Why analysts are wary of Toyota's fortunes

The investment group says the automaker isn't recovering from the automotive implosion as quickly as its competitors. As a result, the predictions regarding the company's return to pre-sales-collapse figures have been toned down. Goldman Sachs Japan now says that while it fully expects to see car sales eclipse the previous average growth rate of 2.6 percent per year, jumping to eight and nine percent from 2010 on, Toyota is only expected to see its pace swell by three percent. <br />

Why so slow? According to GSJ, the problem is that Toyota sales have grown soft in Europe, the U.S. and even Japan. While the company is still at the top of the sales charts on its home turf, it's also facing operating losses that are expected to continue on into the near future. Meanwhile, sales in Europe have fallen off from 1.284 million units in 2008 to 858,000 in 2010. Likewise, in the U.S., sales are down by 30 percent in 2010 compared to just two years ago. Never heard of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/toyota">Toyota</a> Vitz? It's one of the auto giant's biggest sellers in the Japanese Domestic Market, accounting for over 1.4 million units since its introductory model in 1999. But the compact hatchback isn't exclusive to Japan: in export markets, it's known to us as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/yaris">Yaris</a>, and Toyota's sold more than 3.5 million of them around the world. And now it has introduced the third generation.<br />

Abandoning the cartoonish styling of its predecessor, the new Vitz/Yaris is considerably sharper in the design department. It's also more fuel efficient and less polluting to the environment. And while overall dimensions remain compact, the interior has grown in capacity for added comfort and utility, utilizing a new type of glass to filter out 99 percent of UV radiation.<br />

The Vitz is offered domestically with a range of engines and trim levels - from 1.0- to 1.5-liter engines, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with CVTs, manu-matics and stick shifts, a start-stop system and even upscale Jewela and RS trims - though the North American Yaris will undoubtedly constrict the choices some. Subaru WRX STI Spec C launched in Japan

Lighter, more responsive engine performance and increased stiffness - three descriptors that provide the basis of information regarding the all-new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/wrx+sti">Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec C</a>. We supposed we could also throw in the longer name, but you can already see that. Japan's production of small cars down 30.3% for November

November's automobile production, not to be confused with total sales, has dropped by 6.7 percent in Japan as compared to a year ago. According to data published by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, November 2010 automobile production hit 802,009 total units. However, the overall drop fails to tell the whole story. <br />
<br />
Japan's production of standard cars - vehicles with an engine that displaces two liters or more - shot up 3.7 percent year-on-year in November. Likewise, truck production rose by 3.3 percent to 101,853 units and bus output increased by 11.7 percent, hitting 10,348 units. So, larger vehicle's fared well, but how about the small autos? <br />

Overall, passenger car production dropped off by 8.2 percent, falling to 689,808 units. Output of small cars - vehicles with an engine that displaces between 660 cc and 2.0 liters, just outside the tiny Kei car class - declined by 30.3 percent and mini cars (under 660 cc) were down 4.2 percent. Though production numbers have no direct connection to sales, the reported figures seem to suggest that Japan's enthusiasm for smaller autos, which are likely to be more fuel efficient than larger vehicles, is waning. <br />
