Spy Shots: BMW 5 Series Hybrid spotted whirring about

It hardly seems worthy of <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>'s distinctively swirly camouflage - after all, we pretty much know exactly what it will look like after seeing the latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series">5 Series</a> several times and even gazing at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/02/geneva-2010-bmw-5-series-activehybrid-concept/">ActiveHybrid Concept</a> from the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/GenevaMotorShow/">Geneva Motor Show</a> - but here we are with an image gallery of the 2012 5 Series Hybrid. 
 
Assuming that the production car will get a similar drivetrain to what was shown off in the aforementioned concept, we can expect to see a turbocharged inline six-cylinder mated up to an eight-speed automatic transmission with a 40-kilowatt electric motor sandwiched between. 
 
We can't say for certain what kind of fuel mileage this combination would provide (best guess would be about a 20-percent improvement), but we do know that a lithium ion battery pack should be nestled right near the rear axle for optimum weight distribution. That pack not only allows the car to operate on electric power, it also provides short bursts of added performance when called upon. Check out the high-res image gallery of spy shots below.

Review: 2010 BMW 550i Gran Turismo is the Ultimate Passenger Machine

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw/">BMW</a> recently launched a new marketing campaign titled "BMW is Joy." The new tag line is explained as, "Part of a big-media strategy the company is doing to raise its profile worldwide with a more emotional, optimistic voice." Raising a company's profile is never a bad thing, however, we question if anything is more high-minded than "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/19/lutz-resume-includes-reviving-bmw-with-ultimate-driving-machin/">The Ultimate Driving Machine</a>," one of the very best auto-related taglines ever concocted. BMW says it isn't moving away from its TUDM slogan, but we can't help but wonder, is BMW is trying to tell us something? What if instead of appealing to those who actually might value the ultimate driving machine, they're looking instead for other customers?
Our man Paukert sampled the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series+gt">535i Gran Turismo</a> last September and came away impressed by the combination of packaging and driving dynamics offered up by BMW's curious new kinda-wagon. The party piece of the cynically-named Gran Turismo is a slick, trick two-way tailgate that opens either as a tiny trunk or as a cavernous hatch. Or maybe it's not such a stretch, name-wise. After all, translated the moniker simply means "grand touring," and after a hard day of driving, being able to easily unload your luggage and get checked into your hotel is its own kind of luxury. Is it possible that the even more potent BMW 550i Gran Turismo is an even better proposition than its slightly weaker sibling? What about compared to a <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/bmw+5+series">5 Series Wagon</a> or even an <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/bmw+x5">X5</a>? And what about competition from other brands? Given its unconventional form and unique packaging, is there any competition to speak of? More importantly, is it joyful, the ultimate driving anything or a bird of an entirely different feather?

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/m5">2011 BMW M5</a> has been caught on video doing its thing around the 'Ring, and by "doing its thing" we really mean shredding the life out of the rear tires. Judging from the quick video, the massive sedan seems to have no problem hustling through the banked curves of every automaker's favorite test track. 
 
BMW has kept its lips sealed when it comes to what exactly is under the hood of the next-generation <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/20/spy-shots-2011-bmw-m5-strips-away-more-of-its-camo/">M5</a> or when the lowly public will be able to get their greedy paws on the finished product. Rumor has it the German automaker has ditched the big, naturally-aspirated V10 we all know and love in favor of the same twin-turbocharged V8 found at the heart of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/x5+m">X5 M</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/x6+m">X6 M</a>. If true, that means the car is packing somewhere around 578 horsepower in its arsenal.

Report: BMW X4 back on the table?

Were you, like us, just thinking that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/bmw">BMW</a>'s U.S. lineup would be fully complete if only it had just one more <strike>crossover utility </strike>Sports Activity Vehicle that slotted in somewhere between the small <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/x3">X3</a> and midsize <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/x5">X5</a>? If so, we have good news. Just such a vehicle - logically and tentatively named the X4 - is rumored to be in development. Again. 
 
Just as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/x6">X6</a> was designed as a sportier take on the more traditional SUV-shaped X5, the new X4 would inject a bit more Bavarian flavor into the plain ol' X3. Citing an unnamed source within the company, Autocar reports, "We haven't made any firm decision... however, the X6's success shows there is a continued demand for sporty off-roaders." 
 
Yes, we've <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/BMW+X4/">heard this rumor before</a>, but not since 2008. Why the possible change of heart? Despite drawing ire from what seems to be a vocal minority, BMW reports that the X6 is handily outpacing its own initial sales projections. In fact, it's 80,000 sales worldwide is twice what the automaker had expected to sell. And one good turn deserves... something.
