What's German for "bargain?" BMW S 1000 RR superbike to be priced close to Japanese competition
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/motorcycles/" rel="tag">Motorcycles</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/1500082/"><img hspace="4" border="1" vspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009_bmw_s1000rr_580.jpg" alt="" /></a><br />
<div align="center"><em><stron g><small>BMW S 1000 RR - Click above for a high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div> <br />The street-going version of BMW's upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/11/bmw-reveals-race-ready-s-1000-rr/">S 1000 RR</a> is scheduled to debut at the World Superbike race on May 29th at Miller Motorsports Park. That's exciting news in and of itself, but we're especially intrigued after hearing that the German manufacturer plans to price the premium machine within spitting distance of its Japanese rivals.<br /><br />"We intend to take the four Japanese head-on. We did not intend to build a motorcycle like Ducati does or KTM does. We wanted to build a mainstream motorcycle," says Pieter de Waal, Vice President of BMW Motorrad USA. That would put the price of the BMW well under that of other European superbikes like the Ducati 1198 or KTM RC8.<br /><br />The figure we've been hearing is that the S 1000 RR will be priced within 10% of the Japanese liter bikes, which would put the German machine at around $15,000, but we're not likely to know for certain for at least the next few weeks. Still, consider our interest piqued.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/">BMW S 1000 RR streetbike</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/1500082/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009-bmw-s1000rr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/1500083/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009-bmw-s1000rr-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-streetbike/1500084/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/2009-bmw-s1000rr-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/">BMW S 1000 RR race livery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/1091067/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_2_thu mbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/1091068/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_3_thu mbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/1091064/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_5_thu mbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/1091063/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_1_thu mbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-s-1000-rr-race-livery/1091066/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/bmw_s_1000_rr_large_4_thu mbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.dealernews.com/dealernews/Breaking+News/BMW-Relying-on-US-for-Future-Growth/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/593391?contextCategoryId= 2704">Dealernews</a> via <a href="http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/news/bmw-s1000rr-priced-japanese-superbikes-cheaper-ducati-ktm/">Asphalt and Rubber</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/19/whats-german-for-bargain-bmw-s-1000-rr-superbike-to-be-price/">What's German for "bargain?" Review: 2009 BMW 750i

<div align="center"><em><stron g><small>2009 BMW 750i - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div> <br />The BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-class are two vehicles utterly defined by their birthplace. Each was spawned in Southern Germany, where massive stretches of autobahn honed their ability to cover boundless distances at high velocities, cosseting occupants in Teutonic luxury. But they're decidedly different beasts. In spite of their similarities, the two brands have always had distinct personalities. BMW followed its tag-line of the "Ultimate Driving Machine," while Mercedes stuck to its more sober image, focusing on its "Best in German engineering" meme. <br /><br />As so often happens, automakers feel compelled to grow and expand beyond traditional audiences, and at times, the result is a diluted product that strays from its roots. When everyone is attempting to cater to the broadest possible audience, overlap is inevitable and distinctions begin to disappear. Look no further than the American mid-size sedan segment, or in this case, the last generation 7-series. So for 2009, BMW sought to re-focus its uber-sedan on what it does best. Read on to find out if BMW succeeded or if the new 7 suffers from further dilution.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-750i/">Review: 2009 BMW 750i</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-750i/1513662/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/000_7series_review_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-750i/1513647/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/001_7series_review_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-750i/1513645/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/002_7series_review_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-750i/1513644/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/003_7series_review_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/review-2009-bmw-750i/1513643/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/004_7series_review_thumbn ail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photo s Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/23/review-2009-bmw-750i/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Review: 2009 BMW 750i</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/23/review-2009-bmw-750i/">Review: 2009 BMW 750i</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 11:58:00 EST. Official pricing for BMW X5M and X6M leaks out
