Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel Option Likely

European technology transplants are about to improve Jeep's health. Italy and Germany will provide efficiency-enhancing transmission upgrades for large and small models in the SUV specialist's lineup, and an excellent new turbodiesel V-6 from Italy is likely to be offered in the Grand Cherokee for the American market.
"There's a better than 50 percent chance that the diesel will make it to the USA," said Sergio Marchionne, referring to the Grand Cherokee. The CEO of Fiat-Chrysler was responding to questions earlier this week at an event in northern Italy to familiarize European media with the Jeep product range.

Jeep executives present at the event at the Balocco proving ground outside Turin confirmed that the introduction of an eight-speed auto for the Grand Cherokee is imminent, as we have reported for some time now. It will be manufactured by ZF, the German transmission, steerin, and suspension component maker. Brands like BMW and Jaguar are among ZF's existing customer list for the eight-speed auto.
The diesel mentioned by Marchionne was introduced February in Europe. The 3.0-liter V-6 was designed by diesel specialists VM Motori. Fiat acquired 50 percent ownership of the company earlier this year, buying the portion owned by Penske. The other half of VM is owned by General Motors.
Equipped with the latest MultiJet II version of Fiat Powertrain's high-pressure common-rail injection system, the V-6 is both refined and powerful. With its quiet, smooth idle and broad torque spread, the engine is right at home in the classy new Grand Cherokee. Even teamed with the five-speed auto that may soon be obsolete, performance is excellent.
