Chicago 2010: Ford Transit Connect Electric uses the "Force"

<a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2010/02/09/chicago-preview-ford-transit-connect-electric-and-cng-powered-t/">As expected</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> brought the latest (and greatest?) incarnations of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/transit+connect">Transit Connect</a> utility van to the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/Chicago-Auto-Show/">Chicago Auto Show</a> today. The battery-powered Transit Connect Electric was up first, perhaps because it fits so well into Ford's strategy of vehicle electrification (see also: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/10/20/ford-prepping-for-20-home-trials-of-the-focus-bev-in-london/">Focus Electric</a> coming next year, followed by a plug-in hybrid and a next-gen hybrid in 2012). At the very least, this is Ford's first battery-powered vehicle, said product development vice president Derrick Kuzak. 
 
The practical and battery-powered delivery van (the standard version was <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/11/detroit-2010-ford-sweeps-north-american-car-and-truck-of-the-ye/">named the North American Truck of the Year</a> this year) uses a powertrain developed with help from Azure Dynamics Corporation. Called Force Drive, the 55 kW system uses a 28 kWh lithium ion battery pack from Johnson Controls-Saft, has a 75 mile per hour top speed and can drive up to 80 miles on a charge. Will these specs be enough for customers? Praveen Cherian, program manager for the Transit Connect Electric, said in a statement that:

Chicago 2010: Ford Transit Connect Taxi burns CNG, LPG and four acres of space

Hot on the (w)heels of the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2010/02/10/chicago-2010-ford-transit-electric/">Ford Transit Electric</a>, the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2010/02/09/chicago-preview-ford-transit-connect-electric-and-cng-powered-t/">Transit Connect Taxi</a> drove onto the stage at the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/Chicago-Auto-Show-/">Chicago Auto Show</a> today running on compressed natural gas (CNG). The clean-burning utility van - based on the gasoline-powered North American Truck of the Year winner - adds to Ford's taxi fleet options like the Crown Victoria (see: pretty much any taxi in any city in the U.S.) and the <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2007/04/03/ford-escape-hybrid-taxis-top-175-000-miles/">Ford Escape Hybrid</a>. The new taxi van can also burn propane (LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas). Of course, regular Transit Connect buyers can also opt for Ford's engine prep package to be able to put the gasoline alternatives into the tank. Like its battery-powered cousin, the Transit Connect Taxi will be in dealerships later this year. 
 
Ford product development vice president Derrick Kuzak said that there is "strong demand" for CNG and LPG vehicles among fleet operators. Kuzak also highlighted the small size of the Transit Connect in an odd way: if all of the taxis in Chicago were replaced with these vans, he said, it would free up approximately four acres. Um, OK. Now, what should we do with these extra acres?

Chicago 2010: 2011 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty ups the ante

Identified by its new power dome hood, a styling throwback, the 2011 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/silverado">Silverado</a> HD arrived at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/chicago-auto-show/">Chicago Auto Show</a> riding on an all-new ladder frame, suspension, and axles - about the only carry-over part is the front stabilizer bar link that connects the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm. Maximum towing capacity is up to 20,000 pounds with the DRW Duramax diesel and fifth wheel combo (yes, that trumps the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/super+duty">Ford F-Series Super Duty</a>). The gasoline-fed SRW 6.0-liter V-8 engine will pull 14,500 pounds with a fifth wheel. 
 
In addition to the beefy hood, the front bumper has been revised with a larger emblem and a more gaping intake - designed to improve transmission cooling. Other improvements include 17-inch wheels (standard) or optional new 18- or 20-inch alloys. The dual rear-wheel tires are still 17-inch, but they now accommodate taller aspect ratio tires. The improvements for 2011 are all good news for heavy duty truck buyers with the exception of the wheel bolt pattern - the eight-lug hub has a slightly different measurement meaning 2007-10 wheels simply won't fit. Its a big name for a big truck... deservedly celebrating its impressive lineage. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> rolled out the 2010 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/suburban">Suburban</a> 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition model at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/chicago-auto-show/">Chicago Auto Show</a> specially commemorating 75 years of family hauling (making it the longest running nameplate in the industry). The decked-out SUV, limited to just 2,570 units (apparently, GM is limited by the amount of White Diamond paint it can procure), is identified by its White Diamond Tricoat exterior paint and Cashmere interior. 
 
In addition to standard 20-inch chrome-clad wheels and revised roof rails, the eight-passenger Suburban comes with standard LTZ package content - integrated navigation radio, XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity, rearview camera, rear park assist, remote starting and adjustable pedals. Leather upholstery with heated/cooled front seats is also standard. Ensuring fellow soccer moms will notice your commemorative gesture, the Diamond Edition also arrives with a slew of obligatory badging on the C-pillar and interior. Press release after the jump.

Chicago 2010: Internet Car and Truck of the Year awards handed out, Neff FTW

For the first time, the Internet Car and Truck of the year organization presented <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/mazda">Mazda</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> with a number of well-earned awards at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/chicago-auto-show/">Chicago Auto Show</a>. Mazda won with its freshly updated <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/mazda3">2010 Mazda3</a> in the car category, beating out such worthy candidates as the <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/fusion">Ford Fusion Hybrid</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/shelby+gt500">Shelby GT500</a>. 
 
However, the big winner was Chevrolet, with the <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/equinox">Equinox</a> taking home prizes for two separate categories - Internet Truck of the Year and Consumer Internet Truck of the Year - while the <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/camaro">Camaro</a> snagged the Consumer Internet Car of the Year. Our particular favorite award, though, was for the Internet Automotive Journalist of the Year. 
 
Why? Well, it was won by none other than our very own and highly esteemed Editor-in-Chief, John Neff. For those keeping track, Neff has won the award every single year that it's been presented. Nicely done, John.