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/crossovers-cuvs/" rel="tag">Crossovers/CUVs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><img hspace="4" border="1" vspace="4" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/p90045839_image-1280_opt.jpg" /><br /><br />The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/04/new-york-preview-bmw-x6-and-x5-get-the/">BMW X5M and X6M</a> are all about excess. Excess power (if that's possible), excess girth, and, as we already knew, excess cost. <em>BimmerFile</em> is reporting that the X5M will ding your budget to the tune of $85,400, while the X6M will set you back $88,900. And anyone that has ever priced out a Bimmer with options knows that those prodigious figures are only the baseline of what will no doubt be two even more expensive BMWs. <br /><br />But for nearly $90,000, you get what, for now, are the two most powerful BMWs on the road. Both models will reap the benefits of a 555 hp, 500 lb-ft twin turbo 4.4L V8. That's 55 hp and 105 lb-ft more than the M5 or M6; two vehicles that cost more than their crossover counterparts. The M treatment will also add more aggressive aesthetics, torque-vectoring AWD, and massive 15.6 inch front rotors to help these flying bricks stop on a dime (or 900,000 dimes, really). Does that make the X5M and X6M a compelling value? If you're in the market for a 550 hp crossover, we guess so, because outside of the substantially more expensive Porsche Cayenne Turbo S ($124,000) these new Bimmers are the only other family-haulers with that kind of muscle.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/">BMW X6 M</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/1470418/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/000_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/1470427/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/001_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/1470438/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/002_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/1470410/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/003_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x6-m-and-x5-m/1470419/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/004_bmwx6mx5m_thumbnail.j pg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-m-1/">BMW X5 M</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-m-1/1471927/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/x5-m--23-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-m-1/1471938/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/x5-m--08-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-m-1/1471948/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/x5-m--13-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-m-1/1471942/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/x5-m--18-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bmw-x5-m-1/1471940/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/x5-m--22-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2009/04/23/bmwna-x5m-x6m-pricing/">BimmerFile</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/26/official-pricing-for-bmw-x5m-and-x6m-leaks-out/">Official pricing for BMW X5M and X6M leaks out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Sun, 26 Apr 2009 17:06:00 EST. BMW and Mercedes-Benz considering four-cylinders in US, pending new fuel economy standards
<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/mercedes-benz/" rel="tag">Mercedes-Benz</a></p><a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090427/ANA03/304279983/1197"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/bmw1coupe_official_hi006-580op.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><br />With new CAFE regulations looming on the horizon, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are considering bringing four-cylinder models back to the States. BMW's development of new four-pots have been widely reported over the last year, with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/12/confirmed-bmw-working-on-4-cylinder-turbo-may-come-to-u-s/">automaker confirming</a> work on a direct injected, twin-turbocharged four, likely to be fitted on the next generation 1 and 3 series, due to arrive in 2012. The new mill is also slated to be equipped on the X1 and X3, and according to the automaker, the powerplants will deliver the same output as the current in-line sixes, but with better fuel economy and lower emissions. However, the development of an all-new engine is expensive, and BMW will pass along the cost to consumers, despite BMW's claim that buyers aren't willing to pay for advanced technology.<br /><br />As for Mercedes-Benz, aside from the 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel that debuted on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/08/new-york-mercedes-e250-bluetec-concept-would-get-39-mpg-highway/">E250 Bluetech concept</a>, little is known about the automaker's plans for four-bangers in the States. Although the concept, unveiled at the New York Auto Show, was equipped to an E-Class, don't expect a gasoline-powered four to be fitted on a future E - the new engine will likely find a home in the C-Class and GLK CUV sometime in the next few years.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090427/ANA03/304279983/1197">Automotive News</a> - Sub. Styled by the the automaker's design firm, the BMW DesignworksUSA Bavaria Cruiser 55 became the largest vessel in Bavaria's fleet when it launched this past weekend at the Palma Boat Show in Majorca, Spain. <br /><br />Even in the rapidly reproaching disciplines of automotive design and naval architecture - recent examples of whose collaboration have included <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/21/porsche-gets-its-feet-wet-with-viper-power/">Viper-powered, Porsche-designed speedboats</a> and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/27/lounge-on-deck-of-vw-caddy-topos-sail-concept/">nautical Volkswagen Caddy</a> - this isn't the first time the BMW design studio has dipped its toes in the water, having designed the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/26/bmw-designworksusa-pens-bavaria-deep-blue-46-motoryacht/">Deep Blue 46 motoryacht</a> for the same firm and the even larger <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/13/zeydon-builds-the-bmw-of-yachts/">60-foot sailing vessel for Belgian shipyard Zeydon</a>. This latest design benefits from lessons learned in automotive design, while incorporating some of the latest features in naval architecture. Built atop BMW's next-generation 1 Series architecture, which will reportedly be configured to allow for front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, the Z2 is likely to feature all of the German automaker's latest fuel-saving Efficient Dynamics tweaks, including a possible plug-in hybrid powertrain.<br /><br />Joining the eco-friendly model will be both gas and diesel engines with 2.0-liters or less displacement. Perhaps most interesting is a rumor that the Z2 may get a sequential transmission borrowed from BMW's line of high-end motorcycles. Weight will be kept low thanks to heavy use of composite materials, and adjustable aerodynamics should offer high downforce when tackling the bends and minimal drag when motoring on the expressway.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bimmerfile.com/2009/04/24/the-future-of-bmw-z2/#comments">BimmerFile</a>]<p style="padding:5px;backgr ound:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/28/rumormill-bmw-z2-concept-to-debut-in-frankfurt-featuring-fuel-s/">Rumormill: BMW Z2 concept to debut in Frankfurt featuring fuel-saving technology</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblo g</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 10:01:00 EST.
