices and can actually move and change shape beneath the fabric skin. For instance, the headlights of the concept can be <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853216/">exposed or hidden by the car's skin</a> just like blinking eyes, and the hood <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853229/">opens from the center</a> as the fabric parts to expose the engine. This idea extends to the interior, where BMW designers have made visible only those instruments that are required at a certain time, while the rest of the time the same fabric interior "blinks" them out of view. The car itself looks somewhat like a Z4 Roadster, though after viewing the extensive gallery of high-res images below, you'll be amazed how much the outer skin looks like normal sheetmetal. Until, that is, you see how the doors open. They lift up in a semi-scissor fashion and since there are no exposed hinges, the fabric artfully binds up as the door swings open. While the design of the GINA Light Visionary Model is very Bangle-esque with concave and convex surfaces intermingling everywhere you look, it looks appropriate and natural here. The car is very much a concept, meant more to inspire BMW's own designers and engineers rather than excite the public, but now we're excited about shape-changin, fabric-covered cars, anyway.<br /><br /><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <em>In addition to the 84 images in our high-res gallery, we've also added a video of the GINA Light Visionary Model produced by BMW after the jump. We highly recommend watching it to understand how unique this concept is. </em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/">BMW GINA Light Visionary Model</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853214/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045513_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853215/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045514_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853216/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045515_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853217/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045516_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853218/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045517_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/10/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BMW GINA Light Visionary Model revealed</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/10/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-revealed/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1220957/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/10/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-revealed/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

G-Power builds twin-supercharged M6 Hurricane drop-top

<p><em>Click above for high-res gallery of the G-Power M6 Hurricane</em></p>
<p>We were highly impressed with G-Power's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/03/g-power-claims-mantle-as-fastest-bmw-with-730hp-hurricane-m5/">M5 Hurricane</a>. After all, it's twin-supercharged V10 produced nearly 50% more power than stock and it had a top speed of 211 mph, which G-Power claims to be faster than any other street legal Bimmer. With the BMW M6 packing the same 5.0-liter V10, it was only a matter of time before it received the same treatment. Behold the G-Power M6 Hurricane! While the twin blowers are set for lower boost, only 6 psi compared to the M5's 10 psi, the M6 still produces a healthy 635 bhp @ 7300 rpm and 469 lb-ft torque @ 6300 rpm. This is good for a 4.5 second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed of nearly 200 mph. Not one to forget that appearance matters, G-Power also provides a new front and rear fascia, rocker panels, and carbon fiber rear diffuser along with 21-inch wheels that make room for a 15-inch brake system up front. M6 owners can drop off their car at G-Power's German headquarters or can order a fully assembled car starting at a <em>mere</em> 183,000 Euros. Full details can be found in the press release after the jump.</p>

The fabric-covered concept with its winking headlights, blinking gauges, mouth-like hood, and unique ability to shape shift by moving its metal-and-carbon-fiber skeleton via electro-hydraulic actuators is marvelously creative and practically ingenious at the same time. We around the Autoblog offices had a big discussion about the car after it was revealed and were amazed with the out-of-the-box ideas BMW is exploring, though some were doubtful that a fabric skin could ever be used for an actual production vehicle. While it was fun perusing the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/">dozens and dozens of images</a> that BMW handed out showing the GINA in various states of fold, the video above shows you exactly what the concept can do. Keep your eyes peeled for the headlight wink, disappearing gauges, pop-up head rests, a magic spoiler and much more. We reiterate, this thing is about as cool as concepts get. <em>Thanks for the tip, Joe!</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/">BMW GINA Light Visionary Model</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853214/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045513_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853215/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045514_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853216/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045515_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853217/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045516_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-gina-light-visionary-model-1/853218/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/p0045517_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/12/video-fabulous-footage-of-fabric-covered-bmw-gina-light-visiona/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1224065/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/12/video-fabulous-footage-of-fabric-covered-bmw-gina-light-visiona/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

BMW spending another billion in the U.S. to expand

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/euro/" rel="tag">Euro</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/plants-manufacturing/" rel="tag">Plants/Manufacturing</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20080613/ANE02/744298945/1197/emaildailyANE02"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/1448096196_aa96552650_o_o pt.jpg" /></a><br />
<p> </p>
<p>Heavy fluctuations in the value of the U.S. dollar versus the Euro has made building vehicles in the U.S. a very attractive proposition for European automakers. BMW is looking to expand its U.S. operations by spending over $1B to increase capacity at its South Carolina plant, add more parts distribution centers, and expand its U.S. headquarters in New Jersey. The majority of the money, about $750M, will be spent on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/10/bmw-to-increase-u-s-production-in-2012-while-cutting-jobs-in-ge/">increasing production</a> at its plant South Carolina plant from 160,000 units to 240,000 by 2012. The move makes abundant sense given the fact that the German automaker is taking a massive hit by shipping vehicles from higher cost Europe to the lower cost U.S. </p>
<p>BMW is spending $100M on expanding its headquarters and another $170M to increase parts distribution centers, which should be welcome news for BMW owners who can face high wait times for parts. BMW has been tearing up the sales charts in the U.S. for quite a while, and with an added $1B getting spent on facilities Stateside, it looks like the Germans want the good times to continue to roll.</p>

What he saw were the next BMW Z4 and 7 series sedan heavily covered in camouflage, but not so much that we can't make out their general shapes and few new styling cues. Feast away at the pics in the gallery below and remember, always have a camera with you as prototypes are popping up all over these days.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-z4-and-7-series-spy-shots/">BMW Z4 and 7 series - spy shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-z4-and-7-series-spy-shots/865080/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/000_bmwspypics_thumbnail. jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-z4-and-7-series-spy-shots/865072/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/001_bmwspypics_thumbnail. jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-z4-and-7-series-spy-shots/865070/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/002_bmwspypics_thumbnail. jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-z4-and-7-series-spy-shots/865078/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/003_bmwspypics_thumbnail. jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-z4-and-7-series-spy-shots/865079/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/004_bmwspypics_thumbnail. jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/16/spy-shots-next-bmw-z4-and-7-series-caught-on-pch/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1227007/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/16/spy-shots-next-bmw-z4-and-7-series-caught-on-pch/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />
