BMW tightens up the M6 with new Competition Package

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/coupes/" rel="tag">Coupes</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sports/" rel="tag">Sports/GTs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><p><a href="http://www.motorauthority.com/news/coupes/bmw-introduces-competition-package-for-m6-coupe/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0018060_450op.jpg" alt="" /><br /></a></p>
<p>The BMW 6-Series is a lot of car, and while the 5.0-liter V10 in the M6 does a remarkable job of moving it around, critics have said it could use some help. Reports now indicate that the M division is giving it some help in the form of a new Competition Package.</p>
<p>The pseudo-CSL gets a new active suspension and a ride height lowered by 12mm up front and 10mm in the back, along with new wheels and a new front hood to set it apart from the standard model. With or without the Competition Package, however, the entire M6 range (coupe and convertible) gets new side mirrors, a new electronics package controlled by the revised iDrive system and a new shade of black for the exterior. While we're not sure the new option pack would prompt us to take the M6 Competition Package racing as its name suggests, it does make the big sports-coupe that much more tempting. </p>

BMW updates M models for 2009

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/carbuying/" rel="tag">Car Buying</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/convertibles/" rel="tag">Convertibles</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/coupes/" rel="tag">Coupes</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sedans/" rel="tag">Sedans/Saloons</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/sports/" rel="tag">Sports/GTs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-bmw-m-model-changes/953037/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0047302_opt.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Click above for high-res gallery of 2009 MY changes</span><br /><br />BMW's lineup of M-fortified vehicles now numbers nine, which is the largest it's ever been in the sub-brand's 30-year history. Munich has tweaked the lineup for 2009, and while nothing groundbreaking has been added, the additions and changes are worth noting. For instance, the BMW M3 Sedan gets a new rear end that sports updated taillights with two LED light clusters, and the entire M3 line gets some minor interior tweaks, new colors and crash-active headrests. The M5 and M6 soldier on with larger sideview mirrors, though BMW mentions that regenerative braking and an uncoupling air conditioner compressor - both fuel saving technologies - are right around the corner. <br /><br />Of course, all M models are now offered with the latest generation of the automaker's much maligned iDrive control system. We haven't had the opportunity to sample the new version yet, so we'll refrain from making fun of its user interface for now. A new, impressively large 8.8-inch nav screen is, however, available with the optional Professional navigation system package and each system has moved from being DVD-based to storing all the info on an in-dash 80GB hard drive. This fall, BMW will also be offering <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/05/bmws-in-car-internet-coming-to-u-s-later-this-year/">ConnectedDrive</a>, the first application of unrestricted internet access in a car, across the M lineup and iPhone integration has now been worked out, as well. <br /><br />Perhaps the most significant addition is the arrival of a Competition Package for the M6 Coupe. The Competition Package includes a newly tuned performance suspension that lowers the car 12 mm up front and 10 mm in the rear, an adaptable suspension control system and double-spoke forged alloy wheels. BMW claims this will be the most athletic M6 you can buy and that there will be visual distinctions to set it apart from a standard M6. Unfortunately, BMW refrained from showing us what those visual distinctions will be. You can view what they did show us, however, in the gallery below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><s trong>Gallery: <a href="%GalleryURL%">2009 BMW M model changes</a></strong></p><a href="/gallery/2009-bmw-m-model-changes/953023/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0047258_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2009-bmw-m-model-changes/953035/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0047259_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2009-bmw-m-model-changes/953025/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0047260_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2009-bmw-m-model-changes/953029/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0047261_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="/gallery/2009-bmw-m-model-changes/953028/"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/p0047262_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BMW]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/bmw-updates-m-models-for-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BMW updates M models for 2009</em></a></p><p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/bmw-updates-m-models-for-2009/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1271851/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/bmw-updates-m-models-for-2009/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

