CES 2008: Hands on with heat-sensing FLIR-equipped BMW

<div align="center"><strong><e m><small>Click above to view a high-res gallery of photos from FLIR's CES 2009 demo.</small></em></strong><br /></div> <br />Just like we thought, FLIR wasn't on board with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/04/ces-2009-preview-flir-helps-bmws-detect-pedestrians/ ">our plan</a> to drive their <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/04/ces-2009-preview-flir-helps-bmws-detect-pedestrians/">night-vision BMW</a> through the Nevada dessert, but we did get to check out the car's in-dash display.<br /><br />Our demo was indoors only, though we still got a good idea of how it works. Showgoers passing in front of the BMW's heat-sensing camera appeared in nice detail despite the relatively small difference in their temperature and their surroundings. FLIR rep Jay James said the camera can detect a .05 degree difference in temperatures, which translates into many more shades of gray on the monitor. <br /><br />The system is tuned to look several yards down the road and so was thrown off by the number of pedestrians within inches of its bumper. But whenever someone walked through its danger zone, the system's display indicated a pedestrian by outliing that person with a yellow rectangle.<br /><br />The demo BMW had been retrofitted with the system, but new BMWs with the factory-installed version flash a yellow triangle in the head-up display to alert drivers to take action. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/">CES 2009: FLIR demos BMW Pedestrian Detection</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/1271017/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/1271020/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/1271021/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/1271018/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ces-2009-flir-demos-bmw-pedestrian-detection/1271019/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/flir_ces2009_cjt---5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Liv e Photos Copyright (C)2009 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/09/ces-2008-hands-on-with-flir-equipped-bmw/">CES 2008: Hands on with heat-sensing FLIR-equipped BMW</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 11:18:00 EST. Spy Shots: Early BMW 3-Series mule spotted testing
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/spyphotos/" rel="tag">Spy Photos</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/" rel="tag">Sedans/Saloons</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><em><a href="http://globalmotors.net/spy-shots-next-generation-bmw-3-series-test-mule/"><img width="250" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="149" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/3-series-small.jpg" /></a></em>Global Motors just posted some spy pics of what is believed to be a next-generation BMW 3-Series mule. The taped up rear and chunky fender flares distinguish it from a stock 3. <br /><br />If you're scratching your head thinking we just got a new 3-Series from the Bavarians, you're right. The E90 debuted in 2006 and just received a freshening for '09, so we don't expect anything to come of this project until 2011 at the earliest (which goes some way toward explaining why there's no new production bodywork in evidence). <em>Click over to Global Motors for more visuals of the mule in all its fender-flared glory. Thanks for the tip, Andrus!</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://globalmotors.net/spy-shots-next-generation-bmw-3-series-test-mule/">Global Motors</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/09/spy-shots-early-bmw-3-series-mule-spotted-testing/">Spy Shots: Early BMW 3-Series mule spotted testing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 17:59:00 EST. Detroit 2009: BMW pulls the cover off the new Z4

<div align="center"><em><stron g><small>Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2010 BMW Z4</small></strong></em><br /></div> <br />BMW had a Cirque du Soleil wannabe hanging upside down from a curtain to pull the sheets off of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/officially-official-2010-bmw-z4/">2010 BMW Z4</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/DetroitAutoShow/">Detroit Auto Show</a>. The Z4 is the third generation of BMW's small roadster since the original Z3 debuted in the mid-90s. This time around, the company is moving production from South Carolina to Europe to make room for the next gen X3 at Spartanburg. The new Z4 gets a retractable hardtop in place of the soft top, and with only two seats to cover, the proportions don't look as goofy as other hard top convertibles.<br /><br />The flame surfacing of the last Z4 has been dramatically toned from the last generation, giving a much cleaner look overall. Under the hood, US versions of the Z4 are restricted to 3.0L six cylinder engines with and without turbochargers. No word yet on an M version, but given recent statements from BMW it seems more likely to get a more highly boosted version of the six rather than the M3's V8. The Z4 goes on sale this summer. Expect pricing to be released closer to the sale date.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-bmw-z4/">Detroit 2009: BMW Z4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-bmw-z4/1279126/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/bmwz4naias09_01_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-bmw-z4/1279127/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/bmwz4naias09_02_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-bmw-z4/1279128/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/bmwz4naias09_03_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-bmw-z4/1279129/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/bmwz4naias09_04_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-bmw-z4/1279130/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/bmwz4naias09_05_thumbnail .jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/">2010 BMW Z4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222098/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_09_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222120/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_10_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222143/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_11_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222109/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_14_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-bmw-z4-1/1222104/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/2010_z4_hi_15_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/11/detroit-2009-bmw-pulls-the-cover-off-the-new-z4/">Detroit 2009: BMW pulls the cover off the new Z4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 14:05:00 EST. Spy Shots: Is BMW working on an M7?
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/spyphotos/" rel="tag">Spy Photos</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/" rel="tag">Sedans/Saloons</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="motortips.blogspot. com/2009/01/exclusive-first-shots-of-uncovered-bmw.html"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/m7spy.jpg" alt="" /></a>Don't get us wrong; we've got no beef with enormously powerful luxury vehicles. In fact, we love 'em. But while Mercedes' AMG division has shoehorned their bestial power plants into all manner of vehicles big and small, BMW's Motorsport division has always drawn a line in the Bavarian sand. They'd tune the 3 Series and the 5 Series along with a handful of coupes and convertibles, but that's where it ended. But that line seems to be eroding, as spy shots of what could be an M7 sedan have been snapped soon after the news of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/22/video-bmw-drives-the-x5-m/">M-tuned X5</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/05/video-bmw-gives-sneak-preview-of-new-x6-m/">X6</a> crossovers.<br /><br />It's hard to tell from the shots exactly what we're looking at, but it appears to be a sportified version of the latest-generation 7 Series (codename F01), complete with quad exhaust tips and lightweight painted wheels. Of course, it could be a tuner special, a simple <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/27/bmw-to-start-offering-m-sport-packs-in-the-u-s-look-faster-wit/">M-Sport appearance package</a> or an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/22/alpina-teases-with-sketch-of-next-b7-sedan/">Alpina version</a>, but then why would the BMW badges be covered? If it is an M7, it would be a first for BMW, and could, according to speculation, derive its power from a twin-turbo V12 with over 600 horsepower. Coupled with some weight reduction, the BMW M7 could give the the Mercedes S63 AMG and Audi S8 a run for their money, of which there is plenty at stake in this stratospheric sub-segment. And as with the reported emergence of an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/25/bmw-to-offer-7-series-with-xdrive-awd-in-late-2009/">xDrive 7 Series</a>, the Bavarians might be growing tired of seeing their customers leave town for Stuttgart or Ingolstadt. <em>Props to RJ for the tip!</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://motortips.blogspot.com/2009/01/exclusive-first-shots-of-uncovered-bmw.html ">MotorTips</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/13/spy-shots-is-bmw-working-on-an-m7/">Spy Shots: Is BMW working on an M7?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 08:27:00 EST. Rendering Homage: Racer X Design BMW RZ-M6

