أعلن الباحثين بهيئة ماساشستس للتكنولوجيا (MIT) بأنه يمكننا خفض استهلاك الوقود من 30 الي 50% بحلول عام 2035 باستخدام سيارات صغيرة و خفيفة الوزن بمحركات هيبريد ذات كفاءة عالية و بالتوسع في استخدام انواع الوقود البديله

قد يتسبب ذلك في خفض استهلاك الوقود و لكن الخفض الأكير سيتم عندما يقتنع السائقون أنهم لا يحتاجون السيارات السريعه و الشاحنات الضخمه لقضاء حوائجهم اليوميه.

و تتلخص الخطوات المتوقعة في الآتي:

- خلال الـ 15 عام القادمة سيزيد مصنعي المحركات من كفاءة محركاتهم و أنظمة نقل الحركة مما سيكون له أثر كبير في خفض وزن السيارة و يجب ان تتركز مجهودات التطوير في خفض استهلاك الوقود و ليس في رفع الأداء

- في الفترة من 15 الي 30 سنة يستمر الباحثون في تطوير محركات الهيبريد و السيارات الكهربائيه و المحركات التي تستخدم الهيدروجين.

- العمل علي ايجاد وقود بديل للبترول (و هو غير متوقع في القريب العاجل)

- يجب ان تقوم الحكومات بحث المصنعين علي تطوير المحركات لخفض استهلاك الوقود و وضع اسس لذلك.

و في النهاية يجب نشر ثقافة عامة لخفض استهلاك الوقود بأن يقتنع السائقون بأنه لا يوجد ما سيتدعي استخدام سيارة ذات قدرة 300 حصان او بثلاث صفوف للمقاعد