Leases hurting luxury automakers, BMW wants you to buy

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/carbuying/" rel="tag">Car Buying</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a97 fiq1RYJME&refer=home"><im g vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/2545935165_68a546dec8_b_o pt.jpg" /></a>The Detroit 3 aren't the only automakers feeling the hurt from lease vehicles coming back worth much less than expected. Leases account for 60% of BMW's sales in the U.S. compared to just 20% of sales in the industry as a whole. As such, BMW will begin offering incentives like never before to encourage customers to buy a vehicle instead and reduce the number of leases it has on the books. In some cases the German brand is offering loans with finance rates as low as 0.9% over five years, and of course these incentives will be aided by a commensurate raise in lease prices, as well. <br /><br />Nearly all luxury makers are in the same boat as BMW, as Bloomberg reports that leases also comprise 55% of sales at Mercedes-Benz, 43% at Lexus and 42% at Cadillac. While the residual value of luxury vehicles isn't falling quite as fast as SUVs and full-size trucks, the market's shift in preference to smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles means that there is less demand for vehicles that tend to conspicuously consume copious amounts of fuel. <em>Thanks for the tip, Rich!</em><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a97 fiq1RYJME&refer=home">Blo omberg</a>]<p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px; font-size: 1px; border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0;">&nbsp;</p><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/01/leases-hurting-luxury-automakers-bmw-wants-you-to-buy/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent link to this entry">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/forward/1273109/" title="Send this entry to a friend via email">Email this</a> | <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/01/leases-hurting-luxury-automakers-bmw-wants-you-to-buy/#comments" title="View reader comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><hr />

Rendering pays homage to BMW M1 and Dodge Challenger

<p>Combining a Dodge with a BMW doesn't sound like a good idea. But then again, sound and sight are two different things. So just when we thought we'd seen it all, we're thrown for a surprise.</p>
<p>A Russian illustrator by the name of Remio, evidently quite skilled with the Photoshop and CAD, has managed to blend the new Dodge Challenger with the BMW M1 Homage show car, and the results are rather surprising. While some rendered speculation can prove to be quite close to the mark when the subject goes into production, we'll have to file this one squarely in the "never gonna happen" folder. Shame.</p>

BMW prices will continue to rise through 2009

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/plants-manufacturing/" rel="tag">Plants/Manufacturing</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><img hspace="4" vspace="4" border="0" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/bmw-logo.jpg" />If you're in the market for a Bimmer, now is the time to buy. BMW is raising prices this year and next to help ease the burden of unfavorable exchange rates between European currencies and the weak U.S. dollar. CEO Norbert Reithofer told reporters that the company would also produce 20,000 to 25,000 fewer vehicles overall in 2009 and sell 40,000 fewer units in the U.S. Disastrous exchange rates aren't team Bimmer's only problem, either. The German automaker<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/01/leases-hurting-luxury-automakers-bmw-wants-you-to-buy/"> leases 60%</a> of its vehicles in the U.S. during a time when sinking residuals are losing automakers billions. <br /><br />A quick look at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/01/by-the-numbers-july-2008/">July sales figures</a> shows that even the best-run automakers are hurting. BMW cancels plan for range-topping X7 SUV

<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/suvs/" rel="tag">SUVs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/crossovers-cuvs/" rel="tag">Crossovers/CUVs</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/bmw/" rel="tag">BMW</a></p><p><a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080804/ANE02/763463957"><img border="0" align="right" src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/bmw-logo.jpg" alt="" /></a>BMW's chief executive officer Norbert Reithofer has revealed that the company has axed plans to build a larger sport-ute to top the range currently inhabited by the X3, X5 and X6 crossovers. Reithofer cited economic problems in the United States and Europe as the main reason for the cancellation of the program, i.e. sales of SUVs are dropping like a rock.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, other reports suggest that the green light in Munich has been given instead to a smaller crossover to be based on the 1-Series platform, which would enable BMW to expand its X range with an X1 instead of an X7. Smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient is probably a smarter direction to head in these times than bigger, heavier and greater guzzler.<br /></p>
