French automobile and motorcycle builder Lazareth has managed to shoehorn an entire BMW V12 engine into one of its crazy Wazuma quads. While there isn't much that's environmentally friendly about a 500-horsepower supercharged V12 from BMW that's powering a rather large and impractical quad platform, Lazareth has decided to attempt to give the machine a bit of eco-cred by running the engine on E85.

Why use ethanol in a decidedly performance-minded machine? We'd guess Lazareth's decision to run E85 as a fuel is due to its superior octane rating, which allows the engine to run a higher compression ratio than with gasoline. If you're interested in adding an ethanol-burning, V12-powered road rocket to your own personal stable of vehicles, all you need to do is write Lazareth a check for €200,000 ($283,000) and await your delivery. Click past the break for a video of the Wazuma Bio V12 in action.
eBay Find of the Day: BMW 3.0 CS/CSL Group 2 Racing Coupe

<sma ll>BMW 3.0 CS/CSL Group 2 Racing Coupe - click above image for gallery

So how'd you like to get your hands on this? First, a little explanation of what this is. You are looking at (and hopefully bidding on) a car that began life in 1968 as a 1969 BMW 2800 CS where it served for five-months as a BMW test car. It then spent close to 40-years kicking around various race circuits. Notable stops include 1977 when it was painted lime green and raced in Group 2 competition, after which someone painted our hero orange.

There it sat, all dressed up until the seller went to Sweden in 2006 and discovered the Bimmer in cold storage. He then performed a "rotisserie restoration" taking the car back to its original factory Alpine White. The seller even got this 3.0 CS together in time to race at the 2007 Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca. In fact, the car -- which is now fitted with a 3.5-liter six, Weber carbs, a CR5 Getrag and adjustable coilovers -- is still active and entered in the 2009 Coronado Speed Festival this September. Meaning that if you're the winning bidder, you get to go race! One teeny piece of bad news -- the opening bid of $75,000 didn't quite meet the reserve. Happy bidding!

BMW X6 Hybrid to be world's most powerful gas-electric vehicle

Filed under: Frankfurt Auto Show, Hybrid, Sedan, Crossover, BMW

<sma ll>BMW X6 ActiveHybrid Concept - Click above for a high-res image gallery

"High performance hybrid" - an oxymoron? Not according to BMW, which has two new hybrids coming to the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. One of the two, the X6 Hybrid, promises to be the most powerful hybrid vehicle ever offered with 478 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque from its twin electric motors and 4.4-liter V8 engine combined.

According to what appear to be leaked specs from BMW, the X6 Hybrid will scoot to 60 in about 5.5 seconds while returning a 20-percent fuel mileage improvement over the standard X6 with its twin-turbo V8. To set the hybrid apart from its standard sibling, BMW will bestow the new fuel-saver with a power dome hood (musclecar elements on a hybrid - HA!) and a bespoke metallic blue hue.

Faster yet will be the upcoming 7 Series Hybrid, which will reportedly be able to cover the run to 60 in under five seconds flat via the 459 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque provided by its V8-based hybrid powertrain combination. BMW predicts an X6 Hybrid-matching 20-percent increase in fuel efficiency from its 7 Series Hybrid.

2010 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 - click above for a high-res image gallery

The embargo dam began cracking earlier today with the premature release of the X6 ActiveHybrid's details, so BMW decided to open the floodgates and reveal all its Frankfurt-bound hybrids ahead of the show, beginning with the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid 7.

The big sedan uses a different electric drive setup from the coupe-shaped 'ute: a mild hybrid co-developed with Mercedes-Benz that combined with an electric motor and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, yields 455 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The V8 has been upgraded from the standard 400 to 440 hp (with the extra 15 hp coming from the electric motor), and unlike the two-mode hybrid system in the X6, this mild hybrid has the single motor sandwiched between the engine and the new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Another difference from the X6 is the use of a 120V lithium ion battery pack rather the nickel metal hydride unit in the crossover. The hybrid drive should bump the fuel efficiency by about 15 percent overall, putting it at about 19-20 mpg combined while getting to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds. The ActiveHybrid will be available in both standard and extra-long variants, and the production version of the ActiveHybrid 7 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, with sales beginning later this year. Full press release below the fold.

