REPORT: BMW dropping a cylinder for next-gen 1- and 3-Series

Of the five powerplants reportedly in development, three are 1.35-liter three-cylinder motors developing between 163 hp and 241 hp, with the two 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engines putting out 273 hp and 321 hp, respectively. Sky Motoring says that the four-pots will be reserved for "more upmarket models."<br /><br />While a 3-Series with a 3-cylinder engine has a certain poetry, it does give one pause. If Sky Motoring's numbers are correct, however, the top end 1.35-liter motor would put out 11 more horsepower than the current 3.0-liter in the 328i. That's a lot of power for such little displacement, and with brand perception issues in the U.S., who knows if we would even get the engines - after all, we don't get any of Mercedes' CGI mills. From where we sit, though, the smaller, lighter engine with its commensurately fewer moving parts could also help bring the sticker price of the 1-Series down - one of the major factors that has prevented it from gaining traction in stateside showrooms.<br /><br />In any case, the new BMW engines are said to be at least two years away, so we look forward to getting more clarifying information in the meantime. <em>Hat tip to Owen</em>!<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://motoring.sky.com/news/next-bmw-1--3series-get-3cylinder-engines.aspx">Sky Motoring</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/11/report-bmw-dropping-a-cylinder-for-next-gen-1-and-3-series/">REPORT: BMW dropping a cylinder for next-gen 1- and 3-Series</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Mon, 11 May 2009 10:29:00 EST. The last time we were in this situation -- hoping a car's production version would be a huge improvement over it's pre-production form -- was with the Porsche Panamera, and we know how that ended. While we're certain that this Progressive Activity Sedan has <em>some</em> purpose, we wonder where are all these potential buyers demanding a little more cargo room than a 5 sedan, a little less than a wagon, and one less seat. REPORT: 2010 BMW X3 coming in November
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/crossovers-cuvs/" rel="tag">Crossovers/CUVs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/05/20/latest-news-next-generation-bmw-x3-will-be-unveiled-in-december/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_x3_2010.jpg" /></a><br /><br />When the X3 launched in 2004 there was no Mercedes GLK or Audi Q5. Now that the other Germans have come with the competition, reports are indicate BMW is moving the launch of the 2010 X3 up to make sure it can compete. <br /><br />The next X3 will be about four inches longer, a half-inch narrower, and a fraction of an inch taller. The extra length will help improve interior room, but the Sport Activity Vehicle is said to be tuned for increased sporting performance. The features list will include hand-me-downs from the 7 Series such as Night Vision and Heads Up Display, and -- in Europe at least -- six engines will be offered: two gasoline and four diesel. We in the U.S. will probably still make do with the either the naturally aspirated or turbocharged 3.0-liter gas engines and possibly a turbo'd four.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/05/20/latest-news-next-generation-bmw-x3-will-be-unveiled-in-december/">BMW Blog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/20/report-2010-bmw-x3-coming-in-november/">REPORT: 2010 BMW X3 coming in November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 14:28:00 EST. First Ride: BMW F 800 GS takes on the RawHyde Adventure Rider Challenge
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/driving/" rel="tag">First Drive</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/motorcycles/" rel="tag">Motorcycles</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/2040078/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_f800000_opt.jpg" /></a><br />
<div align="center"><em><stron g><small>BMW F 800 GS - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div> <br />Since its introduction back in 2004, the R 1200 GS has been BMW's best selling motorcycle, and for good reason. Time and again, the big bike has proven itself surprisingly capable of traversing the gnarliest of terrain in the hands of riders all around the world. The German motorcycle maker invented the adventure touring category when it introduced the R 80 G/S way back in 1980, and since then, almost all of BMW's GS series of bikes have featured the brand's signature twin-cylinder horizontally-opposed boxer engine. <br /><br />Lately, though, a new contender from BMW's own paddocks has entered the fray using the brand's more recent 800cc parallel-twin engine design, and we wanted to see how it compared to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/10/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-bmw-r-1200-gs/">R 1200 GS that we reviewed back in February</a>. To that end, we jumped at the chance to ride the new F 800 GS at the <a href="http://www.adventureriderchallen ge.com/">RawHyde Adventures Rider Challenge </a>in Castaic, California. Throughout the event, we also had access to the 1200, allowing us to ride the two adventure bikes back-to-back over similar terrain. Wanna know how they compare? Read on.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/">Review: BMW F 800 GS</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/2040078/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_f800000_thumbnail.jpg " alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/2040077/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_f800001_thumbnail.jpg " alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/2040062/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_f800002_thumbnail.jpg " alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/2040060/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_f800003_thumbnail.jpg " alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-bmw-f-800-gs/2040058/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/bmw_f800004_thumbnail.jpg " alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photo s Copyright (C)2009 Jeremy Korzeniewski / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/28/first-drive-bmw-f-800-gs-takes-on-the-rawhyde-adventure-rider-challe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Ride: BMW F 800 GS takes on the RawHyde Adventure Rider Challenge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/28/first-drive-bmw-f-800-gs-takes-on-the-rawhyde-adventure-rider-challe/">First Ride: BMW F 800 GS takes on the RawHyde Adventure Rider Challenge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 11:58:00 EST. REPORT: Next BMW M5 to feature twin-turbo V10 with 600 hp
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/" rel="tag">Sedans/Saloons</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227831/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/07_garage_2008_m5-580op.jpg" alt="" /></a><br />
<div align="center"><em><stron g><small>BMW M5 - Click above for a high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div> <br />The next BMW M5 is due to arrive sometime in 2011 or 2012 and as the release date draws near, more details about BMW's newest 'Bahn-burner have begun to surface.<br /><br />Two reports indicate that BMW may continue to use a V10 powerplant in the next M5, although there's still some evidence that the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 currently fitted to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/04/new-york-preview-bmw-x6-and-x5-get-the/">X5M and X6M</a> could be tweaked and fitted in its place. However, if BMW decides to stick with the bent-ten, a thoroughly revised version based off the 'utes' V8 would be employed, packing a duo of turbos to boost output up and over the 600 hp mark, and giving the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/AudiRS6/">Audi RS6</a> a run for its money.<br /><br />But it won't be all about power. BMW is also expected to use an F1-style <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/KERS/">KERS</a> system to increase performance and fuel economy, along with an engine start-stop setup and an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. If the rumors are to be believed, expect the next M5 to make its debut sometime in 2011, with sales beginning in early 2012.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/">In the Autoblog Garage: 2008 BMW M5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227827/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/01_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227829/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/02_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227830/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/03_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227833/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/04_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-bmw-m5-1/1227834/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/05_garage_2008_m5_thumbna il.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Sources: <a href="http://www.bmwblog.com/2009/06/20/new-information-on-the-next-f10-bmw-m5/">BMWBlog</a>, <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/237406/bmws_twinturbo_m5.html">A utoExpress</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/25/report-next-bmw-m5-to-feature-twin-turbo-v10-with-600-hp/">REPORT: Next BMW M5 to feature twin-turbo V10 with 600 hp</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 15:31:00 EST.