<div style="text-align: center;"><small><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Click above to view the Racer X Design BMW RZ-M6 in high resolution</span></small><br /></div> <br />When BMW rolled out the new 6 Series coupe in 2003, it reconnected with a nameplate that had laid dormant for some 14 years. The original 6-Series, produced between 1976 and 1989, earned itself a cult following and iconic status, epitomized by the 635CSi. Some apparently feel that the current 6 doesn't pay enough homage to the original. The people at Racer X Design count themselves in that camp, and are evidently hoping there are more like-minded enthusiasts... with cash.<br /><br />Racer X Design has caught our attention before with some arresting concepts, including the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/11/17/racer-x-design-kc-427-concept-offers-modern-interpretation-of-th/">KC-427</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/10/rendered-speculation-racer-x-design-rz-formula/">RZ Formula</a>. The RZ-M6, however, takes the existing 6 Series and retros it up a bit, in turn paying a bit of homage to BMW's own <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/27/modern-retro-bmw-m1-homage-officially-revealed/">M1 Hommage concept</a>. The modified body panels would also widen the coupe by an extra 50 mm, giving it a more aggressive stance to go along with the tribute styling. Of course, Racer X Design needs to attract some potential customers to bring the RZ-M6 to life, but it's already a few steps closer to reality than the studio's previous projects. Check it out in the gallery below and read the full press release after the jump.<em><br /><br /></em><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/">Racer X Design BMW RZ-M6</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/1293923/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009-bmw-rz-m6-by-racer-x-design-side-race-1280x960_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/1293922/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009-bmw-rz-m6-by-racer-x-design-rear-race-1280x960_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/1293921/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009-bmw-rz-m6-by-racer-x-design-rear-and-side-1280x960_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/1293920/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009-bmw-rz-m6-by-racer-x-design-rear-1600x1200_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/1293919/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009-bmw-rz-m6-by-racer-x-design-front-race-1280x960_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.racerxdesign.com">Rac er X Design</a> via <a href="http:// http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/2009/top-2009-BMW-RZ-M6-by-Racer-X-Design.htm">SeriousWheels .com</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/15/rendering-homage-racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rendering Homage: Racer X Design BMW RZ-M6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/15/rendering-homage-racer-x-design-bmw-rz-m6/">Rendering Homage: Racer X Design BMW RZ-M6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 11:29:00 EST. How not to do a burnout in your BMW
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/videos/" rel="tag">Videos</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><img hspace="4" vspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/bimmer-upside-down.jpg" alt="" /><br /><br />We're not exactly sure why burnouts are fun to watch, but boy are they ever. In the hands of an expert, the smell of the burning tires and the roar of the engine are a thing of beauty. For the amateur, burning prolonged rubber can lead to more than some ruined radials. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/17/how-i-not-i-to-do-a-burnout-in-your-bmw/">Hit the jump</a> to view one of the saddest burnouts we've ever seen. For some reason, the man behind the wheel of this BMW thought it would be a good idea to lay rubber on a cement embankment. The resulting video ought to be enough to make sure an insurance claim isn't approved. We're just happy nobody appeared to be hurt; as this one could have ended even more badly.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/80504403/">eBaum's World</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/18/how-i-not-i-to-do-a-burnout-in-your-bmw/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>How <i>not</i> to do a burnout in your BMW </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/18/how-i-not-i-to-do-a-burnout-in-your-bmw/">How <i>not</i> to do a burnout in your BMW </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Sun, 18 Jan 2009 16:06:00 EST.