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid has arrived, and as previously covered, the new gas-electric X6 will be the most powerful hybrid in history, with 480 peak horsepower and diesel-like plateau of 575 lb-ft of torque.

That impressive powertrain consists of twin electric motors (delivering 91 hp and 86 hp, respectively) and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine. All those horses will be corralled through a seven-speed dual-mode transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The run to sixty will take just 5.4 seconds and the top speed will be limited to 130 miles per hour.

The EPA has yet to test the vehicle, but the German automaker is estimating its X6 Hybrid will return a 20-percent fuel mileage improvement average over the standard twin-turbo X6. That should mean about 18 miles per gallon combined in the States. The official public debut is scheduled for the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and the sale date is slated for four-quarter 2009. Click past the break for the comically-detailed press release and check out our image gallery below.
Veritas RS III priced at nearly half a million [w/VIDEO]
We don't know many people with half a million bucks lying around these days, but for those who've got the cash to burn, reports have surfaced on the official price of the Veritas RS III. And at €342,000 ($487,000 by today's rates), it ain't cheap.

For that much cash you get just one seat - with no roof, mind you, and not much of a windscreen to speak of - but what a seat it is. You're strapped into a retro rocket sled behind the BMW M division's 5-liter V10 with 500 horsepower on tap. A more powerful 620-horsepower version is also said to be available, which would presumably ratchet the price up even higher. Only 30 examples are to be made, and the sticker price also gives us a reference point for the upcoming fixed-roof version and reported aircraft-engined sport-ute that the company is said to be working on. Better start saving those pennies, fellas. Follow the jump for an inspirational, adrenaline-inducing video.
Lutz's resume includes reviving BMW with "Ultimate Driving Machine" tagline?

Bob Lutz. His name alone is enough spark heated discussions amongst us four-wheel loving types. But aside from being "Maximum" and getting GM to construct the Lutz 'Ring and using little more than personal chutzpah to push projects like GM's ill-fated Kappa platform through the General's special brand of extra-thick red tape, have you ever stopped and thought about the jet fightin', cigar chompin' uber car dude's credentials? If you guessed engineer or designer you would be wrong. Turns out that Lutz is little more than a (much) glorified marketer. Says Bob, "I had been practicing medicine without a license."

But he's a really good marketing guy. Lutz was instrumental in not only reviving the ailing BMW brand, but successfully introducing the Roundel to Americans in the 1970s. In fact, he saved the Roundel - BMW wanted to ditch the logo but Lutz said, "Nein." In 1971, BMW CEO Eberhard von Kuenheim lured a 39-year-old sales and marketing exec named Lutz away from Opel. See, after WW2, BMW had tried producing big luxury cars like the 503 and 504 (and the super fly 507), but soon learned that no one in Europe had any money. Then it turned to bubbly Isettas that were neat but hardly mass market stuff. Lutz's job was not only to revive the moribund brand, but get some traction in the plum U.S. market with good products like the 700, the 2002 and the guibo-laden Bavaria.

Since BMW was the underdog, Lutz went with an underdog ad agency called Ammirati & Puris after being impressed by their Fiat ads. Ammirati & Puris came up with the tag line, "The Ultimate Driving Machine," and Lutz had the good sense to green light the campaign. In the early 1970s, Baby Boomers were out of college, making money and ready to start spending that money, especially on premium products. And it's hard to argue with a tag line like "Ultimate Driving Machine," especially for people whose fathers owned sloppy Buicks for the last two decades. Lutz's gamble paid off, as no yuppy worth their salt in the 1980s drove anything less than a 320i. Now, the question becomes: does Lutz have enough left in the tank at 77-years-old to pull a similar stunt for General Motors as the recently bankrupt automaker's chief marketer? We shall wait and we shall see.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub.
