Keeping up with the House of Saud: BMW 7 Series High Security

<sma ll>BMW 760Li High Security -- click image above for high-res gallery

You're totally rich, your name's on several buildings and your wife is hotter than three suns. And you love sporty driving -- no chauffeur for you. Thing is, people are always shooting at your Ferrari 599. True, it can outrun bullets -- but what if you're stopped at a light? BMW has a solution for you. Meet the 760Li High Security and its "little" brother, the 750Li High Security, two new flagships providing safe haven from attacks and an entertaining steer. And they're fast. The 750Li has the now ubiquitous 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 good for 407 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Even better, is the mighty heart of the 760Li with its soon-to-be shared with Rolls-Royce 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 that not only makes 537 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That much grunt lets the big dog hit 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. Both cars are electronically limited to 131 mph.

But here's why you really want 'em. Unlike cars that get all up-armored in the aftermarket, the new 7-Series was designed from the very start with armored versions in mind. Meaning that when the lads at the Dingofling factory add a few thousand pounds of bullet-proof steel plating, BMW has already designed a suitable suspension component (be it dampers, bushings or strut top mounting points) to account for all the extra weight. Moreover, as the new factory panels are in fact a perfect match to the parts they're replacing, the High Security cars fit together better and are more tightly sealed -- good news in case of gas attacks. And speaking of gas attacks, there's an assault alarm that automatically puts out fires under the car and in the engine bay. The assault alarm can also detect excess gas levels and automatically shut the vents, raise the windows, locks the doors and pump in purified air. Gotta have that.

BMW's claiming that both cars meet VR7 levels of protection and that the non-see-through bits meet VR9 levels. Sadly, even the internet doesn't know exactly what those levels mean, but they sound safe. In fact, (taking BMW's word for it) the only safer place on four wheels is Obama's Cadillac One, and even you can't buy that. Says BMW, "The two BMW high security sedans set new standards in the protection of persons at risk while traveling in their vehicle." Still not feeling safe? There's an optional compartment to store two machine guns right in the center console. Plus we're sure some "discreet" BMW consultants could help you and your check book make the 7-Series High Security a whole lot safer. Full press release after the jump.
Lazareth creates a 500-horsepower E85-powered quad (w/VIDEO)
French automobile and motorcycle builder Lazareth has managed to shoehorn an entire BMW V12 engine into one of its crazy Wazuma quads. While there isn't much that's environmentally friendly about a 500-horsepower supercharged V12 from BMW that's powering a rather large and impractical quad platform, Lazareth has decided to attempt to give the machine a bit of eco-cred by running the engine on E85.

Why use ethanol in a decidedly performance-minded machine? We'd guess Lazareth's decision to run E85 as a fuel is due to its superior octane rating, which allows the engine to run a higher compression ratio than with gasoline. If you're interested in adding an ethanol-burning, V12-powered road rocket to your own personal stable of vehicles, all you need to do is write Lazareth a check for €200,000 ($283,000) and await your delivery. Click past the break for a video of the Wazuma Bio V12 in action.
eBay Find of the Day: BMW 3.0 CS/CSL Group 2 Racing Coupe

<sma ll>BMW 3.0 CS/CSL Group 2 Racing Coupe - click above image for gallery

So how'd you like to get your hands on this? First, a little explanation of what this is. You are looking at (and hopefully bidding on) a car that began life in 1968 as a 1969 BMW 2800 CS where it served for five-months as a BMW test car. It then spent close to 40-years kicking around various race circuits. Notable stops include 1977 when it was painted lime green and raced in Group 2 competition, after which someone painted our hero orange.

There it sat, all dressed up until the seller went to Sweden in 2006 and discovered the Bimmer in cold storage. He then performed a "rotisserie restoration" taking the car back to its original factory Alpine White. The seller even got this 3.0 CS together in time to race at the 2007 Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. In fact, the car -- which is now fitted with a 3.5-liter six, Weber carbs, a CR5 Getrag and adjustable coilovers -- is still active and entered in the 2009 Coronado Speed Festival this September. Meaning that if you're the winning bidder, you get to go race! One teeny piece of bad news -- the opening bid of $75,000 didn't quite meet the reserve. Happy bidding!

BMW X6 Hybrid to be world's most powerful gas-electric vehicle

Filed under: Frankfurt Auto Show, Hybrid, Sedan, Crossover, BMW

<sma ll>BMW X6 ActiveHybrid Concept - Click above for a high-res image gallery

"High performance hybrid" - an oxymoron? Not according to BMW, which has two new hybrids coming to the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. One of the two, the X6 Hybrid, promises to be the most powerful hybrid vehicle ever offered with 478 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque from its twin electric motors and 4.4-liter V8 engine combined.

According to what appear to be leaked specs from BMW, the X6 Hybrid will scoot to 60 in about 5.5 seconds while returning a 20-percent fuel mileage improvement over the standard X6 with its twin-turbo V8. To set the hybrid apart from its standard sibling, BMW will bestow the new fuel-saver with a power dome hood (musclecar elements on a hybrid - HA!) and a bespoke metallic blue hue.

Faster yet will be the upcoming 7 Series Hybrid, which will reportedly be able to cover the run to 60 in under five seconds flat via the 459 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque provided by its V8-based hybrid powertrain combination. BMW predicts an X6 Hybrid-matching 20-percent increase in fuel efficiency from its 7 Series Hybrid.
The embargo dam began cracking earlier today with the premature release of the X6 ActiveHybrid's details, so BMW decided to open the floodgates and reveal all its Frankfurt-bound hybrids ahead of the show, beginning with the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid 7.

The big sedan uses a different electric drive setup from the coupe-shaped 'ute: a mild hybrid co-developed with Mercedes-Benz that combined with an electric motor and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, yields 455 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The V8 has been upgraded from the standard 400 to 440 hp (with the extra 15 hp coming from the electric motor), and unlike the two-mode hybrid system in the X6, this mild hybrid has the single motor sandwiched between the engine and the new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Another difference from the X6 is the use of a 120V lithium ion battery pack rather the nickel metal hydride unit in the crossover. The hybrid drive should bump the fuel efficiency by about 15 percent overall, putting it at about 19-20 mpg combined while getting to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds. The ActiveHybrid will be available in both standard and extra-long variants, and the production version of the ActiveHybrid 7 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, with sales beginning later this year. Full press release below the fold.
