Cadillac Drops 2.8-Liter Turbo V-6 in SRX
Critical acclaim doesn’t always translate into a high amount of sales when the rubber meets the road. The previous-generation Cadillac SRX wasn’t a hot seller despite being much-lauded in the automotive press. The new model ditched the previous SRX’s Sigma rear-wheel drive platform for front-wheel drive Theta underpinnings
With a bold new look, the move has paid off brilliantly for Cadillac, as the SRX has sold well in the face of a tepid critical reception. In fact, General Motors states that the SRX has a larger share of the luxury crossover market than the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Funny how that works
After only one year on the market news has come out that the engine has been axed, leaving only the direct injected, naturally-aspirated 3.0-liter V-6. The engine makes 265 horsepower and 223 pound feet of torque. No doubt the 2.8-liter got much better reviews than the 3.0-liter. However, pricing for the engine was near the $50,000 mark, and many buyers opted for the cheaper model. In fact, only 10% of SRX buyers opted for the engine. The 2.8-liter will continue to do duty in the Saab 9-4X, a platform mate to the SRX
GMInsideNews broke the story about the engine’s demise, and Cadillac spokeswoman Robyn Henderson has confirmed the option deletion. The question now is if GM will add a new top-level engine in the future to slot above the 3.0-liter
